It was founded towards the end of 1066. The castle was used as a prison from 1100 until 1952, although that was not its primary purpose. Early in its history, it served as a royal residence.
In the First and Second World Wars, the Tower was again used as a prison and witnessed the executions of 12 men for espionage.
After the Second World War, damage caused during the Blitz was repaired, and the castle reopened to the public. Today, the Tower of London is one of the country's most popular tourist attractions.
The tradition of housing the Crown Jewels in the Tower of London probably dates from the reign of Henry III (1216-1272). The Jewel House was built specifically to house the royal regalia, including jewels, plate, and symbols of royalty such as the crown, sceptre, and sword. Among the items you'll see is the Imperial State Crown - which is still worn by the queen for each State Opening of Parliament - and the Sovereign's Sceptre with Cross. The display includes 23,578 gemstones, the 800-year-old Coronation Spoon, St. Edward's Crown (worn during all crownings at Westminster Abbey) and the Imperial State Crown.
The property is cared for by the charity Historic Royal Palaces and is protected as a World Heritage Site.
