Still spending like crazy with cc while bringing in over 100k???
The older I get the less junk I want.
Everyone is different.
Houses and RVs both reliably provide unexpected expenses.
This is insane how much money people can make and just consume all of it
Its called nose candy

I can’t imagine retiring while still owing $400k on my house. Crazy
A Retirement check helps.
I thought retirement could be used as an excuse to not pay a mortgage and then I found out that was false.
@@wewhoareabouttodiesaluteyo9303
? Why is it false?
@@aolvaar8792 I think foreclosure is just as much of a threat when one is a senior as if they were middle aged.
@@aolvaar8792how could it not be? Everyone would buy multi-million dollar homes at age 64 if they didn’t have to actually pay the mortgage…
My grandparents were still refinancing their home in their 80s & taking equity out and now my grandpa has passed and my grandma needs a nursing home and still owes over $300k on her home. She might get $100k back said and done. They didn’t just put herself in a bind, they put her kids in a stressful position. So it’s not just about us when we make poor money decisions, it affects those we love too.
Health decisions too. Take care yourself so your kids won't need to later
My sister and BIL keep doing that as well, they are in their 40s/50s and they owe 40K more on their house then what they paid for it 17 years ago!! 🤦♀
Sounds like she qualifies for Medicaid to cover the nursing home. Family members are not financially responsible for that.
@@DoctorSmartyPants You are correct, BUT they will take any assets once the person dies!!

These phone callers are sometimes funny.
They get advice and just mumble a yes but you can feel it's in one ear out the other
I always find it funny when people are asked how much debt they have and they come up with a number, are asked if they have a car loan and now that number is bigger, finally the mortgage and now the number is even bigger. How much debt do you have is asking for all of it
That’s exactly why they are in debt, unorganized and don’t know why they are. Just sloppy folks
Very true.
Exactly
Spot on.
I don’t care what anyone here says, you can live a comfortable life on half of what they make. Living cheque-to-cheque on $100k is ridiculous. Shows a lack of maturity; bar some exceptional circumstances

KEEPING UP WITH THE JONES
I make $34k. I have my home
Paid off. Retired at 61. No debt at all.
Tons in savings. Life is good
People who don't manage their money well when they earn a little won't manage it well when they earn a lot. Money management skills nor discipline automatically happen when one becomes a high income earner. You can always outspend what you earn. Anyone can be irresponsible with money.
I make more than three times their income and I live paycheck to paycheck. After mortgage, taxes, 401 K contributions, insurance, 529 contributions, food and clothes there is not much left. Living in San Francisco is very expensive. Houses here are about $2 million. Most families that I know make $400K to $500k per year and live paycheck to paycheck.
I learned that love doesn't pay the bills. Through experience, bad decisions at a younger age, and starting over, never get in a relationship with a person that doesn't manage finances as yourself. I don't have the energy to teach the unreachable concerning finances. Yes, you summarized it, I am single with my finances from A- Z in order. Just maybe if I am lucky a special lady will come my way!
It may be a long wait. The ladies like the bad boys. Your having your act together translates to a kind of boredom for them.
This woman has given me hope for the rest of my life. Thank you so much.
Agreed
My husband is still working and will be 68 in April. He loves his job and we don’t want to live like these people in retirement.
I think she is off to a good start; she is being humble about the whole thing, she recognize that she did wrong and wants to fix it, she is not blaming her husband but coming to him for help working together.
Best of luck and I hope it works out for them.
Spending problem.
Christina is right, the lady should take accountability and don't wait for her husband to jump in. Set an example first because you shouldn't be retiring anyway in your situation.
The wife has zero chance of getting the husband on board when she's not walking the walk herself. She needs to get her habit cleaned up and then go to couples counselling to try and get on the same page as her husband if they can't do it themselves.
I don’t think you should go in to retirement with a big mortgage 😮
Exactly...u sell ur big house for big bucks...n move into a one room shack n have plenty of cash
Why does this woman think she can retire?
You can hear how scared she is. Baby steps!
Woman is the operative word
Anyone can retire
Retirement is a age not a number!
Kristina is actually holding this woman accountable for still using her CC and refusing to cut it up.
This caller is crazy to retire when she still owes $411K on the house. What made her think it was a good idea to retire when she still has a big mortgage payment??
the American dream
Exactly! People think retirement is just reaching a certain age. Hello! You don’t have the financial stability to retire yet, lady.
I though her husband is the breadwinner since he still working? However she should at least get a part time job and help out to go along with her retirement.
@@tsaunders4684 Exactly, she needs to go back to work, even if just part-time (with their debt load, she should go back full time). Wondering why neither co-host mentioned this option to caller (you know if it were the husband calling in, they would have told him to get a 2nd job/side hustle to get those debts down)? How long have these two been married yet never got on the same page financially? Don't understand how callers don't have a list of debts/balances right in front of them when they make the call-in to show.

I agree. I love this combination of hosts.
Not really, we're here to see Dave.
Then they should make their own show. This show has lost its flair ever since Dave brought in co-hosts
Lots if people think it's a specific age regardless if you're financially ready or not
Thank God my wife and I are on the same page financially. If going into marriage and you care about finances...you have to find someone on the same page...otherwise dont bother. Many of the people that call both went into marriage with no care about personal finance and it sometimes clicks after they get married and both are doing own thing. Very rare to hear two were good with money from start and they fall away from that and in get in trouble.
Rachel is the best of all Ramsey personalities; I could watch her videos all day.
I definitely have to agree (don’t tell Dave, lol).
Hehe me too. Dave’s great but I love Rachel

Denver is very high cost of living. They need to move ASAP
This lady is crazy to retire when she still owes $411K on her mortgage. If her younger husband leaves her, she's gonna lose the house. For sure she can't pay the mortgage on her own.
How can you not know what your payment is for something you bought and are paying on monthly? If her husband did it she needs to know what happens if he dies?
It's not that surprising, if you have auto pay.
Retired with $500k worth of debt ant no money. What a mess.
Could be worse. At least they are managing to pay the bills. However, they need to get the debt under control.
It’s crazy how ppl don’t know their payments. How do you not know your house payment? Your car payment? Your card payment?? You’re way too grown to not know what’s happening under your roof and in your pocket
The reality is that many people don't. We can say it's crazy, but the fact that so many people have money issues says to me that we should question why is it that people don't know their finances.
There's an assumption that everyone should be good at finances even if they never learned about it. It also doesn't help that when they do try to learn about it, others are quick to shame them for not knowing. It's like shaming a drug addict who is trying to get help for their addiction.
I like when I see people share problems they are having and when others try to help them improve their life. Supporting each other is a good thing.
@@TheFirstRealChewy I understand people who aren't good at finances. A lot of us are here because we need advice in one area or another. But not knowing what you need to pay to keep the bank from taking your house or car is a foreign concept to me. Even if you've never heard of a savings account before, it seems common for people to know what they have to do to keep a roof over their head. That's the part that's wild. I'm glad they called in and hope they turn it around.
People get a raise and think they're millionaires🤣🤣 This goes to show that money is money no matter what amount and needs to be managed.
Many make that mistake. More they make the more they spend and more debt.
Raises benefitted my situation.
Once my salary crossed $60k I reached a financial comfort zone able to live comfortably, pay all bills, maintain zero debt, and do what I want..
From there to $160k/yr. it all went toward savings,401k/IRA contributions, and investments.
Money is money…brilliant
@@blackworldtraveler3711 That's great! Different people have different comfort points for various reasons. One might say theirs was at $24K while another might say $160K. Some might not have reached their comfort level, feel that it takes too long to get there or that they will never get there. Sometimes that can lead to living above your means.
Finally, it takes the women at The Ramsey Show to start holding other women accountable. Great advice ladies
🙄
My gut instinct is that there is more debt than she knows about and that’s why he’s trying to keep her away from the numbers. He’s ashamed that he’s not handled things well and ashamed for her to find out to full extent of the hole they’re in.
Or... his accounts are doing good... and protected from her overspendiing habits.
Rachel, amazing and inspirational help. I hope Polly takes it to heart.
Good job on the advice.
I have so many questions, main one was WHY DID SHE RETIRE!!! They need to cut the cards but she's not because they clearly aren't budgeting and working together. The husband is doing his own thing and honestly it sounds like he came back to the marriage physically but clearly he's not Back emotional in the marriage because she keeps talking about I have this, HE has this. There is no oneness at all in this relationship. I wish her luck because it sounds like she understands the issue and wants to fix it and work together but getting him on board is difficult. Money management is just one issue they need to get to the root of the issue in this marriage first!
,
Thry just arent on the same page, as long as they aren't synced up, this isn't going anywhere
People are absolutely mental when it comes to finances
🎯☝️✅💯🫣
It’s not really taught in schools, businesses constantly advertise things we don’t need with payment plans we can’t afford, plus short term economic indicators look good when people spend lots of money.
They are living a lifestyle they can't afford.
They both work really well together.
But she is spending? She can work and still collect Social Security. She should get a part time job and pay those cards off
I didn't hear that she was collecting SS yet. She just said retired and had retirement income (a pension or retirement savings). For all we know, she is 60 years old and therefore not even eligible for SS. But I agree she needs to go back to work.
@@DoctorSmartyPants then what difference would it make if it's a pension or SS she can still work at least a part time job and pay off what she owes. 60 is still young. If your up to your eyeballs in debt you can't afford to be retired!
Why retire completely if you're able-bodied, have a means of commuting, and have debt??? That seems stupid. Even getting a part-time job would help. DUH.
Leave Denver, too expensive to live there
Sell the caller
She didn’t want the smoke from Dave
Dave would have asked how old are you and are you able to go back to work. Also would have picked up on her comment about doing a budget without her spouse.
Right? Why is she retired with this huge debt? And why are they in such debt with an income that most Americans (including me) would drool over? They are right - this isn't a money problem.
No he wouldn’t. He would have said that this is the man’s fault and that he needs to find another job.
@@BestShootermanUbz exactly right. Dave let’s the woman off the hook ALL the time.

They are spending above their means. Two men children living together, yup.
400 grand left on mortgage and near retirement? That's aweful.

lost cause, $400k owed on house while retired.
If they owe 400k they better hope that house is worth well north of $1m and downsize.
The husband isn't completely innocent, but don't put it on him when you retired, IN DENVER, with thousands in debt... who does that?
She should get a part time job too
"I was hoping Dave was there." She is cryingfor help and wants someone to tell her the hard truth to give her the condfidence to tackle the problem. She only spoke of his and hers. This is a terrible situation to be in...
They’ve been living separate lives since 2015. That’s a recipe for disaster
These people are unreal! Plus the older wife is probably worried about losing the younger husband! She should not have retired!
Sounds like rice and beans time , good luck to this couple
Why would she retire if they are now living paycheck to paycheck after she retired?
retirement is often paycheck to paycheck
So she has a hidden account and may have the higher debt but thinks he's the problem?
I prefer Kristina with Rachel vs George who seemed to never let her speak. These two make a better team.
I can't imagine in 2023 people (and women at that!) will call and imply that unless Dave Ramsey is answering the phone, the rest of the personalities cannot answer the question.
Agreed, sad. My best banking mentors were all female.
I’m retired and broker than when I started…
Should I spend ~1/2 of my retirement fund to pay cash for a house --- or should I continue paying someone else's mortgage (aka: rent)? I am 68 years old, retired, in good health, have no debts and will still have an annual pension income ~$60k.
You might want to wait a few months - a year to see how much homes prices decline in your area. Will this be your 1st time to purchase a house? If yes, please consider doing a loan for actual purchase because you probably don't know how to avoid being scammed on real estate; best to leave legalities to bank's professionals to insure you actually have title to correct property.
Has crazy debt and retired. Make it make sense lol.
Paying Debt with Debt equals to more debt
My question is how can you make $9k a month and still be broke putting expenses on credit cards every month
People think loans are free money. Until they get old. I refuse to be old and broke.
Remarkable
Polly sounds like a nice lady. Hope the husband comes around, or at least makes it clear to her that she’s on her own so she can move forward. Good luck.

Well she said she is now making half of what they were making. So this makes me believe that they lost half of income but kept spending as if they were on the previous income

Wow! They are both left handed!!☺️

I'm sorry, but this woman needs to go back to work. We all know she isn't going to cut up those cards. She isn't going to quit spending.
When one got a promotion and make 30k more, there is an itch of wanting to spend more like you have a 60k promotion
Should have paid your debts before retirement
They've ran out of road. Too much much debt. Too few years. Too little income.
Don’t mess with the IRS. The penalties and interest will eat you alive and they may need assistance with the IRS debt which will cost them additionally. That is, if they are truly in trouble tax wise. It sounds like the relationship is not stable. He’s not going to listen to any women trying to tell him how to handle his finances.
$10k a month income and rolling change? She really needs the baby steps and to stop eating out, sell the RV, and vacation affordably. Owing $411k on their house and retired??? People!! Stop trying to put on airs and look fancier than you are. You should NEVER have a mortgage during retirement!
