- On December 9, 1965, A Charlie Brown Christmas aired on TV screens across America and instantly captured the hearts and ears of a generation. Bolstering the animated special, based on Charles M. Schulz’s immensely popular PEANUTS comic strip, was an engaging score from Bay Area jazz artist Vince Guaraldi, who brought characters like Charlie Brown, Lucy, and Snoopy to life through his evocative cues.
Working primarily with bassist Fred Marshall and drummer Jerry Granelli, Guaraldi paired inspired interpretations of traditional holiday fare (“O Tannenbaum,” “Hark, the Herald Angels Sing,” and “What Child Is This”) with original compositions, including the instantly recognizable “Linus and Lucy” theme, “Skating,” and “Christmas Time Is Here.” The latter song, available as both an instrumental and vocal track, featured young choral singers from St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in San Rafael, CA.
More than five decades later, the Emmy® and Peabody®-winning animated classic has spawned more than two dozen subsequent PEANUTS specials. Guaraldi’s soundtrack, meanwhile, has since become one of the best-selling jazz albums in history, second only to Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue, and regularly ranks among America’s top-selling holiday albums every December.

I tuned in in 1965. As a young child, I thought the show was a Christmas tradition. I had NO idea it was the first airing ! Funny how we keep learning, if we are fortunate.
It's *been* a Christmas tradition ever since its first telecast on December 9, 1965. I have the "50th Anniversary Edition" DVD of the special.

When I was a kid, I loved this! I would wait all year from the Charlie Brown Specials just to enjoy the music. When I got older, I developed an appreciation for jazz, and I bought the music LP, later bought the tape, later bought the CD, and now it's on my iPod. I play it all year round.

I hope I come back one day to see this comment and find happiness and remember fond times of watching these specials with you all. Every holiday season I play this album
It's all about the anticipation of the rhythm. Think rushing down the stairs to get to your presents. Tearing each bag apart. Then being exhausted form playing with everything, and getting that second charge before Christmas dinner.
Simply cannot believe I first heard Guaraldi 55 years ago..time flies when listening to his trio 😁!
I had forgotten about this song and heard it in a department store and searched desperately for it, then I realized I recognized the tone and thought Charlie Brown...glad I found it and the other favorites too.

Alot of great jazz came out in the 60s and 70s
20 years ago the people who had rented my grandma's house moved out and my aunt and I helped clean the house. Behind a cupboard we found this CD album still unwrapped. My aunt looked at it quizzically, I shrugged my shoulders and put in my bag. 3 years later around Christmas time I put it in the CD Player and was surprised how much we loved it. Today my teenage boys start to rummage around for this old CD at this time of year. It is our favorite Christmas music.
