- London building shapes sometimes provide fun nicknames. Many of the City of London buildings have odd shapes based on a protected view policy preserving unobstructed view corridors of the St Paul Cathedral and several other historic landmarks.
Welcome to the land of Big Ben, the gherkin, the can of ham, the cheese crater, the inside out building, the Shard, the onion (or armadillo or ...) and the walkie talkie. London has a sense of humor.
Mention the named buildings to anyone in London and it’s likely they know exactly what you’re talking about. If a building is created with such a bold and creative design that people will nickname it, sometimes even before the construction is finalised, then it’s doing something right. Architectural innovation is all about originality and being different from what is already out there, and that makes people talk. Londoners have used creative architecture to protect the views of historic structures as the city has grown.
The square mile or actual City of London includes the financial or insurance district known world wide including the Lloyd's of London insurance center. As this area has grown so has the nicknamed buildings.
The top 3 floors of the walkie-talkie are the Sky Garden which is free to visit. There is a café as well as a restaurant up there too which is a great spot for a brilliant view over London. The Sky garden being free to the public for the lifetime of the building was one of the ways the building was able to get planning permission. Even though it is free, you need to book an entrance slot in advance to visit the Sky Garden
Walkie Talkie Fun Fact: because of the way the glass is curved on the south side, the sun reflecting on the street was actually strong enough to melt cars in the street below and cause some shop doors below to smolder. Someone literally cooked an egg in the street from its focused sunlight refection. The building design issue was corrected by installing awnings on the Walkie Talkie.

The Gherkin sounds like a better name, unlike the pickled shaped building hehe although that could pass for a type of pickle. Some really unique architecture in London. The walkie talkie building is awesome.
