Special Pruning Tips for Better Yield - Bitter Gourd Seed to Harvest

  • In Today’s Video we are going to look at a bitter gourd plant life cycle
We will see how it went from a small sapling to a full grown plant, how it bloomed flowers and how flowers transformed into ripe fruits.
After seeing this 10 minutes long video, you will have a more than enough information to successfully grow a bitter gourd in your home
We used a bamboo support to ensure that plant grew vertically. We used a big pot whose diameter was 19 inches.
Come, let’s see how we prepared the soil for the transplantation.
We emptied half the pot and added the soil mix, which was 50% ordinary soil and 50% coco peat. We also added a manure mix which was 50% vermicompost, ¼ cup seaweed extract and ¼ cup bone meal. We then added more coco peat to the space that was left at the top., Approx 10%, then completed the whole process by adding some home made compost at the top.
It’s very important to prepare the soil well before planting any plant in it because if the soil isn’t healthy, the plant won’t be healthy as well and will have a very poor yield in terms of flowers and fruits.
Soil need to be mixed well, so that it becomes lightweight and there’s more scope for aeration and better drainage of water.
After the soil has been prepared well, carefully transplant the bitter gourd sapling you have in the pot.
We just showed you the easy way to take out the sapling out of the pot. Just up turn the pot as shown and tap it edge. This loosens the soil and the sapling comes out.
The bitter gourd is a climbing vine, so we will tie one end of the rope at the bottom of the sapling and the other end to the bamboo support at the top. So that we can train the bitter gourd to climb vertically upwards. We did this so that it doesn’t occupy much horizontal space at the bottom and we can use that extra space to plant more different types of plants.
After the sapling has been successfully transplanted, water it thoroughly, especially since it’s the first time. This will help in removing any air gap in the soil.
The bitter gourd sapling height doubled in about a week.
There are many ways of growing bitter gourd out there, but we are using the one where we won’t let any side branch grow.

+Zeenat Zeenat Hi, Karela can be planted now and you have 75 days before winters sets in.
Karela will start fruiting in 45 days so you will 30 days harvest period.
You can extend it few weeks into winters if yo grow in green house.
Or plant it against a wall where it gets full Sun. Planting a variety developed as per your local condition will be a advantage too.

As soon as fruit get pollinated and its size starts growing, we need to cover it.
Many a time fruit fly lays eggs in fruits even before they get pollinated. So it is best to cover the fruit after pollination if the problem of fruit rot is severe due to fruit fly.

How severe are the winters? They will grow bag if you can protect the roots from cold. But since these plant can be grown in a month time at start of summer, you can utilize space for winter plants.
No idea of brand you have mentioned.
Female flowers need to be pollinated same day to have better success rate

      Thanks for appreciating our efforts.
We do not use perlite or vermicuiite as it makes Soil drain too fast.
In our hot weather condition we will need to water to plant too often. Also frequent out flow of water will remove precious nutrition from pot.
For hot conditions coco peat and vermicompost are excellent mix as they drain well and at the same time Store water in them too resulting in less watering frequency and plant doing well in hot conditions.

i live in mumbai what is the ideal seed sowing period for gourds and cucumber. i use 50-50 compost and cocopeat. and what is bettet one plant in one pot or multiple plants in a single pot . and last question ideal time to grow tomatoes in mumbai. pz reply..

    • @ShashiNGautam
      @ShashiNGautam  Před 7 lety

Gourds flourishes in warm to hot climates and Mumbai have no winters so they can be planted year long. Still you can start them by January end and get yield from them till December since they are annual plants.
50 - 50 coco vermi mix is good choice. I hope you are also mixing bone meal, sea weed extract or other organic alternative to take care of plant micro nutrients needs of minerals like zinc, calcium, magnesium etc.
Tomato sowing time is May June and Nov Dec.

Hi I dont know if I will get an answer since I'm so late. I am growing bitter gourd in the UK. The vin had started producing female flowers but I dont seem to have any Male flowers to pollinate. I am worried about them drying out. Is there a way to encourage Male flowering? How many days window do we have to pollinate the female flower?

    • @ShashiNGautam
      @ShashiNGautam  Před 5 lety +1

Usually it is other way around where we have plenty of male flower. But due to sudden temperature change, we get a situation where we have only female flower. But in a week time the male flowers start blooming.
Keep checking for male flower, even one can pollinate many female flowers. Pollination window is one day.
You can spray seaweed liquid और Micronutrients to improve flower ratio situation.

Initially male flower bloom which are followed by females flowers in 1 to 2 week. Male to female ratio is 15 to 1. You can increase female flower by using special pruning technique. We have videos on that on our channel.

      Follow 1 inch rule.
Water the plant when soil 1 inch below the surface is dry.
Water them deep till whole root ball is wet. Means when water reaches till bottom of the pot.
But do not over water to prevent water coming out of bottom hole. As it will also wash out valuable nutrients out of soil.

You can grow all from gourd family, lady finger, Brinjal. Choose a spot which have 4-5 morning sun or have green shade net suitable for your area.
You may need to start seeds indoor and transplant them outdoors when they are 2-3 foot.
Hardening them first before you leave them outdoors for all day.
