Drama on a Gnarly Noosa Bar. Wednesday morning, September 20, 2023.

  • The bar was a tad punchy this morning. No big sets but the run-out gave them some added power. One tinny flipped on the way out early on and the two POB were rescued by another boat. No injuries as far as we know. Coast Guard vessel John Waddams towed the upturned boat back into shore later on and then upriver after righting it on the North Shore. Another boat (the one who rescued the first crew) got some spectacular air and almost rolled on the middle crossing later on. Never a dull moment. BOM forecast is for north to north westerly winds about 10 knots tending north to north easterly 10 to 15 knots in the afternoon. Seas: Around 1 metre. Swell: Easterly 1 to 1.5 metres. Filmed between 5.45am and 8.45am. Background Music: 'Chances'... by Silent Partner.

I have an old fibreglass hull with a hardtop. A few years back I put a 100 litre flooding ballast tank up front and as low down as possible sitting on the keel. Has a 50mm fill pipe and fills in less than a minute when I open the valve. Either pump out or will drain when on the plain with the valve open. Has made a huge difference when heading out, and also to the ride in the rough. Naturally I drain it when in a following sea.

The mistake here is he is to trimmed up causing himself to launch up as he crests the wave. He likely thinks trimming up is good due to shallow water but if you are trimmed up and apply power it pushes your transom straight to the bottom. You want your boat trimmed more down by the bow to assist not going vertical and if you are in shallow water punch up onto the plane will avoid dragging your arse causing you to squat at the stern. If it's to shallow go when the tides better.

1:09 This is the strangest 'voodoo' rescue
    you'll ever see.
Note, they swim to a rescue boat, 40' away,
a few seconds later the guy has his shirt
changed from gray to white, and puts
his canopy-top up, and the capsized boat
    vanishes, (alien intervention perhaps).
The water turns darker, another boat appears
noting that the capsized boat is gone, which
would indicate at least 5 to 10 minutes
    lapse time.
    So ...
these two in the water just decided to enjoy
frolicking in the water or the guy on the boat
was just asking them for directions and
wasn't about to pick them up. shrugs...

Nice video, & surprisingly nice music. As an aviation enthusiast, maybe boats should have small canard wings installed near the nose (sorry, bow), so that when the nose (bow) pitches up too much, the wings automatically point down into the wind to deflect the airflow & push the bow back down. This might just stop them from going full 90 degrees vertical & falling back down on their stern like what happened to the chaps in this video.

I'm also an "aviation enthusiast" (light aircraft pilot with floating hull seaplane endorsement so have dealt with wave or two). I've often thought about this concept for the large offshore power boats that sometimes get airborne with a sudden pitch up. They have virtually nothing to control pitch and roll once they're airborne and it would seem some sort of aerodynamic canard or elevator would be useful.
In the case of these boats though in this video, I doubt they're going fast enough to generate any lifting force that would be strong enough to push the bow down (and a canard installed somewhere at the front would be pretty impractical too). Interesting idea though.

    • @ronlucock3702
      @ronlucock3702 Před 9 měsíci +1

@@philipdartnell Yes, completely correct. At the point when these slow-moving boats are starting to go vertical, their horizontal velocity is basically nothing, so yes, there's no aerodynamic benefit. I am a lousy fisherman, and despite holding a marine license, I know very little about power boats. I was, however, a keen sailor, many years ago. The weather forecast, the tide chart, your skills and experience and the limitations of your vessel is something that you need to consider before every outing. On top of that, there's "gut instinct".
And keep in mind that you are never committed. Even when you've spent the time preparing the boat, picking up your mates, driving to the ramp and launching, there is still the opportunity to change your mind. There's nothing wrong with sitting at home with a cup of tea and reading your favourite fishing magazine, in fact there is a time for it.
      Enjoy your new hobby, safely.
