- I have become a big fan of Hyperlite Mountain Gear backpacks. I have the Junction 3400 pack and absolutely love it. In this video, I point out seven reasons why you should consider Hyperlite Mountain Gear for your next backpack. I do recognize that owning a backpack is a very personal thing. I never claim to have the "be all - end all" opinions on backpacks. But, here are some reasons why HMG is a great pack for your next backpacking adventure. #hyperlite #hyperlitemountaingear

with the Zpacks Arc Haul Ultra 60L. I still like the sharp look of the HMG packs. They seem to be highly
popular in the thru hiking community.

Great points on why to pick up the HMG pack! Going on two years for me, I wish I would have got the mesh pocket to help dry stuff out on trail. Also the liner is clutch for when you are faced with consistent rain. Definitely recommend HMG!

I’m still using a heavy Osprey but the older I get the more I want to switch to a more simple ultralight pack. I’ve been eyeing the Durston Kakwa 55L pretty hard. Have a great day ✌️
Brad, I am always shopping for gear. I like you love simple. I had a ZPacks Arc Haul and loved it, but I was always fooling around making adjustments. I have settled on a LiteAF 40L pack and love how simple it is. Happy Hiking

Hey Crow thanks for the video. I have used my ULA Circuit backpack for probably 6 or 7 years and am happy with it but I am considering a dyneema pack for the weight reduction. I am leaning toward the Arc Haul for the ventilation benefit. I know you’ve used an Arc series pack before and was wondering why you switched?

You said it best, packs are very personal. It does speak volumes how many hikers use HMG packs and even after a long distance thru-hike they still love them.
I had one, it was pretty good but ultimately it didn't quite work for me as well as it does others but the silver lining is that it was fairly easy to sell and I did recover a higher percentage of my investment from reselling it than I would have from another less popular make/model pack

When I was 71 I did the JMT and at full food, fuel and water resupply, loads were 36 and 46 pounds. I used the HMG 4400 and it was just fine.
Just an add on: I've used quite a few exterior frame (Jan Sport+) and interior frame (North Face+) and frameless (GoLite+) backpacks. Jan Sport were great when carrying an extra 20-25 lbs of climbing gear. I wore them all out. I've used the 4400 Porter for 10 years and got the larger pack so it was also good for winter big volume. Got the 2400 for long day cross country ski trips so room for enough warm clothing, etc. when stopping (or emergency overnight) and then the Daybreak (original version) for day hikes. Also use the Stuff Pack as big stuff sack and for summiting or around town.

Hey Mr. John. I met you at the Pinhoti Fest. I know you are a fan of the Arc Haul and I am considering that very pack. I would like to know if you have considered any other dyneema pack such as the Hyperlite?
@@micah6-8 Yes I actually bought a hyperlite 3400 Southwest. I use it a few times then returned it to REI. I personally didn't like it on my back I prefer the arc haul with the arc. Lots of hikers love that pack. I don't think you could go wrong with either one. I bought the Hyperlite from rei just in case I didn't like it. No hassle return with rei not so with Zpacks. My older arc haul is available if interested.

I have the Osprey Atmos 65L. First I want to say that it is a great pack and the anti-gravity system works great, but I am like you. All the extra zippers I have ended up not using. I actually unstrapped the flap that separates the bottom compartment so that its all open and I just stuff everything in. Honestly, I wished I would have bought the Hyperlite to begin with. No regrets with the Osprey because it is a solid pack but I would have been happier with a simpler pack and saved myself 2lbs.

I love my ULA Circuit, but was looking for something in DCF or Ultra and landed on the Kakwa 40, at the price I don't think it can be beat. Though there are a few things I'd change on it if I could've. I wish the HMG packs had an option for S straps, I had my eye on the Unbound, but j straps are a no go for me.

After my other 40L finally gave up the ghost, I ordered the Unbound 40 from HMG. Haven't received it yet due to lead time, but I am excited to get it!

How would you compare the black material vs white fabric? Some say the black fabric is more robust, but may rub thru worn clothing?
Also, all the white fabric packs that I see are very dirty looking after a few trips.
Any time someone ask me what packs I like best this is my go too. Love their packs!
Im so torn between that Junction you have and the Zpacks Arc Haul. From what ive gathered the Arc Haul is basically just a Junction with the back frame support and adjustment straps on the shoulder. And ofcourse way more expensive lmao. Im probably gonna cave and end up buying both LMAO
They are both great packs. It is hard to decide between them. The Arc Haul is much lighter. But, I think the HMG is more comfortable. Really just personal preference…✌️
I am in the market for an ultralight backpack. Due to the amount of sweating I do, I am leaning towards the z-packs arc series - but I would love to find something more budget friendly. I have multiple packs that I use and which one I pick depends on the trip & mood. I have two wooden pack baskets (commonly used by trappers & ice fishermen) These are great for spring, fall, and winter. Since they flex well they are very comfortable to wear. I have a 36L daypack that is great for day trips or a quick overnight. Although I love it, I will often soak through the back of the pack with my sweat. A pack liner is necessary. I also have a Gregory Zulu 55l that works well, has good ventilation, and is comfortable, but isn't quite right regarding the layout of the pockets and such. I've grown to dislike pack brains. They are handy for quick access to stuff during breaks on the trail, but are often in the way for getting stuff in and out of the main pack at camp. I have a couple others that are not used often enough to be worth mentioning.
The arc haul is a life changer it’s not like wearing a high priced duffel bag on your back
@@jamesking4225 I'm not doubting it's worth. My wallet just can't justify it at the moment. I'll have to wait for a little while. I'm also considering one of those packs with the sitpad insert on the back. Maybe a sitpad with big nubs like a Nemo Switchback would give me enough ventilation. I sweat enough that it's not uncommon for me to get a sweat rash on my back where the pack is if I don't use a ventilated pack.
I have the same sweaty back issue with the Gossamer Gear Mariposa 60. The Arc Haul looks awesome for my needs but I'm not spending that much for a backpack yet. I ended up going with the new Sierra Designs Flex Capacitor 40-60 because of the airflow and load capacity. It's not ultralight at 2 lb 12oz for the S/M, but I wanted to solve the issue of overheating and my shoulders getting sore from carrying a heavy load of water last Summer. I haven't tried it out on a trip yet, but it feels comfortable so far.

No, you have to purchase the torso length that fits you.

I think they sell the Southwest at REI. You may be able to try one on there. You are right, the fit on the torso is crucial on these packs. What is your torso size?

I've had my HMG for about a year and a half with about 1800 miles on it. Same as yours, and I'll use mine until I can't anymore

I have liked the reviews for HMG packs, but I am reluctant to purchase without trying one on for size. I have lived in Jordan and now S Korea. I am from U.K. but the U.K. has limited HMG dealers, who have limited stock etc. The new larger day pack also looks good as well. Would you recommend the black fabric for durability over the white lighter fabric? Thanks again for swift reply.

Is there anything you don't like about the pack? I recently considered that exact model but decided against it because of the lack of load lifters, and the price for how simple it is, especially considering they're made in Mexico now... For $350-400, I wanted something made in the USA from the newer Ultra 100/200 material. However, if you get the chance to try one on and it just happens to fit like a glove and you don't mind that they're a bit heavier than they look, then it's probably the perfect pack for you :)

When I ordered my new pack last week I didn’t realize I was joining a cult. Jokes aside there packs are a little bit more expensive then similar packs, but for me its worth a little extra money because the pack has every feature I want and no features I don’t want.

It is a clip. You can use it to clip on your belt if you ever drop pack at a campsite and do a day hike. Great little piece of gear
