I’m totally with you on the structure of Jade Legacy, Mike. I loved the book’s many iconic and emotional moments, but I kept getting booted out of the story because of how episodic it was with all the time jumps. Great trilogy overall, though! On The Name of the Wind, I love the book, but Rothfuss is definitely no Tolkien. My unpopular opinion just for you, Mike: Song of Susannah is the launchpad that makes The Dark Tower take off! 😁

Loved this vid-it’s important to be true to ourselves and also to let people know when things don’t work for us to help others calibrate their tastes to ours.
I was right with you on Red Sister, just couldn’t connect to the writing at all. Interestingly I also really disliked Locke Lamora, but loved Red Seas Under Red Skies (it does much less of the flashback thing).
You made a great decision not finishing out the Poppy War, I thought bk 3 was an outright disaster that doesn’t change the storytelling style from bk 2 in any noticeable way.
And I def had a different experience with Jade Legacy, with the time skips not bothering me at all and actually enjoying spending more time with the adolescent kids and middle aged protags. On the internet I guess we’re supposed to lash out if someone has a different opinion, but wonder of wonders, I respect and welcome your opinion since it’s all about our very personal experiences of a story. Keep doing you Mike!

I love that you said exactly what I can’t stand in too many newly written protagonists. The pride in disrespecting their leaders - while serving in the same organization. It’s the antithesis of service. I totally get rebellion when the authority is the enemy but - maybe it’s my age or something- no one gets respect by throwing tantrums which is how I see certain authors writing the heroes(?).
Thank you for this review. I especially appreciate you saving my time and energy. 😂

Read The Will of the Many back in July and thought it was fantastic. I never reread books but that was one of the rare times where I had the urge to start it over again immediately. I may actually try rereading it right before the second book drops later this year.
OTOH, I read The Book That Wouldn't Burn by Mark Lawrence a month ago and I absolutely dreaded reading almost every page. Haven't read any other books by Lawrence but that wasn't a good first impression for me.
I would echo what some others have said regarding The First Law. I gave every book three stars. Thought some of the characters were good, didn't care much for what plot there was. I'll get around to reading the other books in the First Law world but not in any big hurry.
Just finished up Howling Dark in my quest to catch up for the new Sun Eater release in April. I enjoyed the first book well enough, I liked the ending of Howling Dark but overall, I wouldn't say I've been wow'd with Sun Eater at this moment in time. Hoping Demon in White blows my socks off like it seems to do to everyone else but we'll see.

    @douglasdea637 Před 5 měsíci +4

    My unpopular opinions:
    1. I agree about Name of the Wind. It's good, but Qvothe is just too much of a Marty Stu character. In everything. A 15 year old kid but he's got hundreds of plays memorized. Okay. He learns to play a musical instrument and wins his first contest, even with the instrument breaking part way through. Okay. He takes more college classes than anyone else, completes all the course work half way through the semester and then teaches his teachers. Nope, that broke me. I've been through a lot of college, that just ain't happening. (And he did that while playing his instrument and creating better magical equipment than the college had, and being a sociable person. Sigh.) I haven't read the second book but I heard that at age 16 he becomes a sex god, the best lover anywhere. Double sigh.
    2. Book of the New Sun. I've ranted about this before, I've read the four main books. I get that's it's in the future and there are aliens and robots around. It's still just poor writing all-around. I don't see why it gets so, so much love. There are a lot of mysteries and very little is explained.
    3. Xanth books by Piers Anthony. No one talks about them today but back in the 80s they were huge, at least in my school they were. I read five of them. They're good, not great. The humor is alright but not hilarious. Why everyone seemed to think they were the funniest, best fantasy of the time I just don't get. Frankly I preferred Asprin's Myth Adventures books.

the thing with licanius trilogy for me was very weird: everybody said the writing quality will be better for each book. each book will be better than the one before. and I totally felt the other way. shadow of what was lost was close to 5 stars for me, and then the next two were each time half a star less. Also I did a 1month break after 150 pages of book 3 because every piece of excitement was lost for me after the plot twist at the end of book 2. Especially because it never got any tension again and the ending of book 3 missed the mark for me. the "twist" was no twist at all. I know what it was supposed to mean to me emotionally, but it did not connect with me that much

Love the video. The Jade series was good to ok for me, but agreed with the skipping around in 3. Felt more disjointed, but disagree (since it was just ok series for me) that it should have gone 5 long. Agree completely with Red Sister, dropped after one there as well, Muderbot I'm in the same boat with as well, though since they're so short, I am still going to continue to see if it grows on me. Gentleman's Bastards are my all time favorite with 1 being the best of the best, so I disagree there lol. Also Name of the Wind is top 10 all time for me too, so another disagreement. Cradle series I'm enjoying currently, though agree with your criticisms. I think the fast paced nature and the easy read and constant "levelups" are keeping me going for now (in book4 right now) so we'll see if it ends up falling off. Brandon Sanderson is my favorite author and yet I completely agree on Era 2. I read them all to keep up with Cosmere lore with a buddy, but book 1 was great and the rest pretty lackluster with disappointing characters all around (Wayne just kept getting more and more annoying for me). Poppy wars I completely agree with too. So all in all we agree on 5/8. Cheers. PS, I finally subbed!

While several I disagree with you, others you are right on the money. Tchaikovsky, in reading 5-6 of his books now, there are only 1-2 that I thought was a 4 star, he is so popular, maybe it's me? Richard Nell, I felt exactly the same, was so disappointed with the direction of book two, while book one was great. Mistborn Era 2 to me, was just a different story in and of itself, and not as good as Era 1.

I've just finished reading Childhood's End and for me it started off well then went quickly down the tubes.
Nonsensical leap in evolution with no apparent catalyst, just the removal of most things that would make people strive to achieve anything and provide them with values and morals.

Jade City: Did not care about the Kaul family at all. Not interested. Berro was the character I wanted to know about, and he's hardly in it!
Poppy War: Same exact opinion as you.
Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn: Tad Williams writing is not for me. It certainly has beauty but was also very distracting for me. Too many similes every other sentence. And the story is the slowest I've ever read and this is coming from someone who doesn't mind the slog in the Wheel of Time. I really thought I would love Tad Williams.
The Wheel of Time: The Eye of the World is one of my favorite books in the series. I like it more than The Shadow Rising.

I know everybody else seems to love it, but The Faithful and the Fallen Series by John Gwynne did not click for me. While I enjoyed the plot, I could not get emotionally invested in any of the characters. It felt like all the characters were written in the same way and had the same personality. Corban for example seems to be written and have the same personality as all the other adult characters. Completely took me out of the story. Having said that, I did read the The Faithful and the Fallen after I read all nine Joe Abercrombie book. Maybe First Law just spoiled me.

Ahhhh you voiced my feelings so well! I am heartily sick of seeing the same books over and over again being waved in front of the camera, being told ‘this is the greatest thing since sliced bread’! (If I see that bloody book Fourth Wing again, I will scream - I am NOT interested in it - why do I want to know about dragons (or anything for that matter) having sex? I won’t be reading it!
    “Does it have spice?” Grrrrrrrrr
Does everyone read the same books and never venture into pastures new?
Trying to suggest books is met with such hostility that I have given up. When I first started reading fantasy, I was desperate for recommendations and, may I say, without them I would not have read Joe Abercrombie and others! Imagine that!!!!
Part of the problem is the arrogance of youth! I may be old, but I know a bit about fantasy books, just listen to me and digest some of what you hear! When you’ve read so many books and series, you do bring something to the table!

Hi Mike. I grew up reading literary fiction and some hard sci fi, and always felt a mild contempt for other genres, especially fantasy. It all seemed a bit childish to me. But then I watched the first season of GoT and had some sort of revelation. I watched it twice in a row and lauched myself into the books. It was an amazing experience. When I finished them, I decided to read more fantasy and, following the raving reviews, I picked up Name of the Wind. However, after a while I started thinking: 'What am I missing here? Why is this so underwhelming when compared to GoT? Isn't this considered juvenile fiction?' Do you find this a common experience, Mike?
