I love the look that people get when listening to Wintersun for the first time the look of “I don’t know what the fuck is going on but it’s great” also I want to note that jari (singer) lost half of one lung due to tuberculosis in his military days. He also composes all of their songs. Another one of the great Finnish musicians
And he is a guitarhero, mastermind of music.

It`s a defining moment in your life the first time you hear Wintersun.
When I first, a little while ago, very timidly approached this piece, it was because I wanted to see what Kai was doing before Nightwish. I was SURE that I wouldn't like it. I was raised on Barry Manilow. Nana Mouskouri. The Partridge Family. Hall and Oates. Sigh. I thought I could just , you know, SNEAK in and sit quietly by the door for a minute. Out of the way, and not bother anybody. And maybe crotchet or something.
Ended up wanting to shriek up at the moon, like a blood crazed rabid werewolf. Cuz my DNA remembered that I'm half Viking, and half Pict. My lizard brain has explicit memories of going over Hadrian's little failed wall experiment, and slaughtering Roman soldiers. The other part of me KNOWS I grabbed up a war axe and laid waste to whole monasteries of monks, and stole everything that wasn't nailed down. Which is a hard thing to find out about yourself at MY age!
Love your comment :D Big fan of Wintersun myself! To me, their music expresses so many raw emotions. Last winter, it was like a brain massage (wake up, wake up!) each freezing morning on my way to work, preparing for the battles of the day :)

Sigh.Since I decided to have a fast, thoroughly NON committal glance at Metallica, because I thought it was TIME....Turns out that James Hetfield is a gateway drug. Maiden, The Hu, Bloodywood, NIGHTWISH!!!!!! It all was LURKING like starved sharks, circling my life boat! James has a lot to answer for!

It's so cool watching other musicians react. They hear things that we don't hear and I love that.
When you say 'we' you mean the musically inept right? You don't need to be a musician to catch all the elements. Just listen to it over and over if you have low aural skills.
Most extreme metal fans hear exactly the same as them. These musicians just react this way because it is so god damn good.
I miss Jukka a lot. He's such a great showman and drummer. However, Nightwish couldn't be in better hands than with Kai. That man is a weapon. Like a tactical nuke on drums. He's pure destruction. Incredible artists all around in this band.

Actually Kai and Jukka had known each other a long long time. Kai was the one who helped Jukka to improve his drumming and helped Jukka to fix "unhealthy" drumming techniques.

Jari Mäenpää (singer guitarist) is mastermind behind the band. Wintersun started as his soloproject and he had to leave Ensiferum (great band also) because Wintersun took so much time.
Other wizards are Teemu Mäntysaari (guitar backing vocals), Jukka Koskinen (bass backing vocals) and of course Kai. Jari is focusing on singing and they hired Asim Searah to play guitar.
Hope you continue with Wintersun... there is still two songs from same rehearsals Time and Land of Snow and Sorrow. Please and peace 🙏🏼😎✌🏼

Vocally he is even more impressive, given that he sings like that while missing half of one of his lungs from Teburculosis.

Well Kai is probably the best drummer in Finland. You he used to play other genre than just metal. And Wintersun is one the best metal bands world wide. Seen them live couple of times and they murdered it.

This one is absolute masterpiece. I think this might be called some viking anthem. Vocals, drums, harps and flute melodies, all perfect. Somewhat harsh, but romantic poetry of lyrics during intermezzo. Chants. Overall melody. Gives you an atmosphere of vikings preparing to raid, and sailing. Magnificent piece of art.
Don't know if you noticed or not, but for me it really stands out, that lead singer does vocals and plays at the same time. Afaik, this is really hard thing to do, and it is given, if you don't have such a talent, it is unbelievably hard to train it. And he has lost half of his lung during military service, yet his voice is still strong, clear and he can do clean, fry and growls. 😍😃
