Compare this to Yuji, who eventually looses all sense of hope- and keeps fighting regardless, the eternally winding cog. It's literally pointed out that abusing the nuke button of Mahagora has capped his potential Not to mention how Toji checked his shit fairly easily, despite Meguimi being the (self-estranged) darling of his family. Toji was mocked for his "lack of" potential and he turned out to be one of the most broken characters in the setting not despite, but because of this. Compared to Meguimi valued mostly for their( theoretically) limitless potential of the ten shadows, that it's been proven he lacks the ability to realise. Toji's A foil to Meguimi just as Megumi's a foil to Itadori. .We also know this because when we see Sukuna uses it, it's what tips the tide against Gojo- if the Legendary Fraud was reduced to his baseline power set, he would have been folded long before he could use Hien Era Strong Airport his way to victory. Indeed, it implied if Megmui had the time to grow, or could figure out how to claim Mahagora for himself, HE could do the same. And now we get this- where he collapses because he hasn't got the dog in him that Yuji "Suffering Builds character" Itadori does- or a hype man on the scale of Aoi to put the fight back into him. It's mentioned early on that a good sorcerer is usually somewhat crazy, and indeed most of the greatest sorcerers we see in the series fit that mould. Gojo certainly counts, Sukana counts, Todo counts, and Yuji's almost insane compassion could also count, and even some of the "saner" greats also have ludicrous amounts of trauma- Yuka's been stalked by his girlfriend's ghost most of his you, Hiruruma was driven mad by the(in) justice system, and Maki's trauma could fill a manga by itself. To borrow from Wh40k-"Only the insane have strength enough to prosper." It's too consistent to be an accident. Megumi's tragedy is that he'll never reach his powerset's full potential, because he doesn't have the psychosis, Trauma, or sheer willpower needed to reach that potential. He's just...too sane to reach the peak.

Megumi's entire reason for existing and fighting is gone - his body was used to kill his mentor (and borderline father figure) and his sister (his entire reason for being a sorcerer). Why do jjk fans expect him to immediately stand up and say "let's go Yuji this is our jujutsu kaisen"? This isn't MHA - characters go through shit and do not fully recover.
