About the piece:
"Traum Maschine" for symphonic wind orchestra and optional narrator was commissioned by the representational orchestra "Westfalen Winds" in 2007 and 2008 and is dedicated to the artistic director Ulrich Schmidt.
Ulrich Schmidt's idea was to develop a composition that represents the medium of wind orchestra in all its breadth and presents the great tonal richness of this line-up.
Thiemo Kraas then wrote a piece in the form of "12 sketches for wind orchestra". In twelve very different, partly attaca movements, he presents all the instruments of the wind orchestra and gives each of these instruments a special function and its own character.
The composition was based on original music as well as on the music of the Renaissance, for example. The influence of the so-called minimal music, as represented by representatives such as John Adams, Philip Glass or Steve Reich, is clearly noticeable.
The story that underlies the composition is about Professor Träumli and his assistant Tollpi, who build a machine in which they can fly into their dreams. They travel to the time of castles, knights and witches and experience all sorts of exciting adventures ...
The medium "music for children" is always of great importance for Thiemo Kraas, who is active as a music educator himself. He wants to awaken with his "dream machine" the boundless childlike joy and enthusiasm for the music. (compare publisher Rundel, www.rundel.de)
