    Alex, you were NOT being paranoid about that man following you. Even if he wasn't following you, it hurts no one to be cautious. I think, also, that you said in the pet store that you were going to to Woolworth's. He was likely listening to you and looked up the closest Woolworth's to the pet store to try to find you.
    If anything like that happens again, look up the nearest police station and drive straight there. Typically, they'll leave once they see where you're pulling in. You don't have to file a report or anything, if you don't want to; you can just wait for the creep to drive past and GTFO.

      I really recommend ‘The Gift of Fear’ by Gavin de Becker. Great evidence as to why we are so rarely paranoid and far more likely to be correct about something being ‘off’.

    I don't think you even realized it, but in the pet store one of the things you said "on the phone" was that you were going to go to a Woolworths. At that point he had a pretty good idea of what place he could find you at next. He could have very easily stayed back a little bit more because he felt safe in letting you go knowing he could find you again. Sometimes you've got to go past the place you said you were going to go to and find another one to make sure that they aren't following you. They'll just assume you meant the closest one to where you were at, it wouldn't be logical for you to go past that to get to a different one. People be crazy. I was always taught to drive to some place with a lot of people around who could do something. So police station, fire station, emergency room would all work.

    Hey Alex! What I do when I feel someone is being creepy/following me, if I’m somewhere that is a business, I’ll notify the staff members (or if that doesn’t feel safe, I’ll just ask if they can help carry my products to the car!). Also if you think someone is following you in a car, go through a fast food drive through- they likely won’t follow you into there since there are cameras, and you can notify the workers via the speaker if you need to call police or anything!

      I was followed a couple of times while driving a few years ago. Never go home. Drive busy streets only if possible, don’t get out the car, lock the doors, and ultimately do some big loops of the streets if needed so they have no Idea where you were headed. If you know of someone you can get to who will be in go there but be very careful if you get out the car and when you leave. If you can call hands free for a friend to meet you that is good. Do your best to never be super low on fuel and be forced to stop. Also, check the backseat before you get in, and the boot/truck if there is enough space for a person.
      If someone really wants to hurt you, and specifically you, then you may have a bigger problem than small action like this can tackle, but at least make the serial killers work for it…….

      @caity_witha_C Před rokem

      @@alicianorris9352 yeah, this was suggested by our local police when my sister was followed while driving. They said it’s good because of the cameras, you don’t need to leave your vehicle, it’s not disclosing your address, and it’s a very public area.

    Another tipp: take a picture of the car/ license plate and if possible their face and send it to someone.
    If someone follows you in a car, take weird turns, like driving around the same block twice etc, so you can be sure they're following you!

    Alex, feeling like you are being followed is scary. It's not an unreasonable fear, especially when we live in such an unstable world. It's happened to both me and my sister (separately) a couple of times, and it's an awful feeling. I'm so glad you are ok! Don't let yourself feel like you were being unreasonable. Protecting yourself is a good thing. If it ever happens again, drive to the nearest police or fire station. You don't have to go in, but it will deter anyone with bad intentions. And you put yourself in a situation where you can easily get help if you need it. Please take care!

    I had a job cleaning houses 8 years ago, and our rule was to pick a direction and clean in a circle, basically. So we could clean from right to left around the room, or left to right. Either way, we wanted to finish where we started, which was the door. Honestly, that cleaning job helped me to cope with the anxiety I'd get over cleaning my own space. If I just start with the furthest corner and work my way around to the door, it's significantly less stressful.
    I'm so glad that you came home safe. It's been years since I've experienced such a thing, but I definitely know how that feels. I definitely think that he was listening in to your "conversation", and you did let it slip where you were going next. Completely not your fault, as you were caught in the moment and just trying to make it seem natural. You still did everything right, but that slip of the tongue definitely ended up confirming that he was targeting you. I'm proud of you for making a dominant stand in the store, though. As frightening as it is to make eye contact, making them uncomfortable in turn is a good course of action.

There's such a nice picture of her from around the time she got pregnant with me where she's wearing shorts just like that, and it's one of the few photos of her from after she married my social dad where she seems young and happy and vibrant like she was before.
    Also thank you for the accidental purring cat asmr, also very anxiety relieving. I'm so sorry you had to experience that, that's an awful thing to have happen, and I hope it doesn't deter you from continued progress with the anxiety of the outer spaces. (I know first hand how stressful experiences make everything else more stressful afterward.... And I've also had moments where my friend's mom, who I was living with when my OCD got really bad again, would offer to do my laundry for me, which I was panicked about doing because everything was "contaminated," including the laundry room itself, which was also very narrow and impossible to navigate without brushing up against something, and she specifically asked me at one point if maybe it would be better for me to not watch her do it.... But I insisted.... I had that problem again recently, where I nearly had a panic attack and had to call out of work literally last minute because my landlord had given me 24hr notice that I didn't receive until time-of that pest control was coming "between 8 and 5" and they had to enter the apartment whether I was home or not, and I had to make myself be home so I could observe to make sure they didn't touch anything "contaminated" and spread it to other parts where I wouldn't know where and then I'd unknowingly spread it through the whole apartment....)

  • @raigne86
    @raigne86 Před rokem +13

    The first thing that I was acutally diagnosed with, before knowing I had generalized anxiety disorder, before knowing I was on the spectrum, was the panic disorder. I was agoraphobic in college. I couldn't go anywhere that wasn't back and forth to school or to one specific store. It took about 5 or 6 years to gain nearly full independence. The pandemic took it away. I regressed so much because it fed into my inclination to stay in, because everyone was told to so it became normal. Exposure is the only way to get that independence back. Going out with someone is a good first step. That way if you have a panic attack they can make sure you are safe. Part of my therapy to maintain it was to force myself to go out somewhere alone once a week, whether it was to the movies, or a restaurant. Also if my knee jerk reaction to a thing was, "I don't want to do that," I would ask myself if it was because I was afraid, and if the answer was yes, I would make sure I did the thing. I would tell my boyfriend (husband now) that I was planning to go to keep me accountable. I've compounded it by moving to a foreign country to marry him, and it's been a very depressing struggle for several months, even though I have been here before and know exactly what I'm supposed to do.
    Edit to add: Always trust your instincts. The dude opening the boot is weird. I had a coworker once who had a similar experience, and when she talked to another coworker whose spouse was a police officer, she found out there'd been a couple of abductions in that area, and she ended up reporting the person because she'd recorded their license plate.

    Good job describing your surroundings! You could tell the manager of the grocery store what is going on. If you can point the guy out, they can keep him in the store while you leave and give you a head start!!! Or have someone walk you out! Also, my 30 days is 30 days of movement… so I’m not sure what pictures to post in the discord!

    I understand the urge to just stay in your house where you feel safe but that can also work against you in terms of your mental health. It can turn what might be anxiety inducing into a much bigger phobia.
    I was in a very similar situation when I was younger and got dangerously close to just becoming a complete shut-in, think hikikomori, it took a lot of work to get to the point where I could go out and have a much better quality of life. I just don't want you to have to go through the same thing.
    That cat was gorgeous and had such a lovely purr! You're clearly a lovely person given how animals will come up to you, they're good judges of character.
    That cleaning timelapse at the end was really satisfying to watch to watch for some reason, just watching stuff get done.
    Breaking things down into small chunks is one of the best ways for ADHD brains to get big things done, it stops us from getting overwhelmed and shutting down.
    Have you checked out the How to ADHD channel? She has a lot of good advice and explains things really well.

    Seeing those baby birds reminded me of last year's summer vacation when I went for a walk in the woods with my mum and we found a baby bird that fell from the nest... We found a place where they bring up those birds, so we called my sister who immediately said she'd drive me and the bird to that place...
    Soooo sweet and cute.
    Bird survived~~~ ^^

    The basics of CBT have been life changing for me. For me, the deep breathing is great for when I’m at a super high anxiety point. But it also has helped me to realize that when I’m starting to feel anxious I can find dependable ways to distract my mind to calm myself. ❤

    You are very right to be being cautious and trusting your gut. I have had this happen a couple of times when I was walking. One time the guy following hid in a bush I only saw it because I had stopped to make sure he passed and I watched him in a bus stop reflection. I won't go into detail but each time I was very sure they were trying to hurt me. I reported them and they were BOTH found to have been convicted previously of terrible things, the other one appearing in the news for trafficking. I struggle leaving the house alone after these things and also struggle with ocd and anxiety. This made me have a little cry seeing you upset I am so glad you were safe Alex. x

    I'm so sorry you had that awful man following you. I'm glad your parents taught you well and that you're self aware. I hope you checked your car for tags or trackers. He overheard where you were headed and could have tagged your car while you were at Woolies. Also, as started here previously, a police station may not be a bad idea. Or a mechanic. If for no other reason than to have them check for anything out of place on your car. I'm so proud of how well you handled that whole situation.

    In Cyprus typically for breakfast it will be a cup of tea or coffee, a cigarette if you're a smoker, some toast with humlumi and or a cured meat we have called lounsza, a boiled egg & a sausage we have called loganigo. Cereal is pretty common as well especially for younger children, but we usually have toast because it's so hot for nearly all of the year & you just don't get much of an appetite first thing in the morning.

    Your description of being stressed out by strangers reminds me of the dorsal vagal shutdown I just came out of. Basically, my nervous system got overwhelmed, and I went into a state where any stimulation triggered anxiety symptoms. I really could not deal with social interactions at all. It was like nails on a chalkboard. I finally figured out I was locked into a trauma response, and I needed to reprogram my system.
    I learned about this from the video Polyvagal Theory in Action, where they act out the different parts of the nervous system's response to stress. When they got to dorsal, I said oh, that's where I am.
    I've done a lot of things to recover, and it sounds like you are, too. I just wanted to share one tool that really helps me - Apollo Neuro - which just generates a gentle vibration on the skin to calm the nervous system, developed by a psychiatrist.
    Thanks for sharing and being so open about your journey - your struggles and your joys.

    the groceries thing is so valid, i'm not in a very big town and even I feel crowded by strangers sometimes. the thing that sets me back most at shops are ppl standing way too close especially in line bc i'll give myself space between the person infront but then someone will be breathing down my neck so i inch forward and then the person behind does and suddenly i'm sardined and want to scream.
