We have a long history of the Stoics being devastated by things. Cato at the loss of his brother. Marcus and the victims of the plague. Seneca undone by his exile. Stockdale’s body ravaged by 7 years in the Hanoi Hilton.
They did not simply shrug these things off. How could they? They were human beings. While Stoicism promises to help you build an “inner citadel,” a fortress of power and resilience that prepares you for the difficulties of the world, it makes no promises to make you superhuman. A Stoic isn’t someone invincible.. A Stoic is someone who puts themself back together so they can do what needs to be done, for themselves and for others.

Ryan I’m glad I didn’t send this to my dad like I nearly did half way through! He’s old school ignorant, quite intelligent but legit thinks he’s borderline genius. You can’t challenge any of his bullshit because he’ll fly off the handle and (if you’re not family) will never talk to you again.
Can you recommend any vids where you’re not plugging your books? Obviously nothing wrong with that, but he’ll feel like you’re trying to brainwash him into buying your book lol. I think you can relate . You changed my life btw, from multiple suicide attempts to meditating and journaling every morning and every night, kick starting my career in caring and also made me reconcile a 3 year period of not talking to my dad, and a 15 year period of not talking to my brother. Question: How do you reconcile the heinously evil actions taken by MANY military members and politicians, in obedience to an evil empire that crushes individual freedoms at every opportunity that won't result in open rebellion... with the timeless value and demands of ethics? You are not confronting these unwitting foot soldiers and power hungry, lying politicians with their multiple violations of ethics, justice, natural right freedoms, theft, extortion, coercion, bribery, etc... Would not our philosophical beacons be confronting this extreme and intentional malevolence by confronting those who further it, for a paycheck and power? What would happen to your "career" if you did, and could this be a reason why you will not approach this topic of conversation? Do you believe the State (government made up of humans) known as the USA is anything other than an evil empire? What am I, a student, to make of such an unwillingness to address the elephant in the room? Will you not speak truth to corrupt power?
(I have no political affiliations and have always belonged to the centuries old majority... people who don't vote in obviously bought and paid for politics)
