  • I try the two sets of bowls I use, plus three other that take a wider line, indoors at my new club on a bowls ramp to determine the line they take. Let's see what happens.

    Here's an idea for another interesting video. Comparing same bias but different size bowls. 00s 2s 4s do the heaviest largest go further or shorter. Bowlers go smaller hoping they will get up easier. Is it a fallacy?.

    To add to my previous note, I have Drake Pride PRO 50. Would be interesting to see the difference in bowling line for size 1H vs 2H vs 3H and then again between short and long heads. Each line should be slightly different. Thanks for all your great videos

      That would be good to try out. Sadly, I don't have access to all the sizes, but one day I may try different sizes from the same model if I can, it would be interesting to see the result.

    Thanks. I would be very interested in getting a bowls ramp. Could you make further inquiries about where it comes from? I think it would be very useful when introducing the game to beginners because it is very clear that the curving comes from the bowl's engineering, not some 'English' applied by the bowler's arm!

      I did check online and the only ones I found were plastic chutes that did not appear to be that good and very expensive. I will look further and ask around.

    Firstly, Thank you Alec for your fantastic and informative videos, as a new bowler I have really found them very helpful. I would be interested to hear your views as to the narrow line your Drakes Pride professional bowls took as they were very close to your Aero Defiance but according to the manufacturers published bias charts and comparison bias charts published by various suppliers I would have expected the Aero and DP bowls to behave very differently. I can only think of two possible reasons (a) Substantial variability between each set of the same make of bowls or (b) The comparison bias charts are not very useful. Have you compared other Drakes Pride professional or Aero Defiance bowls to try and determine an explanation? Thanks in advance.

    • @LawnBowlsforFun
      @LawnBowlsforFun  Před rokem +1

      Hi Neville, I was surprised too, the Defiance did not run as straight a line as I was expecting, although the DP's I expected to bend slightly more as well. The difference on where the bowls ended up was much closer than expected, in fact surprising. I like Aero Defiance on a very fast rink especially if I have to play controlled weight as I seem to hit the target more often. However, the DP's are slightly better if they get blocked. I use DP Professionals outdoors, although I borrowed a set of Aero Sonics, which although similar to DP Professionals, seem hold the line longer. Lastly, I simply like the feel of the Aero bowls grips, they just seem comfortable. At the end of the day both are good bowls and it is just a case of getting used to them.

      @@LawnBowlsforFun Hi Alec, many thanks for your reply, I tried indoor bowling at the weekend and found with the Drakes Pride professionals the line was to the right of the rink marker of the next rink, so a couple of questions (1) Is that a typical line for these bowls and (2) For outdoor bowling I have been using both marks on the green and other references (at the end of the rink) to help with my line, however indoors the rink markers get obscured by other players and there are no marks on the carpet to help. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

    Very Interesting video Alex. Its a pity you did not show some of the other bowls like Taylor Ace, Taylor Vector VS, and Henselite Tigers or even the Tiger Evo. Mainly because I have 3 sets Aces, VS's and Tigers myself and would have like to se how these compare. Perhaps if you get the chance you could do another comparison on the suggested bowls, that is if you have the time.
    I really enjoy your video's keep up the good work :-)

      Yes Michael, I wish now I had borrowed some of those you listed. It was fun to do so I will do another as soon as I can. It was quite surprising how similar my two sets bowled, so I need to do it again, just to double check the results.

    I'm wondering if it is problematic playing with the internationals on an end rink running down the ditch side, especially at full lengths. Just for laughs the other week I practiced with a set of henselite classics on an end indoor rink, trying to fit that wide bias and hook finish in from T to T was a challenge ..not impossible but consistency was a problem...I had great fun with them though.

    • @LawnBowlsforFun
      @LawnBowlsforFun  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes, it would be a challenge, but it depends on the rink and how much green you gave to take. On my home green it is doable, you just have to get quite close to the ditch, but on faster greens I feel it would be hard work, especially if the jack is moved. It's fun trying though. :)

    • @LawnBowlsforFun
      @LawnBowlsforFun  Před rokem +1

      No, the sizes varied a little, mainly 1's but a couple of 2 and 3's. It would be interesting to try out a set of bowls, all the same model, but different sizes. In theory they should all end up in the same place, but will they? I may try it one day. :)

    Are they all same size and weight

    • @LawnBowlsforFun
      @LawnBowlsforFun  Před rokem

      That is a good question. If my memory serves me right, they are all heavyweights in 1’s and 2’s, so it should not make a great deal of difference, but it would be interesting to do an experiment to see if the same make and model does vary depending on size. I think weight may affect distance, but only marginally, size should not matter. Maybe I will do it one day. 😁

  • @johnjonesToffeeman

    Surely the bias is determined by the strength of the bias not the brand?

    • @LawnBowlsforFun
      @LawnBowlsforFun  Před 8 měsíci

      Yes, maybe I did not make that clear. Various manufacturers make narrow, medium and wide bias bowls. For example Drakes Pride Professional and Taylor Ace are both medium bias bowls, so both are ideal for slow or fast surfaces, it’s a matter of choice which one you choose. I am happy with either, but I know some prefer one over the other.

    • @LawnBowlsforFun
      @LawnBowlsforFun  Před 23 hodinami

      Yes, I did call them Grooves, an error on my part, but I did type Sonics in the edit when I realised my mistake, so I thought it was clear. They are sonics, not grooves. I have always said I am an amateur at this, proves I was right. 😊
