  • Kevin Gausman's splitter is one of the filthiest pitches in baseball.
In 2021, Gausman had a .133 batting average against his splitter with a 46% whiff rate.
His Splitter grip also incredibly unique. Gausman discusses his splitter with a ton of detail. Pitchers and pitching coaches, it's a must watch.

It's so enlightening to hear him say that some guys pronate well and other guys snap off breaking balls well but it's rare for someone to be good at both. I could never throw change ups effectively but I can throw every type of breaking ball well. Makes sense now that my wrist is just built to go one way better than the other.

Funny thing him showing this isn't like even a MLB pitch could pick this up easily maybe even never some pitches are perfect for that one pitcher but maybe a highschool kid might see this and be able to work on it over years

What makes a pitch? Its spin axis? The Grip? Its flight characteristics and movement? Because that’s a changeup in all but movement axis

  • @Justjest2415

Mcclanahan does the same grip but calls it a changeup.

When I played baseball as a kid, I never understood this pitch. I could always see the pitcher's fingers split, and I knew not to swing at it because it wasn't going to hit the strike zone. This seemed like a junk pitch that never deceived me.

This is pitching porn. It's wild how a slight change can make so much difference. The thumb placement when he wants it for a strike compared to a nasty one with a lot of movement is insane. Then he pushes his thumb against his index????

It's like half a circle change, almost Airbender-esque but moreso down.
