Albert Schweitzer (1875-1965) performs Bach's chorale, "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God," BWV 720. This recording was made in September 1952; Schweitzer -- who at the time recorded six chorale preludes (BWV 720, 600, 731, 768, 636, and 643) is playing a 1932 Haerpfer organ (incorporating portions of the previous organ by Rinkelbach), in the Parish Church, in Gunsbach, Alsace, France. I created this video from an LP collection entitled "Columbia Basic Library of Great Classical Music - 300 Years of Immortal Music Performed by the World's Leading Artists." The serial number of this collection -- comprised of 3 LPs and issued sometime in 1955/56 -- is L3L-233. (Schweitzer's original recording was issued by Columbia records, serial number ML-5042, around the same time.) A booklet is included in this set with photos and discussion of the various works that are performed; I have included images of several pages. All the images in this video are taken from the LP, LP box, and the aforementioned booklet, with the exception of the images of Bach which appear at the very end of this presentation. So that there is no question in the mind of the listener, I rely principally on these types of images in order to document the authenticity of historically important recordings such as these.

Glad I came on this piece at least now after it's been on the air for 8 years!
A great man Dr.Albert Schweitzer N.L. playing this great prelude of the great J S Bach who was in turn inspired by the hymnody of the great reformer Martin Luther .
    Soli Deo Gloria.

this song is actually from Martin Luther

The basic melody is by Martin Luther; the arrangement, what all the harmony and counterpoint, is by Bach.
