San Diego is a city in the U.S. state of California on the coast of the Pacific Ocean, approximately 120 miles (190 km) south of Los Angeles and immediately adjacent to the border with Mexico. With an estimated population of 1,423,851 as of July 1, 2019, San Diego is the eighth-largest city in the United States and second-largest in California. It is part of the San Diego-Tijuana conurbation, the second-largest transborder agglomeration between the U.S. and a bordering country after Detroit-Windsor, with a population of 4,922,723 people. The city is known for its mild year-round climate, natural deep-water harbor, extensive beaches, long association with the United States Navy, and recent emergence as a healthcare and biotechnology development center.
San Diego has been called "the birthplace of California". Historically home to the Kumeyaay people, it was the first site visited by Europeans on what is now the West Coast of the United States. Upon landing in San Diego Bay in 1542, Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo claimed the area for Spain, forming the basis for the settlement of Alta California 200 years later. The Presidio and Mission San Diego de Alcalá, founded in 1769, formed the first European settlement in what is now California. In 1821, San Diego became part of the newly declared Mexican Empire, which reformed as the First Mexican Republic two years later. California became part of the United States in 1848 following the Mexican-American War and was admitted to the union as a state in 1850.
The city is the seat of San Diego County and is the economic center of the region as well as the San Diego-Tijuana metropolitan area. San Diego's main economic engines are military and defense-related activities, tourism, international trade, and manufacturing. The presence of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), with the affiliated UCSD Medical Center, has helped make the area a center of research in biotechnology.
Seaport Village is a waterfront shopping and dining complex adjacent to San Diego Bay in downtown San Diego, California. It is located at 849 West Harbor Drive, at the intersection of Harbor Drive and Kettner.
It houses more than 70 shops, galleries, and eateries on 90,000 square feet (8,000 m2) of waterfront property. The Village contains several freestanding buildings in an assortment of architectural styles, from Victorian to traditional Mexican. It is designed to be a car-free environment, with four miles (6 km) of winding paths rather than streets connecting the various buildings. It is located in walking distance from the San Diego Convention Center and the cruise ship terminal. It is currently under redevelopment planning, with construction to begin approximately 2025. It will remain operational until construction begins, according to the Port District.

I used to live downtown and I really appreciated all the different neighborhoods and things to do within a short walking distance, combined with the lack of gigantic skyscrapers. The tallest buildings are really only around 30 levels or so. The charm of the city is so much calmer, laid back, and cleaner than places like Los Angeles or San Fran. Walking along the water in Seaport Village with a morning coffee in hand was a pleasure!

San Diego is a cool place. Do it, I did it. I was in NJ and I think this will be my 7th year in CA. I live in Venice Beach now, it's a difficult one to move to because of the price and how little available leases there are but San Diego is by far affordable for how beautiful and nice people are.

It's crazy how much nicer looking San Diego is than LA but young and trendy people still flock to LA anyway. All that matters is the "LA" brand so they can show off to their old peers back home and feel more special themselves just because they live in LA. FOMO is a big part of it too but that would change if San Diego became a more popular place for young people, see Austin, Portland, and Denver. 30 years ago, those cities were not considered particularly cool like they are now. Of course the downside to more people moving to SD is pushing the cost of living up but a lot of the blame for that should be directed at those in power, not almost entirely on people who move to a place. I also like there aren't as many palm trees even though those are iconic for LA, they provide very little shade and when there isn't enough rain, start looking brown. SD seems to have a lot more actual trees lining its sidewalks.
