I Flew in Business Class... on a CRJ?

- The CRJ-900 is a regional airliner that seats around 76 people, and Jazz Aviation operates 35 of these on behalf of Air Canada Express. What’s kind of noteworthy though is that they actually offer a proper domestic Business Class on these planes, with 12 seats in the first four rows.
So, I fell victim to a compelling check-in upgrade price once again, and flew in Business Class on a CRJ!

I think the seating configuration has more to do with pilot scope clauses, rather than the routes being 'premium heavy'.
Exactly this. It's why Jazz had it's own special variant of the CRJ - the 705 - which basically was a 900 with a lower certified capacity to fit with scope clause.
@@plhought Pilot scope clause? What does it define? TNX
@@marcusdamberger Regional Airlines flying under larger airline's "brand" are typically limited by a labour agreement with the "mainline" airline's pilots to only fly aircraft types limited to a certain certified passenger number or gross weight.
The intention of this is to prevent the regional airline from operating routes that could jeopordize the mainline airline operating them.
One notable example of this is Swiss Airlines, which when they recieved 777s, the main airline pilots refused to operate them without significant increases in pay - so the parent Swiss company gave the 77 aircraft to the regional subsidery to operate, which eventually resulted in the dissolution of the original mainline pilot group and company - with the regional subsidery becoming the only surviving company.
There’s something that feels pretty meta about watching a video on the Air Canada CRJ900 business class while siting in an Air Canada CRJ900 in business class
I am watching this at Amsterdam airport, just heading to Calgary got a long layover
Lol
This needs more likes
Im watching this on my bed.
I just watched an a220 biz class review while in the same seat, was interesting to see my own seat explained to me with the same catering options
the fact you managed to shoot a whole video AND eat that whole meal AND still capture the descent is way more impressive than anything AC has done
Gimli glider
Am I joke to you?
Jazz FA here, I'm glad you enjoyed the flight. So we have essentially 4 "flavors" of CRJ900s in the fleet.
Tails 701-716 are the original CRJ705s that were redesigned CRJ900s, equipped with the Legacy Thales IFE and Wifi
Tails 717-721 (which is the type you were on) were new delivery CRJ900s equipped with the Next Generation cabin (larger aft lav, slightly larger galley, accent and more dimmable lighting) has the Legacy Thales IFE and Wifi.
Tails 722-730 are new build CRJ900s with the Atmosphere cabin that we took delivery right at the beginning of COVID. I'm a giant fan of the Atmosphere cabin, both as a crew member and passenger. Substantially bigger overhead bins, especially in J. Much better galley layout, nicer lavs, mood lighting, 110v outlets at every row. My only complaint with them is they're not equipped with WiFi or IFE and Jazz hasn't been clear if they're getting them.
Then there's....the ugly ducklings that are the tails in the 780s. These are NextGen cabin 900s originally delivered to Sky West in the US, that we acquired in 2018 if my memory serves me. These cabins are a little beat up and could use some TLC. Has WiFi but no IFE.
Fleet wide Atmosphere upgrade has been paid for along with IFEs off of the A220.
*Retired F16 fighter pilot and Instructor 30 years RCAF here, and I just wanted to say I like you.*
_Which is unusual... because most FAs on Jazz are fat man hating bitchy menstruating cunts lol_
As 53 year old Quebecois, Canadian… you make the best videos. I was in my life lucky to fly a Quebecair FokkerF-28, 737’s , DC-9, CP AIR DC-8, business class on AC L1011, DC-10, 737’s and KLM 1 class upstairs on a 747-400, and as a young kid a Wardair 747 to Hawaii… And I forgot the bumpy ride on a DASH-8-400 and also Airbus A320, A319…. If I had the money…. I would buy a Boeing 747-400 engine and display it in my living room 😊. I love everything about commercial airplanes….. Never got interested in military airplanes….. Continue your great work…..
Weird to see AC running a plane into my hometown that isn’t either a “full sized” airliner or a Dash 8. Hope you enjoyed Kelowna!
If you are above six feet tall it is physically impossible to not feel uncomfortable using the onboard lavatory.
I flew business class onboard an AC CRJ-900 back in 2018 from YVR-SEA and I was surprised that I got served a meal on a 30 minute flight. On another note, great video!
I love this plane. I flew LA to PHX with Delta. The young Captain was more than happy to thank everyone personally for flying with them ✈👌
Love the CRJ-900. Thanks for sharing Alex!
Great report, got to see what the AC CRJ900 is like. I was scheduled on one (and looking forward to it) a few weeks ago YYZ-AUS, but AC subbed a -175. The 175 was OLD, and in need of upgrade badly. In F the seat in front of me was broken (kinda leaning back and to the right), IFE did not work, power outlet hard to keep connected, WIFI was out ,only one bathroom (the F one) worked and overall a very tired looking plane. On the plus side, at least it ran (a little over an hour late), as there were many cancelled flight that morning from YYZ including LGA/PHL/ORD/ATL and a few others, so theres that! Otherwise, the meal was fine and they only lost one of our bags that took 4 days to get back! Overall not a great experience, howver the A220 YHZ-YYZ was fine.
Just flew the AC Express CRJ from Denver up to Vancouver on Tuesday, also in seat 4A, and was surprised to find it decked out with a new cabin interior (C-FJFZ)! Didn't know any of the CRJs were getting updated cabins, but after chatting with the flight attendant it sounds like its only for the new deliveries and not retrofits. Great video!
I love your in depth information and real time take offs and landings. Great job!!!
One of my first domestic business flights from from Saskatoon to Vancouver on just such a plane. I was really impressed with the pitch, the comfortable ride and the nice service. Having flown sectors in first on AC's 175's it's pretty hard to say which is better, but that flight sure stuck in my mind as a good one. Now, put a lie-flat seat on the CRJ and you're styling!
About 22 years ago & through its early years, the CRJ900 was a 90 seat aircraft that several US carriers ordered for their regional partners. I'm surprised, with all your travels, you thought it odd the CRJ 900 had a first/business class because our US carriers have had the cabin for quite a few year now. Most of the CRJ700 have a mixed cabin too (UA F-6 Y+-16 & Y-48; DL F-9 Y+-16 & Y44 as 2 examples). A few years ago, UA had a CRJ 500 developed just for their use. It's a CRJ700 with only 50 seats total ( F-10, Y+-20, Y-20).
Wow...that's a decent breakfast for such a short flight !!!
wow what an scenic approach!
Thank you for sharing your trip... Nice..
You have the best airplane reviews great video keep up the great work.
We flew business class YYT to YUL in April 2019. Very enjoyable flight on a very quiet plane with the smoothest landing we have ever experienced.
Nice capture of Bow River and YBW. Looks like springtime in Kelowna. Those hills dry up in the summer.
Well done Alex and I too am surprised that on such a short flight only 39 minutes in total length that you were able to get a full course breakfast ! kudos dude!
Great vid as always. Would love to hear the stories of those old airframes at 9:38.
Great Video Just 2 Weeks ago I was Planespotting at Kelowna Airport
Ahhhh Business Class..In 2006 on one of my 3 return visits to Vietnam ( Served in Vietnam Dec 1907-71 ) flying from Bangkok to Saigon via Lufthansa on a 747-400 I requested a seat in the last row 2 by 2 seating while checking in I was upgraded to Business Class ( no charge ) I must have had the right attitude lol...1.5 hrs flight was great....
Former Crew Chief on UH-!C Huey Gunships...
Cheers from San Francisco
Thanks for the video I really want you to film another spotting video at Pearson if you have time
Great job! 👍 BTW, took ur advice about mount for filming, worked great YYZ-YVR and on Harbour Air’s panoramic flight! Now just need to learn editing 😳🤪🤷♂️ but will have to wait till UK then the Canary Islands trip is done. Doing AC J to LHR this Tuesday 🥳.
Very nice!
Excellent vidro
Springbank! 5:56 😍
Vernon CYVK (8:39) has an excellent food truck in the summer.
I, admittedly, hate the CRJs but this product actually looks pretty good, And the IFE screens are surprising on an aircraft that flys short routes. great review. Thanks!
Great video
Nice! I wish that WestJet had followed air Canada in getting some crj's. Love your channel! #avgeek #canadianaviation
I will be flying this exact route and flight on September 20th heading back to Vancouver from Regina
As someone who is 6'5, I feel that pain trying to duck, walk and turn into a CRJ. Just started following your channel. Keep up the great work!
Never been on a CRJ but at 5'7 I won't have that much trouble navigating to my seat. Looks like a nice and cozy aircraft.
For anyone wondering, as of July 2022, no CleanCare+ kits were handed out on either of my AC flights.
Many years ago - United used a few of these in the US. Am unsure if it was a sub-contractor or not. I really enjoyed the space on a morning flight from Harrisburg, PA to Washington DC.
Then - I never saw a CRJ in service again…
Some time you should come to the maratimes, like Halifax
Nice vid!
I recently flew with a CRJ900 a few weeks ago in Business Class from Winnipeg to Calgary. Unfortunately, I got the unlucky plane as in no IFE. But it was a nice experience.
It's worth the extra money just for the single seat! Not a bad upgrade at all, you did well.
My original booking from YVR to SAN had these (we booked business as well) but I guess demand for that route picked up, so they switched it to an Airbus
The new atmosphere cabin ones don't have IFE
Awesome 👍
Your voice so gives me aviation vibes!
Plan another trip to YLW and do us a video on:
a) those planes to the southeast of the runway,
b) the brand new KF Aerospace Centre for Excellence, which is a building literally shaped like an airplane. Opened today!
Been flying the AC CRJ-900 between YEG/YYC and YZF lately... They're pretty quick!
I've had the "seriously good legroom" seat!
when you where talking about seating in ecomany I was siting in the very last seat on the plane right next to the engines the engines where not that loud though.
I think delta kind of had something going with their crjs. Me being a 6'2 traveler from a regional airport, they were all that flew at my airport (plus the dash 8) pre pandemic. I genuinely didn't mind flying on them, and am almost sad that they phased them out.
7:50 view 😍
Beautiful video ❤❤
@AlexPraglowskiAviation what are your thoughts on the sounds of the CF-34 engines? They are some of my favorite sounds personally, having flown onboard United’s CRJ-550
Kelowna look a bit like Switzerland but in XL as North America goes anyways x)
finally a flight review
During the same month I drove from NE Montana to Regina to catch a flight to Quebec City via Calgary in Business Class. I was shocked that I was served a meal on the short hop from Regina to Calgary. Won’t see that in the US.
Sweet worked as a ramp agent at YLW
On the 700 and 900, business class is common and one of the reason airlines asked RIP Bombardier for the stretched versions. United even got its custom model, the 500 which is a 700 with lower capacity limit on paper which lowers landing costs and cabin crew requirements.
Getting a new entertainment system on an old plane would require entertainment maker to certify its equipnent for that plane. If AC were to order a new one, it woudl be expected to renew the whole 35 aircraft with new system (and not sure that would be large enough order to warrant certification costs). Only getting new entertainmenrt for the last couple of -900s it got wouuld make no sense. (on board server woudl also have to fit on a CRJ)
It isn,t clear how much longer the Mitsibishi CRJs will continue flying, and how many airlines have entertainment system for the J class on them. But it is a fixed market as plane no longer manufactured.
Saw a wicked deal when booking a trip to iad from yyc, and booked me a nice business class seat for less than what i payed for my return flight in economy 🤣 the crj is my yyz to iad leg, and was really excited to see the business class
I flew AC from YYC-YXE-YYC in the Summer of 2022 and was not impressed at all. In spite of flying into YYC in UA First Class, AC wouldn't let me upgrade. On the return, same thing and they charged me for my bag! The last row of the CRJ 900 is terrible for its lack of space. (The same on US carriers too, that is not the fault of AC). I could smell the hot food all the way in the back. But on one leg we didn't get any service in spite of sitting cheek to cheek with the FA on her jumpseat.
nice trip i like crj
Hmm. Sounds similar to the "CRJ-550" that United has been putting together. The -550 are just -700s that are converted to 50 seat configuration with all new interiors.
Nice to see a breakfast option on Air Canada that isn't an omelet!
I flew on one recently. I swear the entertainment system was working via a 1992 dial up modem
When will you review long haul offering from Calgary on European airlines, I would really like to see a KLM, Eurowing, Or Swiss air
The fact that air canada provides ife screens on regional jets
How long was the flight? And how much was the ticket?
I imagine another reason this has Business class is because Jazz operates these planes on an insane direct route between Montreal and RDU, which takes about 4 hours. Thats also probably whhy they have inflight entertainment and such.
so im tired of being home
and i wanna book a flight out of CYUL to literally anywhere domestically
any suggestions for a sameday round trip extra cheap flight lol?
Youre in Kelowna
that looks more like a premium economy seat
Brilliant AC Jazz. wow 30 min flt.
The bins above 4A are comically small. It would be great if they have a "gate valet" like for Dash 8s.
Jazz FA here....SkyCheck has been trialed on the CRJ900 and the Q400 a number of times, and has always been a failure. Basically without SkyCheck we do take the occasional delay due to cabin baggage. With SkyCheck everything was delayed. The problem was mainly returning the bags on arrival, too many bags that needed to be brought up the jetway....
Oh, also, the small bins on the A-side tend to be more helpful for cabin crew to store stuff like blankets, pillows, etc. Thusly freeing up the proper bins for baggage.
@@sarahoutamonbuilds as a ramper for a major us airline I wish we could be like you all and get rid of the claim at gate. We hate it. Like I get the reasoning to an extent but when your on a minimum ground time turn its rough.
@@jmcmillen19 there's place for it on aircraft like the classic Dash 8s/CRJ200s due to their very limited cabin storage, and being under 50 seats, But it doesn't make sense on larger aircraft where you could end up with 40+ peices of SkyCheck/Valet (or whatever a particular airline calls it)
It’s so quiet!!
Had a very comfy flight on it last week in economy from YYC to YWG. Sucks that the windows were awkwardly positioned relative to the seats tho.
7:22 HA!
طائرة رائعة
Went straight from the f1 Belgian Grand Prix to a new AP trip report. Not bad
What Cam?
That IFE looks like the ones Delta put in their 757s from 1999 😂
It's the original Thales IFE that was rolled out with Project XM in the mid-2000s. Currently still installed on CRJ900s, E175s, and 319/320/321. It's unknown if these will be updated to the newer IFE system currently equipped on the 220/Max/777/787
Just did a 2hr flight Montreal to Detroit in business and all they offered was a 'continental breakfast'. Power port didn't work either. I paid cash for that fare too, woops.
Lucky you are in Business, because the economy seats are terrible, especially on a longer flight, flew to Houston on one of these and my back was sore from that flight. I avoid these planes when possible.
flew only 4 times in my life!
only knly know of 1984 -ish airplanes!
Wish i could bring my family a of 3 kids and a wife(of course) in BC
were i first landed (of wath i am aware)
I like AC older entertainment system, audio program
I doubt that anything would be served on a 30 min flight in the US, maybe first class might get a drink but that would be it!!!!
Kool
No one gonna talk about that ryanair type landing?
Better then embraer
Yeah the IFE was a letdown, but the meal looked pretty delish. Not bad for a 1 hr flight!
- Red
CRJ to YLW is strictly for fleet availability. Q400 will take over again in the fall.
Coke for breakfast? 😅
we did that but we were not really impressed....
Ok today i pick my dad at the Airport up
I like French but I can't understand why they'd do french PA's on a flight between two English-only cities
Kelowna you say?
What's the point?
That gooey looking brown stuff was hashed browns on your plate?? Yeeesh, those are the worst looking hashed browns I've ever seen!
I got put on one of those CRJ 50 seaters they converted to dual class. It was a 3 hour flight. We had one flight attendant. It was horrible.
Wwwaaayyy off topic, here, but...
#trudeaumustgo ...Oops. Did I say that out loud?
Nicely done Alex! I flew into YLW a bit ago, from Toronto on a 737 MAX. The scenery was amazing!
Trip report video: czcams.com/video/wnTrIL8Citk/video.html
No lie-flat seats? Really? The worst business class ever🤬🤬🤬🤬🖕🖕🖕🖕
It is literally a crj, of course it doesn’t have lay-flat seats.
What a piece of junk
No wonder Bombardier had to sell to Alstom
