- In today's Japan Walking Tour series, join me on a sunset walk at Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter in Okayama!
Kurashiki (倉敷) is located in Okayama Prefecture, not far from the capital city of Okayama.
Kurashiki has a preserved canal area dating back to the Edo period (1603-1867), when the city served as an important rice distribution center. In fact, the name "Kurashiki" can roughly translate as "the town of warehouses" for rice warehouses.
Many of Kurashiki's former warehouses have been converted into museums, shops and cafes. Ohara Museum is the most impressive of Kurashiki's museums, displaying a large collection of works by famous Western artists.
This canal area is a 10-minute walk from Kurashiki Station. You can enjoy a nice peaceful walk and feel like you are in historical Japan.

One of my favorites among the places I've visited in Japan. There are a lot more historical buildings in the neighborhood between the canal and Achi Shrine, which is also a beautiful area. I hope you were able to do some more exploring while you were there.
