  • I like Trails. Trails is getting a new game today. This game has had like four titles, so I decided instead of just talking about that one to talk about every title for over a dozen games in the series. I may have a problem. Please enjoy both this video and Daybreak, I have it on good authority that it's Peak no Kiseki.

    Reverie:
    a state of dreamy meditation or fanciful musing:
    lost in reverie.
    a daydream.
    a fantastic, visionary, or impractical idea:
    reveries that will never come to fruition.
    Music. an instrumental composition of a vague and dreamy character.
    ;)

    NISA deserves a lot of the criticism thrown at them, but it is a bit one sided to complain about them dropping “Crimson Sin” from Daybreak 2 while not mentioning that Falcom also dropped the subtitle from their own in-house upcoming Switch port of Kuro 2. You can go watch trailers for the original release of Kuro 2 compared to new trailers for the Switch port and see and hear that the subtitle is just not there anymore.

      Looks like they literally replaced the Crimson Sin subtitle with the subtitle “for Nintendo Switch” cuz from what I’m seeing that’s literally on the box now lol. Imma still give NISA shit for it, imma just call Falcom dumb for naming the game Kuro no Kiseki 2: for Nintendo Switch”

    This video is super interesting but I think since you mentioned the "Sora" 空 kanji being the name of the space element in game. You could have also said (maybe you didnt notice, but since you know your japanese, i doubt it) that in the cold steel games, when you land a critical, the kanji that appears in the background is the same "sen" 閃 as in the title of the games. I just thought that was a very coold detail the first time I noticed and hoped to see it in this video, and since you didnt mention it, i thought it was a good idea. Really good and interesting video from a translation and japanese study perspective. Thanks.

    To be fair with Trails into Reverie, they probably wanted to avoid words like Origin, Beginning, and Creation in the title of arguably the worst starting point in the series for marketing reasons and avoiding confusion. Imagine having a conversation where a person goes “Hey, can I start with Trails of the Beginning?” and you tell them no and that it is actually an epilogue game. If I was told that, I might lose all interest in getting into the series.

  • @ravus9935
    @ravus9935 Před 23 dny +9

    "The End of Saga" is both absolute Engrish and simply untrue. CSIV is far from the last game in the series, and it isn't even the last game set in Erebonia. Keeping "End of Saga" or some variation is completely redundant when you have Reverie up next.

    • @Gaht64
      @Gaht64 Před 23 dny +4

      "Saga" doesn't necessarily mean a series' entire story. It can also mean the end of a part and can be used in tandem with "arc". In that sense, "End of Saga" DOES makes sense for CS4 since its essentially the end of the first half(?) of the series' plotline with Reverie/Hajimari being the transition into the second and also being a epilogue to said first half
      That being said, I don't think it being left out of the English release is _that_ big of an issue since you're still told its the 4th CS game, but it is a lil unfortunate

    • @fes8807
      @fes8807 Před 22 dny

      My interpretation was that "End of Saga" referred to the Cold Steel saga which, in a sense, included 2 arcs: Eastern Erebonia and Western Erebonia.

    Just also want to point out the Boundless Trails part in Nayuta's localized title is also a reference to Towa's ultimate weapon in Cold Steel 2/Reverie, which I think is a neat nod given both Towa and Nayuta share the same last name. Boundless Trails I think was also coined as a tentative title by one of the former Xseed staff way back when so Nisa definitely did a bit of research when it came to the name!
    Also, I want to just chime in on the name for Reverie. I don't think they went with that name just because "lol Reverie Corridor is a thing, slap it and ship it boys!" The word Reverie itself means "a state of being pleasantly lost in one's thoughts; a daydream" and what is the Corridor's inclusion in the game if not just a dream like state. I personally think it's a fitting thematic translation for the game, and does pair nicely Daybreak following it

    • @NoonDragoon
      @NoonDragoon Před 22 dny +1

      My own personal read was that “Reverie” referred to the dream like scenario of getting to have 15 years worth of characters together in a singular game interacting and working with each other. The game is a literal dream come true for long time fans. I think you’d have to be very cynical to disregard the title they chose to go with as having no thought behind it.

    Regarding Kai's title, it's important to know, that Kuro's kanji usual sound is Rei, which together with kai means Reikai (霊界). The first Kanji is obviously different, but reikai means Spirit World. It could also mean Dark World togethere if we take the Kuro=Black name into consideration.
    Also, akatsuki could also mean Red Moon if we go with 2 homonim Kanjis.
    Finally, the Kiseki part of the title was referenced on a previous Legend of Heroes game. Legend of Heroes III: White Witch has a chapter called 巡礼者の軌跡 (Junreisha no Kiseki) which could be translated as Trails of the Pilgrims. This is probably the most important chapter on Legend of Heroes III since it's the one which explains the background around the White Witch. Legend of Heroes III is also a very important game for Kondo, and the White Witch is his favorite character on that game.

    No wonder the Chinese localization has an easier time, to the point that the Chinese/Korean localization release for Kai no Kiseki is on the same day as the Japanese release.
    The Kiseki titles doesn't require changes in Chinese, they just reused the Kanji, as it should. Cause even the Chinese knows the differences between their language and Japanese. And most will not be confused by the title of Kuro no Kiseki, which uses the same Kanji for Rean's name in Chinese, which is 黎恩.
    Yeah you can tell I pick CLE's localization rather than NISA, cause at least they don't screw with the already English titles/terms.

      Languages like Chinese, Korean, that follow the Japanese script are fine.
      And have you watched the video? Already English terms/titles in the game like "Sword Maiden" or "Cross Stories" are changed in the NISA localizations for no reasons.
      In the CLE Chinese/Korean Localizations, they directly translate those English titles/terms, or not change them at all and just use them directly in English.

      @@Addition2 it works in Korean and Chinese because those languages are much similar to Japanese then English or any Latin based language for that matter.
      If the titles were just straight up in Japanese in the west, most people would not be able to read it, understand it, or even remember it, because they don’t know Japanese so the words are completely meaningless to them. That’s not great if you want trails to still exist in the west.

      If the game titles were always in Japanese, you would have to have a separate thing telling people how to pronounce it, since you can’t tell it’s supposed to be pronounced “Kiseki”from just looking at the Japanese word, at that point you may as well just make it romanji, and if it’s going to be romanji you might as well just make a English title.
