  • In this video I break down what to do when an opponent catches your kick in Muay Thai.
When someone catches your kick in Muay Thai, the worst thing you can do is panic. Fortunately there are specific skills you can learn and practice so that you will always react in calm skilful way when someone catches your kick.
When you're doing Muay Thai training at the gym or at home, you must find time to practice these skills, whether it's just drilling it with a partner or looking for opportunities during sparring because skills like these need to happen in an instant, if you hesitate even for a second, you might get swept
So, The first and easiest way to deal with people catching your kicks is to throw punches on the catching side. And if your opponent keeps catching the kick every time you throw it, you can actually throw the kick in anticipation that you will be able to land that punch once he drops that hand
One thing to think about is the further away he is from you, the better it is for you. It puts you at a better range to land your counter punches and it puts him at a range where it's hard for him to sweep.
The second way of dealing with an opponent catching your kick is when he catches it but closes that distance and goes in for a sweep. What you want to do when your opponent gets your leg and has you in this situation is to grab a hold of his neck to give you that support, then bring your foot around so that your shin is now in his stomach. This is a great defensive position and will allow you to easily break out of his grip
The third way is a bit more risky but it can work out well if you practice it enough. Is to jump and to get all of your weight above his arm that is holding your leg. This is going to make it easier for you to get out of the hold.

Ah. This is why my trainer has me step to the right as I catch and not hold the leg in the air, but pull it back quickly then get hands up so my opponent falls into me while I push my weight forward to him with hook, cross and/ or elbow while guarding.
His right to my left is easier to defend ( especially since I have a right foot injury unrelated to Muay Thai).
Thanks for this tip for when my leg gets caught..

Thanks, I was finding something like this. I do karate. Just started. This is one of the main problems I face. But I think now I definitely can grab some points.

what about kicking with the other leg? I don't know combat sports rules, but it seems like if someone has your foot, you control the distance by the bend in your caught knee. What if you committed to another kick aiming for the side of their head? You would be committing to landing on the ground, but if you made contact, it seems like it would be lights out? I hope that makes sense...
