The thing I love most about Moffat's writing is that he was the first writer in "New Who" to actually explore the possibilities of time travel. It manifests as little things like being able to have a real time conversation with someone 40 years in the future, or how River was able to leave a message for the Doctor in the distant past knowing that he'd eventually stumble upon it in the future and come rescue her.
I watched this episode so many times before I realized that the pirate captain is Henry Avery, a real pirate who mysteriously disappeared in the 1690s. I never caught his name until I rewatched series 6 again a few months ago.
Yes, he raided the Moghul emperor's treasure ship, as also mentioned in the episode: it was the most successful pirate haul of all time, about £1.4bn in todays money . As a result, he was the subject of the first ever world-wide manhunt, but was never caught.
What I find really interesting is that Every was from Devon. This makes him one of the few pirates who would actually have spoken with the west country `pirate` accent popularised by Hollywood. Here though, Hugh Bonneville just straight up plays him as posh voiced Lord Downton on a boat.
I always find it amusing that in an episode where medical consent is explicitly mentioned, the Doctor is performing a pregnancy scan on Amy without her knowledge!
Just an FYI ladies but I'm a Brit and I live in a small town in West Yorkshire called Mirfield. It happens to be the birthplace of one Sir Patrick Stewart. Jodie Whittaker comes from ten miles up the road too. How's that for linkage?
Greetings Gallifrey Gals :) love watching your DW reaction vids. I saw the "spoondriver" on this video, which I didn't know existed lol, just ordered one :D Thanks lol
This is the first video I've watched of you guys on release since the new channel started (just binged watched all of your reactions last week) so can't wait for this to be what I look forward to every Friday for the next wee while :)
This might be the weakest episode of the series and a bit early for a filler type episode, but I like it. It's meant to be a light, fun episode after the two part opener. Gives the audience a chance to catch their breath before we go up the gears again. This episode is needed because of the way the series is structured. Next episode though oh can't wait for that one.
The thumbnail for this episode pretty accurately sums up the ladies this season. Katrina is distraught and Paula is uninterested (at the very least dispassionate).
A pirate with a steering wheel coming out of his zipper walked into a bar. The Bartender said, “Hey Pirate, did you know you have a steering wheel coming out of your zipper?” The Pirate said, “ Arrrrrrrrr, it’s driving me nuts!” I’m so happy you like this story. It is a fun little adventure.
I don't get why this episode is a lower rated one. I love this episode. It's just a fun episode. There's mystery, there's adventure, there's danger. It even had some sweet moments between Amy and Rory. It was a fun side adventure sort of episode where you could just sit back and enjoy it without having to think too hard.
I've been watching Babylon 5 recently and I know that the Centauri have a favorite food they call "spoo". I could have sworn that Katrina called her eating implement a "sonic spoo-driver!" 😂

@@josefschiltz2192 You're right that no one has reacted to B5. Someone should. It was a great show with fantastic characters. A couple of characters tried spoo on the show. I was wondering that myself. The three stories you mention certainly include pirates. But Katrina mentioned a Hartnell story. That could be The Smugglers, which does include a pirate crew in the characters as well as a smuggling gang. So that would make five stories?
Girls, without spoilers, I’m going to say that next episode, one of your constant (yet still loving) criticisms of the Doctor is going to finally be addressed. Listen out for it, many just pass it off without realising the significance.
its ok its just coming off a run with episodes as great as the pandorica opens, the big bang, a christmas carol, the impossible astronaut, day of the moon it makes it look a bit weaker. also had vincent and the doctor two before that run started. its pretty much average doctor who episode quality maybe a bit below really. if it was in like series 2 or 3 it would have been criticised by general fans less.

For an episode about the Doctor meeting pirates and a siren, I find this episode to be strangely bland. I don't think there's anything particularly bad about this episode, but there's nothing particularly noteworthy either. Amy getting in on the pirate action is a lot of fun, and I do get a kick out of Arthur Darvill's almost-drunk performance when Rory is under the siren's charm. Hugh Bonneville is good as Captain Avery, and there's some atmospheric scenes, but that's about it for this episode. The supporting cast aren't very interesting, the emotional scenes don't really land, the reveal of all the problems being a result of malfunctioning alien tech feels kind of old at this point (after The Empty Child, The Girl in the Fireplace and The Lodger all did this), even Matt Smith didn't seem overly invested in this one. It's probably a result of coming after such a big epic two-part opening, as well as being followed by what is one of New Who's greatest episodes, but I always end up forgetting this episode exists when I go and look back over series 6
