    I've seen a lot of people complaining about the "romance" between the two main characters but I really wouldn't call it a romance, it's an unrequited crush if anything, he's never shown to have any romantic interest in her but they're shown to really care about each other anyways

      I agree, I was surprised that so many people viewed that as a romance. There was very little focus on that than I would have thought from certain reviews. They don't even kiss in the movie.

      I think it's left fairly open ended. You can definitely see him being interested in her for sure but it's not a super concrete romance. I think people were *expecting* romance to be the center of the film because of Shinkai's previous work and instead it's just one aspect of many.

      Ofcourse they are in love with each other but the story don't let them to get on unimportant things, that is really good and make it a family movie. If you want to see romance you better watch some blue film or kinda something.

    I managed to watch this movie completely blind. It was a pleasant surprise when I found out it’s about earthquakes. This movie in a sense was therapeutic. you see I’m Turkish, and as you probably heard we had a major one last February. I cried my eyes out when I saw the scene with the memories of people in the abandoned places. I’m a huge fan of Shinkai’s emotional realism and soft-world building. While watching I felt the exact same emotions I felt standing in the hollow squares after the rubble was all lifted up. Suzume is certainly a masterpiece ❤

    Suzume was a masterpiece!
    I loved the story, the characters, its themes, and the animation and soundtrack were as outstanding as you would expect from a Makoto Shinkai movie.
    I personally really liked how the movie didn't focus that much on the romance between the two leads like Shinkai's previous films, and it rather focused on the journey and development of the MC, Suzume. That was really nice.

    So I went to see Suzume a second time tonight (wanted my wife to have a chance to see it too), and thoroughly enjoyed it again. This time it was on a much larger screen at the Toho Cinemas in Kabukicho, and I was able to notice a lot more of the CG used for certain parts of the animation (the aforementioned crowd scenes, Souta's key, etc.). Even if it was noticiable, it was at least used more sparingly/artistically than what we've seen in other anime features over the past decade or so.
    Also picked up on some more Ghibli-inspired scenes. Really, this movie feels like the perfect amount of Ghibli-inspiration for Shinkai, much like Wolf Children felt for Hosoda. Just enough for some callbacks and occasional added atmosphere (unlike Children Who Chase Lost Voices, which really went overboard in that department).

    Saw this last night in a very quiet cinema (and by that I mean empty because the screen next door had some extremely loud Hindi film which did kind of ruin some of the quieter scenes).
    I saw the English version and had seen one of the trailers a lot prior, they did a decent job of not showing much in that specific trailer. I had no idea the story was such a journey across Japan.
    Very much enjoyed the film and it's the small, quieter moments that got me. For example, the use of a Fish eye style lens for an interior shot... I saw that and was just like... Whoa!

    I saw suzume in the theater just a week ago. Those concerns about rural-urban divide in Japan was exactly what i talked about after the movie. During the movie, i was trying my hardest to understand kami against just a simple plot device, which it eventually delivered on - in this regard I might lack cultural context. I also became very aware during the film of the many motifs that Shinkai reuses, like "crowd wondering about what's going on", and internet virality (like in weathering with you), not to mention, girl falling through the sky...

    I think that tendency to not be (or be a LOT less) political than Miyazaki and Takahata is what holds back the likes of Hosoda and Shinkai from reaching their level. I feel like when Miyazaki gives advice like putting your whole heart in something you're working on, the passionate political stakes are part of that, and holding back or hesitating to decide how one feels about the politics around something is exactly not putting your whole heart in it (at least not a well-examined and better understood heart).

    • @noahoskow4551
      @noahoskow4551 Před rokem +9

      I tend to agree. Miyazaki comes from an era where he and his peers were truly political - they were actively trying to change the world around them for the better. His themes continue to reflect that activism, even as his he doubts humanity's ability to stick to the right course. Hosoda and Shinkai have their themes, but very little speaks to ways in which the world or Japan could be changed for the better.

    • @doctorpringles12
      @doctorpringles12 Před rokem +2

      Imo I don’t think all of the politics depicted in Miyazaki’s works always stick the landing.
      Call me a not-passionate fan or deep-thinker or whatever, and I like Miyazaki’s works, but it’s not an automatic everytime.
      I loved Princess Mononoke, and the themes of its premise worked very well, but in something like Howl’s Moving Castle for example, I don’t think the political messages Miyazaki intended in that film were as deeply resonant as the romance-adventure vibes of that film.

      The ending was a call back to the beginning where the twist is that the young Suzume didn’t actually meet her mother in the ever-after realm at the start but instead met the older version of herself who gave the three-legged chair to her. This works because the concept of time in the ever-after realm doesn’t follow the realm of the living and thus creates a time paradox where the older suzume is able to give the young suzume the chair which is a catalyst for her and souta’s journey through the movie.

    • @arctr00perecho

      @@cooljazzftw1172 Ty. I read an explanation from Screen Rant shortly after commenting. Basically the same as what you shared. Yea it clicked when they mentioned Souta’s detail a of the Ever-After, where past, present, future all coexist. Which makes sense especially when looking at how they closed the gates/doors. Again thank you!
      Also did you notice a little bit of similarities to season 2 of Legend of Korra? I know that season of Korra is based in more Chinese lore, but the way the movie plot followed reminded me of it. Like two main gates to a another dimension are sealed from the outside but then one by one are opened. Creatures of destruction from the other dimension are released and now the gates need to be closed. They would then later be sealed from the inside the other dimension and containing the beast would prevail. The gods Raava and Vaatu from Korra were a little similar but symbolized the Chinese Yin and Yang or Japanese Inyo.
      Also thought it was interesting how with the 12 year difference from when the mom passed with the tsunami incident, it lines up perfectly with the horrific incident from March 11, 2011. The Tōhoku earthquake that led to the tsunami that hit Japan. It looked like Suzume’s journal entry dates lined up with this as well.

Its a Makoto Shinkai Film after all It might not seem like something to praise for most people and this is made by industry Professionals but I still see Animation as a great medium and artform for storytelling, and I feel people forget how much work actually goes into Hand-drawn Animation and the Background artwork most of the time. It was already like this in previous Shinkai works like Your Name and Weathering with You. B ut it just keeps getting better and better. The Animation was the first thing I picked up on when watching this. there was a few of these amaxingly directed shotsd in the intro and the sequence when the chair/Souta was chasing the Cat/Daijin where they maticulously animted the birds and the surrounding scenery. tamaki having 12 years of her life gone to raise suzume

    • @toonhub3216
      @toonhub3216 Před rokem +9

      I wouldn’t really say that Tenki no ko’s plot is childish, selfish in a way sure but it is justified. In a world where a 14 year old girl has to pose as 18 to find work and support her little brother so that they won’t be separated, a world where guns can just be found in the trash, why is it fair that a young girl has to be sacrificed to stop the constant rain? Selfless acts of sacrifice are impactful but the opposite is also equally relevant, where you can’t help others if you don’t help yourself first. The main challenge of the film is an exaggeration of climate change essentially and I think the message being conveyed is that it’s everyone’s responsibility to combat climate change thus why the Suga and Mitsuha’s grandmother tell Hodoka that it isn’t his fault. I guess I just wanted to say that these films might be opposites but it doesn’t mean either is wrong.

    @doctorpringles12 Před rokem +10

    Suzume was the first Shinkai film I felt was a true masterpiece he produced for once.
    Weathering With You stumbled by the lack of more insight to the background of the male lead to allow me to be able to actually sympathize more with his personal stakes (and the fact his parents/family had literally like zero presence in the overall film).
    Your Name’s fairly obvious rushed development/production is clearly shown when, for being framed as a romance film, the film didn’t do the best job in its execution of the romance of the two leads when it felt rushed in the middle, and cluttered execution of showcasing the growth of the two leads’ relationship have me finding difficulty in believing the two actually fell in love.
    Suzume actually appropriately felt like it accomplished everything it needed to that didn’t have me asking anything about the characters by the end, and gave me a fulfilling and satisfying package of an experience that has me understanding everything by the end.
    And I think its Two Hour runtime helped for Shinkai to pour and inject everything he possibly could for the film and made it all work in the end.
    (I feel like the only one on the boat of thinking Your Name was an overrated success)

    • @KiraAotsuki
      @KiraAotsuki Před rokem +1

      I honestly disagree for the most part. The point of Your Name's romance is both characters are living each others lives, growing closer through the many bonds shared among their friends and family, also they have supposedly weeks if not months of time interacting through it.
      LIGHT SPOILERS (adding this just in case after I realized i may have said too much, and edited to avoid more major ones)
      Suzume and Souta know eachother for like less than a week.
      In regards to Weathering with You, i agree there, it stumbled by not really delving into the boys motivation for leaving home, leaving him feeling rather undeveloped. But I could say the same thing about Souta. We know 2 things about him. That's about it, they barely even explain how his duty came to be. Maybe if I was native Japanese and understood the mythology more it would make more sense but.. He just kinda exists to inform Suzume about the doors.
      That said I am glad you really liked Suzume, I just got out of the theater and was looking for anything discussing it. It just... didn't speak to me like i wanted it to i guess.

      @@KiraAotsuki the romance felt kind of rushed in Your Name, as it didn’t do an effective job conveying to me the spark that’s supposed to have me care about the supposed romance the two had, and I think it had to do with the montage switching part of their lives that didn’t do a best job in showcasing effectively the impact the two had on each other besides the fact of their random switching.
      I think a little more time invested to slowly flesh out the interesting parts of the switching to showcase the slow subtle signs of their relationship growth would’ve been nice, even with the scenario given (since communication and interaction, the KEY to effectively showcase how the romance actually develops, was hard to execute.)
      Romance wasn’t the goal of Suzume, and it wasn’t the first thing I thought of judging when watching it, but yeah I can understand how some would feel over it based on the film’s setting runtime, but I find it believable enough since I was invested in the singular-flowing journey and the POV of Suzume’s obvious attraction to him and the bond she has with him over time.

I’m sure every animated film has them but they get magnified and become more obvious on an IMAX screen. Lol. Second of all, I thought the film was good but not great, definitely weaker than “Weathering with You” or “Your Name”. For me, I felt the love story was a bit rushed. Also, the film never made me feel scared. I mean, it’s a film about natural disasters and trying to stop disasters from happening, but I would’ve like if the main character had a stronger arch moment where she learns whatever is happening is real and that people die. I know it’s harsh but at the end of the film, I don’t feel she changed much as a character. Disaster happening? Okay - door closed. Onto the next one. Another disaster? Okie dokie! Door closed. Oh, I don’t think we even heard the band until the end of the film. Anyway, a 6/10.

And it seems that he wasn’t even ready for how big it would get, considering he’s been asking fans to stop calling him the next Hayao Miyazaki or how fans should go and watch other great anime films.

      Glad to hear people with similar opinions to me, the story was quite simple, road trip, chasing cat, close door. There's not a lot of consequences, from which the main characters can develop from (as you said close door = no disaster, everytime). Also lot's of the side characters didn't really have any meaning, like the aunt screaming at suzume for ruining her life (just felt like a forced moment, then everything goes back to normal instantly). The love story was also rushed, and I couldn't really grasp what some of the representations and meaning of things were in the story. I also struggled to understand how the worm co-existed in the ever-after.
      I really tried to enjoy it, but aside from the shallow story and ok main characters, at least it was a nice visual experience, seeing different areas around Japan and the nice animation when closing the doors and defeating the worm. The soundtrack was pleasing, voice actors played their parts well, and I thought the sound design was good!
      I went in with no expectations, not really knowing the story and not trying to compare it to "Your Name" (haven't watched weathering with you, but will watch soon). If that helps you understand my opinion.

      @@rakuyo1611 Oh my god, you and I have virtually the same opinion about the movie. Again, like you said, there was a lack of consequences which I truly felt needed to make me believe that Suzume understood what she was actually doing. Instead, we were supposed to believe she somehow “gets it” because she’s fallen in love with a chair. Haha. And if you haven’t seen “Weathering with You”, you’re in for a treat. There is this moving moment in the film that made me bawl my tears out because it was animated so beautifully and the music was perfect. You’ll know it when you see it. Cheers!!

    • @noahoskow4551

      I think the reason I don't feel the need for additional commentary on Japan's rural depopulation is that it's such an omnipresent thing in Japan itself. We all see it when we're in the countryside; we feel it when we live in those environments. It's not something that really needs additional explanation beyond understanding the pain and dislocation associated with it. Add to that the theme of disaster in general - something the Japanese population is very familiar with - and the emotional undercurrents are pretty clear without needing for additional explication. I'd say Suzume's character arc and its conclusion give us all we need in terms of catharsis relating to the pain caused by disaster and abandonment.

However, I can't help but feel that the relationship between hoto and suzume felt underdeveloped. I couldn't care less about their partnership by the end of the movie, because it felt like they didn't have anything to connect through other than the guy being hot and having more knowledge than Suzume. Additionally, hotos backstory felt very empty. It just felt like everyone cared about each other much more passionately than would be natural.

      As for the romantic aspect of their relationship, I thinks it's left at puppy crush level because there's still a significant age gap between the two. Basically the kept it for the end, when she's a bit more adult and he comes back for her.

    I do wish western viewers would stop projecting their horribly 'current times' socio-political or woke politics onto Japanese culture in regards to age differences between potential romantic partners? It's like they totally ignore Hollywood actors and rock stars chasing jailbait (Elvis and Priscilla Presley anyone?) but then project a new puritan view on an anime with a possibility of a crush between a teenage girl and slightly older young man or between a teenage boy and high school teacher...as is shown in Shinkai's films mentioned in the video.
    Jeez...I mean no one had a conniption fit when Howls Moving Castle came out and a young woman (Sophie) gets transferred into the body of a 90 year old woman and falls in love with Howl the magician and vice versa?
    People were wise and adult enough to understand the message of that film in the early 2000's but now we exist in an age of dogma and ignorance, where most of us apparently don't even know what a woman is anymore...so we aren't fit to judge others! Not at all...LOL
    PS. So was French President Emmanuel Macron a romantic or a victim, when as a 16 year old boy he had an affair with his drama teacher Brigitte Trogneux who was 39 at the time?
    They are now married with a 24 year age gap between them and Mrs Macron said he promised her she couldn't get rid of him and that he would marry her when he was only 17 years old.
    Now before anyone says, "eww thats wrong" just imagine if you replaced the "qestionable" age gap with a "questionable" LGBTQ+ love interest or a racial love interest?
    Wouldn't everyone in the western 'modern times' mind set immediately start calling THAT a "stunning and brave" pairing?
    You see my point here, I hope...?😉
