  • This week on The Whiskey Throttle Show, we are joined by supercross and motocross champion, “The Icon” himself, David Bailey! Bailey was the epitome of style, technique, and precision riding. He also set the standard for work ethic and drive. And for that matter, he’s still the best damn color commentator that supercross has ever had.

It's been 3 years since this video hit CZcams and I"m just now seeing it. I wadded myself at Saddleback 2 in Jan 2002. My buddies contacted David and he put a video together with himself, McGrath, and Carmichael. I still have it today. I have no words for the impact it had in lifting me out of the deepest funk I've ever been in. I too was paralyzed at the same level as David so he knew exactly what I was going through. He followed up with a phone call a few days after the video was delivered to me in the hospital (BTW, it was so well done the nurses & doctors treating me all cried when they say it). We talked for a couple hours, which helped me in ways I didn't know I needed. I will be forever grateful for the time he took to do all that for me. He was and still is an Icon and shinning example of what a true "champion" is. Let's not overlook his wife. She's cut from the same cloth. 3 of 4 relationships/marriages fail after such a catastrophic event. The women leave, some with valid reason, others not so much. Gina is an example to be modeled after worldwide. Incredible people...

Met David once, he had an awful night in the Kingdome. It was a different time, my friend and I offered to help him carry his lawn chairs and other stuff back to his box van. He graciously accepted, it was obvious that he was so frustrated that night he didn't want to interact with anyone and yet he handled his disappointing evening with grace. Great respect, David is a gracious loser, a classy winner, and has proven to be an admirable human being. I wish I knew him better.

Gun fire, dope being sold, people acting crazy or whatever I could escape in my mind and look at the David Bailey poster on my wall and say I'm a race one day a be good like David. Gary designed much of the track which eventually held nationals for three years (Motomasters Park Mapleview, NY). Seeing this podcast brought tears to my eyes going through the obstacles he had to go through. Even then as young boys i could see his natural riding talents at the schools but more importantly his respectful kind nature. I knew whatever he did in life he would succeed. He's certainly accomplished more post injury than pre. I'm so glad his father shared the bible with him as that is his anchor! Great job whiskey throttle for bringing out this remarkable story!

Stretch some more metal till it shrieks, then repeat. The noise a bike makes when it lands a double short with a dead engine. Thud and stretching frame, and bottoming suspension. But this was over and over again, maybe 10 reps. I walked towards it and found it was Langston, carrying the front wheel in the air as he went through a section of stadium whoops. Just catching thetop of each whoop, about ten feet apart and five foot tall. Thud, thud, thud, etc. Lap and lap again. Impressive. It did bite his ass before days end,but wow! The crap we do when young and sure of our invincibility!

Great stories .. I know all the names of the Motocross racers .. from 1975 to 1980.. Don't know the current names very well ..
I have seen all of the guys mentioned in this Video at Red Bud.. Which was my Favorite track of all for armatures before they built the monstrous doubles and Triples ..

Johnny Marley was by far the fastest rider around at that time. I new him and rode at the same time as he did. Man that guy was fast. I would love to see what he could have done on a factory ride.

Kdub. Not really wasted talent but man i wish he would have gotten more victories out his career. I loved watching him ride! Shorty too! Not really guys that wasted talent but guys that could have gone farther. There were a lot of guys that just came pro in the premiere class in the era of mcgrath, RC, JS, Reed and just were fast but just not fast enough.
