    I'm with Nadia more here. I absolutely loved the world building aspect and found the story to be really engaging.
    The action had me on the edge of my seat throughout, and can't forget Junkie XL returning with an awesome OST. I love Fury Road and I agree it's tighter narratively, but I'm glad we got something different.
    Also Kudos to George Miller for just doing his thing and creating this whole universe - the dude is almost 80 years old!

    I really liked it. I think it works better not as "Fury Road: 2" but as "Mad Max: 5". It's a great entry in the franchise and I like that all five films have different structures and vibes. Furiosa has a lot of call backs to the first film which I appreciated!

  • @acidjumps
    @acidjumps Před 3 měsíci +6

    Loved this movie. I don't think the worldbuilding detracts from the narrative at all. The world of mad max is really important in general for the story, not only in terms as a thematic background but also as a background for the action. If we didn't have so much worldbuilding, the green place wouldn't feel so important because we wouldn't realize how much "wasteland" the wasteland really is. It's not enough to just be told it's a wasteland. the world building plays a part of Chris's character and his desire for domination and that itself plays a role in the relationship with Furiosa. All of this is also a part of the general ecology theme of the movie. So overall I don't think the worldbuilding really detracts from the plot.
    As for the cgi I was surprised, when I watched thr trailer I thought it looked really weird but when I saw the movie I thought it looked good. So I don't know. Maybe I was just too "in the moment" and it didn't bother me. Maybe when I watch it the second time on a tv. But overall I do think the movie looked really good.

    • @KenTWOu
      @KenTWOu Před 3 měsíci

      I think some of the shots from the trailers were just not properly finished. For example, the flipping car shot, after Dementus bumped into Furiosa's car. In the movie they've added tons of dust under Furiosa's car, so everything looked grounded and believable. Meanwhile in the 2nd trailer there is almost 0 dust, you can't see the whole car accident, the whole movement trajectory, only the car flipping in the air. So the same shot looks really fake and unnatural.

    • @KenTWOu
      @KenTWOu Před 3 měsíci

      @@Paccyd33 Just manage your expectations, don't expect a perfect movie, don't expect an epic car chase at the end, the ending is significantly less ambitious in its scope. You might also question George Miller's choices like Jake did, like why Miller is showing these periods of Furiosa's life, but not the other ones. For example, I think the movie might work better for Jake if it was just about Dementus vs Immortan Joe war, and then Furiosa suddenly showed up (like Max did in his movies) and changed the outcome. But still it's a good movie, a worthy addition to the series IMHO.

  • @kenraves7931
    @kenraves7931 Před 3 měsíci +21

    I'm glad Nadia got to view it without the expectations of just wanting to see something similar to Fury Road! My partner and I like to engage with each Mad Max as biblical epics ('cause that's how four out of five of them are depicted) and Furiosa's best enjoyed when you're just in a vacuum being like "tell me a story."
    Like if there's never another Mad Max, or it's ten years between I'm going to be gratful there's this "epic" that covers pretty much everything of importance to /the story/ instead of just trying to make another car chase.
    Like Thunderdome's good for the unique shit, not for attempting to be Road Warrior.

  • @loltanios
    @loltanios Před 3 měsíci +1

    I fully agree with Nadia on this one, and I wonder if it's because Furiosa was my introduction to the Mad Max universe too. People who have seen Mad Max Fury take for granted how immersive and interesting the worldbuilding is in this movie, so that aspect certainly kept the movie from ever feeling slow or boring to me. Additionally having no knowledge of what would happen made Furiosa's escape scene really shocking and cool. I loved the episodic structure, and the playfulness of the titles is just another aspect to the world building that I loved. Both Furiosa and Dementus had interesting story arcs. It was a great movie. I did watch Fury Road the night after getting back from Furiosa and liked that as well, but not as much as Furiosa. Fury Road was almost constant road war, which I found repetitive, a little boring, and I thought they did it better in Furiosa without having that take over 90% of the story.

    No offense but the discourse over cgi "being bad" is a really tired topic in film reviews these days. We get it. You can identify cgi when you see it. Its like if people complained about Ray Harryhausen stop motion because it was "so obvious the gorgon wasnt real" but they didn't and his work is celebrated. Like come on. Meet the movie half way for once.

    • @KenTWOu
      @KenTWOu Před 3 měsíci +3

      Yeah, it's the same shit with video games and texture resolution. Like any normally sighted person could notice that that specific tree wasn't properly textured and looks low-res, because either someone missed it or it was outsourced or whatever, not a big deal when the game has hundreds of them. Besides some Fury Road's backgrounds look fake in 4K, because it wasn't a 4K movie. I don't care.

      When CGI is bad in a visually realistic movie, it pulls me out of the immersion and reminds me "this is all fake". Of course I know the movie is fake, but being reminded of it disconnects me. It's like a storyteller pausing and saying "i made that up btw".
      Movies need to be consistent with their language / universe / visual quality for me to stay engaged. This also goes for cartoons/animes.

    just watched it last night and I thought this was the perfect introduction to the series, even though I have seen Fury Road, but I don’t remember it that well. I think I enjoyed it so much because I went in with pretty low to no expectations, so I can’t really compare them. I wish they had screened Fury Road in the cinema after, cause Furiosa made me really excited to watch it again. Although I hated that they put visuals from Fury Road in the credits, it kinda spoils it for no reason for people who haven’t seen or forgotton the movie.

    Comparing with FR, I was disappointed by the lack of innovations in the world's design and the action scenes (e.g.FR had the swamps, the car designs, the fiery storm, the guitar man, the stunts, the milk fortress, the spray can fanatics, etc.). Almost everything "cool" and "refreshing" was already in Fury Road.

  • @danielbarrero2815
    @danielbarrero2815 Před 3 měsíci +3

    I loved Furiosa! I’d give it a 9, but it isn’t quite perfect like Fury Road, particularly because of the uneven tone. For example, the scene where Hemsworth licks a tear and says “yummy, so zesty!” pushed the camp factor to full Sam Raimi mode and it didn’t mesh well with the emotional impact of the scene. There’s multiple instances of this throughout. The effects were also a bit fake looking, particularly the backgrounds. Every single other thing in the movie is excellent, though! Definitely worth watching in theaters

    While I hate the hobbit trilogy, I will say it's not totally Peter Jacksons fault, originally Guillermo del Toro was the director & long story short, while the film as green lit, Warner Brothers was refusing to send the money to start production, Del toro then left to pursue other projects & WB started to send the money for the film once they started losing their filming locations.
    Jackson had to retool everything, turning a del Toro somewhat standalone 2 part film into a hobbit 2 part film series, that was set in Jacksons universe, originally that was not the case. So not yea, lots of issues, I'm assuming having adding another film to make a trilogy was to get money back from all the expensive CGI.
    btw, I agree with Nadia!

    Agree man carrying thing, I'm a big George Miller fan and Furiosa has a lot of good stuff going on but it's not a solid film like Fury Road. The character arcs are weaker and the practical effects aren't as strong. Fury Road was so simple yet SO EFFECTIVE, Nux's self sacrifice is a great example (willing to do it for a false prophet/god and finding out he's actually a mere mortal and then sacrifices himself for his friends, holy crap the end of that movie made the hairs on my scrotum rise). I kinda felt nothing at the end of Furiosa.

    I went with a friend of mine and she was excited to see it. Then we got to the end and they show the clips from Fury Road and I was packing up to walk out. So she pokes me and says the movie is still going. It wasn't until that point I realised she hadn't seen Fury Road either. It's funny to be worried about people not understanding a prequel because half the time they try to cram as many easter eggs as they can that nod to the next movie. I appreciate people can enjoy this without needing to see Fury Road. Not that they are seeing it. Fury Road wasn't a huge hit. Maybe that's a genuine concern for a more casual filmgoer that they're worried that because they didn't see Fury Road they wouldn't understand this. It doesn't really advertise as a prequel unless you know who Furiosa is. I think I'm seeing at least part of the reason Furiosa isn't hitting with audiences.

    Please watch all the others. You can see them in just about any order. Mad Max is great, because the first one (and now furiosa) are the only movies that are like… 100% canon. The world continuity is very lax, in the way that Max is more of a mythic folk hero than a real person, in all movies except the first. The whole world is very mythical and Shakespearean, with degenerate characters speaking in beautiful poetry, and using newly made words.

Beautiful production replaced for awful and digital fakery, subtle and clever worldbuilding replaced for infinite exposition and uninteresting lore, Theron emotion and gravitas replaced for Anya cold mono-expressiveness, scary Immortan replaced for Hemsworth doing Marvel level jokes. For a movie so full of narration and events, theres no room for Furiosa development and psychology. The fact that her relationship with Immortan is basically sided makes the tied ending to Fury Road quite meaningless

      Reviews like this makes me SOOO happy that I basically forgot my entire experience of Fury Road before watching Furiosa. I loved Furiosa despite all of the things it didnt do as well as Fury Road, explicitly for the reason that it's still the 2nd best action movie I'll ever watch. I don't blame you for this review, as I probably would have felt similar if I had done the same. For this very reason I try and draw as little comparisons between two movies.

    this is one of those meandering disasters of a film that makes you realize that much of modern film discourse, at least on twitter, is now a cult of performativity and cheap heuristics all assumed solely at seeing who can larp the hardest as the biggest "cinema enjoyer" on any given day. it's genuinely amazing how it manages to indulge literally all the pitfalls that Fury Road was praised for avoiding.
