    Hi everyone,
I know there are different versions of this tune, but I just thought I might share something interesting seeing as though this tune has had me going through some old stuff of my family’s over the past 4days.
I think I may have the original lyrics or something close to original for this tune if anyone is interested, read up.
The lyrics I actually found in my grandfathers old suitcase. Most of it’s contents was from world war1 where he was wounded. He died when I was only 7 years old, but the things he left for me for when I got older, I still have.
Anyway I found a diary that obviously didn’t belong to him, it’s way too old, so he must’ve found it at some point during the war, it was dated 1687 mostly full of hand written songs and poems and very water damaged but mostly readable.
Granddad wasn’t a whaler, he was a ring boxer and tradesman so finding the personal diary of a sailor is pretty out of scope, especially since most sailors had a lot of trouble reading and writing, if they could at all.
I always wanted to read through it at some point but life happens and I forgot about it, it’s still here and I’ve e skimmed through it a few times, but never sat down and fully read it, until a couple of days ago when this song came up on my CZcams playlist and I felt like this song was incomplete. I knew this song was in the diary so I grabbed it. And thought I’d post up (what I think) is the original lyrics.
I might even try to sing it on CZcams one day. But I don’t want some museum trying to take my grandfathers diary. Even though it wasn’t technically originally his (it’s called the spoils of war, get over it).
But I thought I’d write them here and share them in case people are interested.
The only thing I’ve changed is putting the lyrics into lines and some punctuation marks to make it more readable. The spelling hasn’t been changed too much but I did have to correct some because it was damn near unreadable if I left it, obviously this sailor just wrote what the words sounded like to him, I did want to keep it as original as I could but some words took me a good few minutes each to decipher, some don’t even look like English at all, so I have cleaned a lot up, but I’ve really tried, my spell checker went nuts on this! So I had to spell everything correctly and go through, word by word and change them. Sorry if I missed any.
Although even with my slight doctoring, when you read it with the accented words, it seems very appropriate for a sea shanty. Although this seems more like a working song than a shanty, so it probably should be more upbeat. But I’m no historian, Anyway take a look...
Blood red roses “old/possibly original” lyrics written 1687:

Go doun now ya bloud red rosis!!!

    End.
If I’m honest, it looks as if much of this song was cut for the amount of sex reference in there. Or they had one version for sea fairing and another to sing on the docks while mum was watching and waving them off. The period was like that as there were “unmentionables one should never bequeath before a lady”... these days no one cares unless you’re looking to complain about something.
But c’mon... it’s a 17th century song, written by sailors who went out to sea and didn’t even mention the word female, for anywhere between 6 months to 3 years. I think we can cut the guys a bit of slack here, as they put the frustration into their songs rather than swim for it.
There are other sea tunes far worse than this one. This is actually kinda tame in comparison.
Anyhow hope you enjoy. It was really good inspiration to get off my butt and look though some family history.
    C-ya!

My understanding is that this was a shanty taking the piss out out of the seafaring abilities of the Marines who were on all Royal Navy ships to keep the press ganged crew in line...

@@Urban_Goose that why I said at the beginning... “if you’re interested read up”, obviously you’re not interested, but you still just had to leave a comment. If you’re not going to add to a conversation, nobody cares. But to leave a comment about “not having time”... do you want sympathy for that or are you just looking for validation on the internet?
