    Pet peeves with mine… after 5 years
    1) Not safe when it rains… car damn near hydroplanes when water is “pushed” underneath it.
    2) Mine has a gas tank issue where when I put gas in it the pump stops like it’s full… even after they supposedly replaced it when it was under warranty. I hate going to get gas
    3) Range never matches how far you can go
    4) When you charge it the charge dies when you unplug it when you haven’t driven it
    5) It sometimes sounds like it’s going uphill on the regular street. Don’t know how else to describe it. Then it goes back into the right gear on its own.
    I had 2 Honda Crosstours prior to this and absolutely LOVED them. I hope they come back!

    Great review on the awesome Clarity (liked and subscribed). I’ve got the 2018 version and love mine for the most part. Lots to talk about it: pros: good power in sport mode and ability to charge the car at many places for a low price or free - cons: agree about the low windshield wiper fluid, and inconsistent cruise control - but for the most part, a practical and best of both worlds vehicle! Stay healthy, strong and blessed during these unique times. 🙏🏾

    Just recently found your channel. I must admit I have enjoyed learning about the Honda Clarity. Regarding the turn signal cancelling text transcription, I tested in my 2017 Honda Accord Hybrid (it has the two screen system) while using Apple Car Play. I can only assume that it’s a software bug associated with the single screen set up in your car. Honda has a way to report software bugs, and unlike my car they are starting to offer software updates. Best of luck with your Clarity.

    I definitely agree on the washer nozzles, and their inefficiency in position and flow is why the washer fluid runs out so quick. I also don't like how the engine revs to almost redline occasionally in HV mode to keep the battery level maintained. It wouldn't be so bad if the firewall has sufficient noise insulation.

    • @BradOnCars

    I think the idea of the Clarity is actually more practical than a full EV at this moment. However, I wish Honda tried to make the Clarity look normal like they did with the new Insight and Accord Hybrid.

      Hey Tan! For my life I totally agree. I need to leave the city, and where I live they are far apart, so not likely to find enough charging stations along the way just yet.
      That will improve, but at the moment I need to have the ICE to supplement once in awhile.

    Hello Brad, I think most of your complaints are very weak. I have owned 6 Hybrids (3 Prius's, 1 Hybrid Camry, and two Volts [12 & 16) and I am currently considering the Clarity.
    I will give you number 5 as that could be a major annoyance in an area with a lot of weather.
    Number 4 is a puzzler... I know the US and Canada get different options (I am torqued that your CRV Touring model has heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and heated outside mirrors... in the US we get none of those on our Touring CRV's. One of the "big pluses" of the Touring model in the states are the two memory buttons so that you can set the position of the seats for driver #1 and driver #2.
    Number 3...be a little more reasonable with the fluid... don't just hold the darn thing on for 5 minutes at a time...LoL
    Number 2... If you are trying to screw around with the charger down under the gear selector while you are driving... STOP IT! Drive the car, that activity is exactly what kills people!
    Number 1 is just "silly"... wah, it is not a Model 3... Duh; neither it is it a Porsche Panamera!

      Hey motorv8N! Thanks for the comment. I actually got mine from inventory here in Calgary! At the time there were two: one base model and then mine at another dealership. I negotiated the price I wanted to pay and they brought it to me a few days after.
      Such a shame; I love this car. It's so perfectly "Honda" and then the EV portion just makes it so much better. Zero maintenance practically (other than a few ridiculously unnecessary oil changes) and so cheap if you can stick to EV. I do my best to be at least 75% on battery.
      Sorry to hear it will take so long! Trust me it's worth the effort if you manage to get one! Thanks again for watching and the comment! -Brad

    The Clarity plugin hybrid is great a car. It has a very large battery for a plugin that gives it nearly 100% EV usage in normal daily driving. Very roomy midsize car at great price plus gets full tax rebate. In electric mode performance is excellent for a sedan. In gas mode it is an economy car with modest performance but adequate and comparable to other economy cars. You normally only use gas on road trips, so driving down the highway is not an issue. I would have increased the gas tank from 7 to 10 gallons for long road trips with longer range between stopping. But road trips are very good in this car with it roominess. This car is the perfect balance of size, economy, green energy and usability in short and long road trips.

      The Touring trim in the U.S. has the two driver seat memory, power passenger seat, leather steering wheel and seats, navigation, I think that is most of the differences. Researching the car, pros/cons, etc. then will be looking for a non hybrid/ev vehicle that gets good highway mileage, since I currently live in the middle of nowhere and highway mileage is a priority; 95% of our driving is the 15 miles to the closest town and the return trip.

    I have had my Clarity for a year and a half now with 23,000 miles. I absolutely love it!!! It does so well at doing what it is built for. I live in upstate NY and I definitely have to agree with you about refilling the washer fluid tank frequently in winter months. But just the other day I was complaining how my 2018 doesn't tell me my tank is low, it just runs out of liquid. And here yours is telling you it is low!!! It blew me away, idk why my feature isn't working. But living in the US my Touring model does come with power and driver memory for the seats. But I would definitely give that up for a battery heater and the heat pump system Canadian models receive. Living in NY I get the same cold climate as Canada and my battery range DROPS like a rock in winter months. Down to 25-30 miles on a full charge, due to no battery heater and resistance heating. Poor poor design/decision on Honda US' part. The one thing I dislike about my Clarity is that even the Touring doesn't come with extra features. I understand it is because of the added weight. But the fact my car is $43,000 and doesn't have heated steering wheel, ventilated front seats, and heated rear seats like the Touring Accord (Hybrid and non-hybrid trims) is absurd. I'd give up 1 or 3 mpg for those features. Another nitpick about the car is that when you wash it or go through the car wash, you need to make sure to towel dry the whole back bumper area or else the water dries and makes it already look dirty. This is due to the aerodynamics of the car so the air doesn't dry it properly or wick the moisture away. But it certainly makes the car look so dirty after just getting clean. (Especially in the winter months with road grime.)

    • @frenchy1224
      @frenchy1224 Před 4 lety +2

      Just went into the manual, and found out that the warning for low washer fluid is a Canadian Model exclusive..... not in US Models... kind of ridiculous. What I would do to have a battery heater, a heat pump for interior heating being more efficient, and that sensor. I'd give up my power seats in a heartbeat

    • @BradOnCars
      @BradOnCars  Před 4 lety +1

      Ha! Hey Jesse! Thanks for the comments! I know hey. I would gladly trade a feature or two to get other ones I'd prefer. And/or an MPG or two! And yes for where you live the Canadian model would be far better suited!
      And honestly already this winter I've felt like running the washer fluid pickup into a homemade jug of some kind! In a one-gallon bottle I can usually fill the "reservoir" three times! Insane!
      All that pales in comparison to the car of course, but man...
      All the best to you! May your car otherwise continue to treat you well! -Brad

    • @BradOnCars
      @BradOnCars  Před 4 lety

      @@frenchy1224 Hey Jesse! To be honest if the outside temperature is below -30 (which it is for a week or two a year up here) it gets down to 20 miles/30 km or so. Otherwise 30 miles/50 km is pretty typical. I'm sure the battery warmer helps a little, but so far it does not seem dramatically better.
      In the summer of course I can get up to 50 miles/80 km pretty easy, but 30-40 miles 50-75-ish is typical. I'm curious how things will fare this winter.

  • @D_M_W_

    Despite I love my car and would buy another one, these are my main concerns:
    -Lack of a rear whiper.
    -No Blind spot assistant on mirrors
    -Odd behavior of the cruise control (extremely slow to respond, when braking acts like someone who is learning to drive, and it doesn't use regen to brake.)
    -Small washer fluid tank. Add to this that In the US there's no low washer fluid indicator (is unbelievable that they "save money" on that) , so I carry a bottle of washer fluid in my trunk.
    -I can roll down all windows with the remote but can't roll them up.
    -the high beams are not that good

    • @BradOnCars
      @BradOnCars  Před 4 lety +4

      Hey Daniel! Thanks for the note. I totally agree on all points! The rear wiper would be especially useful. I live where we get snow so that would be totally helpful.
      Also yes I agree the cruise acts like a 16-year-old learning to drive doesn't it! Although I've learned to work with it. Plus if you put the car in Sport mode (briefly) during acceleration it will be better. But that is an intervention on a system designed not to need intervention...

      Dan, you are ONLY one in 120 comments to mention the horrible cruise control. Are you and I the only ones that have noticed this? Both the adaptive cruise and the standard cruise are equally bad. The system doesn't kick in until the speed drops to 2 mph below set point and then lets it drop another 1 mph and then applies lots of throttle and overshoots by 2 mph. Does it every time.

      Agree and also would like to add: 1) paddle type control for regen. braking is marked backwards (intuitively) the "-" marked paddle *increases* braking, etc. Also, 2) when in EV mode which I use most of the time, the car will very occasionally, on small roads with 'surface irregularities', automatically trigger its 'road mitigation' action (warning alarm, etc) even though it's turned off. [The latter indicates 'autonomous driving control' still has some bugs to work out.]

    Both Honda and Toyota where very cautious in the application of Direct Injection. Similar thinking applies to making an EV. In the pipeline companies like Maxwell with dry cells and supercapcitors will make todays EV as quaint as the first ones that the ICE engine made obsolete.

    Any vehicle that has a gas engine and gas tank can be driven without ever charging it. We have many plug in hybrid vehicles where I work with no place to plug them in. We have then for the interim until we move to a new facility that will have chargers. One of the Plug in Prius's we have is now 5 years old and has almost never been plugged in. Amazingly, it still had it rated range when charged. I have also noted that the Prius Prime gets far better mileage when not plugged in than the Gen 2 and Gen 3 regular Prius. Brad, have you had any complaints with the cruise control? On mine, if the throttle goes to zero while descending a hill, the cruise will not re-apply throttle until speed drops 2 mph below set speed, then the cruise applies a lot of throttle and overshoots the set point. I've had 10 different cars with cruise and every one (including old mechanically activated ones) was better at maintaining a steady speed than my Clarity. The Adaptive Cruise is just as bad. When approaching a slower vehicle it often waits to long to slow down and then brakes hard and slows down WAY too much. Of the 120 comments below, only Daniel Moreno called out the cruise control.

    • @BradOnCars

      Hey John! To be honest it is a little annoying. And my threshold for braking is more conservative than it is unless I set it for longer distances from the car in front (I have only ever used it in full ACC FYI).
      And yes it does overshoot and then wander around the set speed more than I like. But otherwise I do use it quite a bit and enjoy that it has the braking function. Now I'll have to pay more attention to it! Maybe make a video to see if mine is the same as yours.

    My touring model 2018 Clarity has an electric auto adjusting driver's seat. It also has an electric adjustable front passenger seat. I have a small complaint to say that my right leg, just above the knee, almost always comes to rest on the side of that center console bridge which is annoying. It makes me want to use cruise control so as to remove my foot from the gas and move my leg over to keep it from resting on that center bridge. Want to mention that I love my Clarity and would highly recommend it to someone who travels 50 miles round trip on a daily basis. I am getting about 58 miles (93.3 kilometers) per charge. Re the wiper situation, the issue can be mitigated by observing how/when/where the fluid starts to come onto the windshield.
    Have someone sit in the drivers seat while you observe closely how they work.
    I engage mine to start wiping and then when its in the upper half of the windscreen give a short pull on the stalk to get a start with less than a second so you see how they put the fluid on the screen,notice it comes out in a different place on the upstroke than the down stroke as well as how much fluid less than a second would put on the screen Notice the use of gravity as part of the overall design.
    Regarding the USB I recommend buying a used IPod Touch put your music on it and plug and leave it in the passenger, Mine has enough music and if / when it hangs I have taught myself to unplug and while leaving my hand over the connection so as not to lose physical contact with it gently plug it back in, its a work around but less problematic.
    You don’t have to connect your phone with this set up because it has Bluetooth it automatically does this for you wirelessly, you could make use of the ph usb to just charge the phone or for the other many uses,
    Seats I will be replacing mine with a late model high end car that would have been totaled finding the seats is no challenge but honda tells me that is I replace yet seat I would be voiding my warranty. WTF
    I bought mine with a 15 year horizon BTW. Did you eve do the magnet test ? See how much of the cars’ shell is aluminum or rubber/vinyl(bumpers) i.e. the car can look like it does today 15/20 years down the road. Use a business cars magnet or a weak one, i had asked the salesman when I was purchasing the car about the aluminum content but he did’ not know so he found a magnet about the size of a quarter thick as a loonie , when it finally did stick I thought it would rip the paint off when i tried to remove it, of oftheir demo. It did eventually come off.
    Late to me was realizing I did not need to use my paddles, as i discovered while normally braking, that I could affect my regen just by using the brakes, watch your regen on the dash while normal breaking the harder you brake the heavier the regen,regardless of paddles, now I on,y use them if circumstances dictate which are almost never.

    You are correct about the small windshield washer fluid tank. The spray coming off the wipers seems less effective. I have the all electric 70-90 mile range model and it has power seats. I have one thing I hate. If I open my door at low speed while backing up or going forward to see how close I am to something on the side of the car the vehicle slams it self into park. Also I have a button on the remote that indicates the ventilated seats will come on if I hold it to start cooling before I get in the car but I don’t think that feature comes in this model so why have that.
    Last complaint. Why have a hump on the center of the floor on the rear seat. There is no drive shaft and that really limits leg space for the rear center seat occupant. Otherwise impressive vehicle and more reliable and comfortable riding than a model 3. Honda just needs to figure out how to get a realistic all electric range figure in this car so it doesn’t just meet the needs for people with short commutes.

      Above the large "track" and "folder" buttons is a horizontal line that bends up and then down on the right like an arrow pointing up.

    Had the 2018 Clarity after owning a 2013 Chevy Volt. Since Chevy was discontinuing to make the Volt I picked up the Clarity. Was disappointed with the Clarity. The self steering feature was inconsistent and dangerous. About a third of the time I tried using it the car would ride on the left lane marker, and if the highway had more than a very gentle turn the car would not steer enough and move into the adjacent lane. I took the car into the Honda dealer to have it checked, the service could not duplicate it. In addition the car's engine would run at random times when the car should have been running only on electric. Sometimes the engine would be racing at about 3-4K RPM while driving through residential neighborhoods at about 25 MPH. Again, Honda service techs were unable to duplicate the issue when they drove it. After two and a half years of this and other issues, and no software updates in all that time, I just unloaded it.

    Yesterday for the first time the engine turned on. Not sure why. I had a full charge and I was sitting at a traffic light. Anyone know why this happened? I thought their might be a “stale gas“ feature built in to the car. I only have about 700 miles on the car and this was the first time this has happened.

Thanks! And good luck with the car!

    • @patshozo9158
      @patshozo9158 Před 5 lety +2

      @@BradOnCars The gas engine sometimes cycles on to make sure the parts inside the ICE is properly lubricated. It's normal for the gas engine to kick on and use a scant 0.07 gallons of fuel during this cycle. The gas tank is pressurized and will keep your "old" fuel stable. Having had driven for only 2 months, I have not had to fill the tank of petrol. Driving on EV miles only is so nice. As @Paul Nunley said, the 60 mile range is possible per charge if you don't use the climate control. Cabin air heating takes a huge amount of battery energy which reduces the miles per charge number the subsequent day. I am in Southern California where our winters are spring like and we don't use the heating as much as everyone else does. A very well engineered car suited for most drivers - 2018 is the first year model release in North America - and a hit in my opinion.

    • @DXbrittanysweets
      @DXbrittanysweets Před 5 lety +1

      That's absolutely normal it just means either your battery was a little to low , so the engine automatically came on to give it an extra push/charge or help. But not bad, but what I don't understand is how you can drive such a great car always in economy mode??? Because it had such little power and is defeating the purpose of the hybrid model. Because the engine comes on and give the battery power and charge in conjunction together, they get great gas miles and electric usage real low. Meaning uses very little of both witch optimizes quality and gas miles.i travel about 120-200 miles a day and fill up my car maybe 1a week for 7$ and I live in NYC. So take it out of economy mode and put your H.V.button on and see what this awesome car can really do.

  • @jeffpidot5523
    @jeffpidot5523 Před 5 lety +4

    I've had my Clarity Plug-in for 15 months. It is a very refined car in its interior appointments and when driven electrically, and inexpensive for what you get if you can avail yourself of the US $7500 tax credit (I believe the CDN credits may be even more generous). I agree that the wiper fluid reservoir should be larger, but this is minor. More importantly, the gas tank could be larger than its 7 gals, which significantly limits distance before gassing up on long trips. Just 2-3 more gallons would be very helpful.
    Like you, I get much lower range on electric driving in the dead of winter than in warmer months, but that is true for all electric cars. I certainly disagree with you that the Clarity should be more like the all-electric (and unaffordable) Tesla. The whole purpose of buying a PHEV like the Clarity is to have a backup gasoline engine, and range anxiety for any all-electric car is much worse where range is reduced significantly in cold climates (probably explains why Tesla is not sold in cold Canada). With existing technology, having both a battery large enough to propel the car electrically for a very long distance and a gasoline backup engine and associated gas tank would result in a car that is too heavy to be moved efficiently. So, the best compromise I've found so far is the Clarity, which is why I own one.
    What you didn't mention, and in my mind the worst characteristic of the Clarity, is its lack of driving refinement when operating with the gasoline engine: on the highway this is of no consequence; but around town, the gas engine is noisy and clunky, quite out of character for this otherwise refined car. This characteristic is explained by the small size of the Clarity's gas engine and the fact that it is principally used as an electricity generator, with the car being propelled through the electric motor, meaning that the gas engine revs high like a generator in ways that are awkward and don't correspond to the speed of the car.
    A few other issues with the Clarity: While there is good lumbar support, the seats have no lumbar adjustment for those who require it. The infotainment system is not the latest technology; therefore a bit slow and unintuitive, though one gets accustomed to it. The headlight illumination is relatively anemic, even on high beam. The car uses a lane watch camera to detect vehicles in the right side's blind spot but lacks blind spot detection on the left side.
    All in all, I am happy with the car, and it remains the best of the bunch for available PHEVs. Most of its issues can be easily remedied by Honda in future versions. But, as to the gas engine's lack of refinement, a major fix will be required.

      I agree on all counts except the gas tank size. I don't have a Clarity but I have a Scion iQ that gets 37 mpg with an 8 gallon tank and it's been more than sufficient. I took a trip 800 miles each way only stopping for food and gas and I stopped only 4 times with 3-4 gallons left each time and spent 30 seconds or less filling up every time.

      I agree I was a bit harsh, given that I frankly love the car generally-speaking. And absolutely have I noticed the noise when the ICE comes on, especially when it seems (rather frantically) to be trying to charge up the batteries as well as move the car. Now that I have experienced that more I would be all-in with having that on my list.
      I'm glad you're happy with the car. In my case it continues to do exactly what I bought it for. It is even a little more fun(-ish) than I anticipated. My wife's main irritant is that I use the steering wheel controls a lot - the darn things click every time you press a button.
    The windshield washer at half a gallon is unfortunately standard in many sedans now. If you're going through this as fast as you claim, I'd check the washer lines for a leak or a clogged nozzle. This may also help your "line" issue.

    I have a Clarity EV, strictly used for commuting. I Knew what to expect going in and basically am satisfied with the overall experience as wanted I to try an EV and take advantage of the rebates and "free" charging station, etc. Glad it's just leased.
    My nitpicks:
    1. I hate the Honda infotainment system (period). it's so backwards! My old iPod classic interface is superb when compared to it! I wished I had an audio in jack so I could bypass the screen and use my iPod controls instead. This thing is basically an Android tablet and even my old Kindle works better for music playback!
    2. I don't like the fact that we can't install our own APK's on the system for USA version (unless you hack it), as looking for app upgrades to the system! I may hack it soon!
    3. The electrical gremlins that surface every so often like my Key fob not opening the doors when I get near the car or the trunk refusing to close and opening with a beep sporadically!
    4. The front design of the car is pretty nice, but the rear half of the car just doesn't do it for me. Wished the rear half looked more like a Civic or the new Honda Insight.
    Again, glad it's just leased and looking forward to what's ahead for Honda! Thankful to try out an EV and basically enjoy the experience.

I'd love to crack it and put in whatever I want... Best of luck with the car! I hope it treats you well! Oh and thank you so much for watching and commenting! I really appreciate it!

      The wiper arms are unique. There are two nozzles one for the upstroke and the other for the down. Unlike most systems that spray it onto the windshield, the fluid is released thru the end of a nozzle and flows onto the W/S as the arm moves up the fluid pours out to the end of the blade initially then as the blade goes higher the fluid the runs to the back of the blade theby coating the W/S with fluid along the full length of the blade. On the downstroke the fluid is released by the second nozzle designed for the downstroke and runs underneath along the blade creating the same result. I found it surprising when I first discovered the small tank, and have been minimizing my consumption by better understanding the tech, 1 pull of the wiper stick does a decent enough job for a clean, I also have a back up bottle in the boot in the trunk. Canadian with 7600km, 45km of battery range when the temp was -20c last week as high as 82 km last summer.
      Re the phone I plug mine in put it on the shelf and forget it until i am ready to leave the car carplay /Siri handles the rest. The seats were a disappointment and I am presently working on putting in a used RDX leather power seat ($400/500) I have a 2007 rdx whose seats @150000km are in exceptional shape and I expect I will have no trouble sourcing one. I got over 450 miles total with full battery and full tank combined, not having to worry about finding a EV charger in remote area where only gas stations avail is big issue. Luckily the gas engine recharges the battery so Clarity itself is its own EV charger.
