I found the the Opinel #8 and #6 are pretty good alternative options for food prep. When visiting a family member’s house that doesn’t have decent kitchen knives. They are incredibly inexpensive and easy to keep in the glove compartment for such occasions. Saves me the frustration of trying to use a dull steak knife to slice tomatoes.
The Opinel 13 is designed for David C. Andersen of Knife Center. He has a "Larger than Average Hand" size. We find Opinel are great knives for mods. Great vid MC.! Happy Easter from Australia.
I bought my Opinel No. 8 on a family trip to France a long time ago, so it actually has emotional value for me. I used to EDC it before I found the knife community and went through the rabbit hole I am today. Funny story: I took it out a couple of months ago, sharpened it and use it to cut a random thing, and I ended up cutting myself and needing stitches on my finger. It's scary sharp. I like it even more!
The background to this knife. Opinel originally just made a couple of these knives for shows and fairs as a demonstration object, not for sale but the knife got so popular and requested by everyone who stopped by that they ended up producing them in rather small numbers. This knife basically is a fan-service.
I have an Opinel #6. What sets this one apart is that the grip is olive wood rather than the usual beechwood. It’s comfortable in the pocket and has a sharp edge. Inexpensive as well!
I’m not a fan of the Opinel either, but I’ve seen some modded ones that have re-contoured and burnt handles, acid washed or tumbled re-ground blades with like, swedges or finger choils, and I’ve seen some that have new blades or new handles. Those are pretty cool and if I wanted to take on a small project someday I might try that out.
I've got the Opinel No.8 and the No.12 both are the high the carbon models, both are proberly the sharpest knives I've ever owned and easy to keep sharp, and yes the wood swells when it gets wet and are hard too open, I have accidentally cut my self with both of them, the lock is a solid one ,great food prep knives ,I had a lanyard on the twelve, I put the open knife on my bedside table the draw was closed onto the lanyard knot and when picked up the knife it lanyard was stuck in the draw as I pulled my hand away the knife stayed put and I sliced the inside of my fingers open, after this painful bloody event I removed all the lanyards from the rest of my knives, but they are good knives I'd buy one directly from the manufacturer to save middleman costs,
The opinel no 13 was made as for the display stands but due to poor communication from opinel the retailers sold it and because it's massive people bought it
This reminds me of probably the only good scene in Crocodile Dundee 3. His son asks "do you have your knife on you?" and he responds with "well I have my pocket knoife..." Minutes later he whips out a freakin ginormo folding bowie. So the Opinel 13 is Mick Dundee's backup backup knife for me.
You need to review and compare this to the Opinel No. 2! I have a tiny zen garden on my desk at work and display mine in there. Usually $5 when you can find them. Fun to add on to a knife order for the lolz
I ended up buying the #4 with keychain because the #2 was so tiny, but I'll probably go back and buy a #2 just so I can say I have one. Currently I own: #4 stainless, keyring #6 stainless #8 stainless #8 stainless with sheath #8 stainless with walnut handle #10 carbon #12 stainless (the first Opinel I ever bought). Planning to buy #2 stainless, keyring #7 stainless #9 stainless #10 stainless #12 carbon #13 stainless
I own one and actually used it to cut a watermelon 😹 it did an excellent job and then it was a most unexcellent pain to fix the wood swelling. There are a few ways to waterproof an opinel, which I sadly learned afterwards, deep frying them in oil actually does the job (impregnate them with linseed oil)
Yeah there's wood hardeners and Boiled linseed oil. TBH I know its ...meh...but I actually prefer the polymer handled ones because the wood problems. People mod them all the time for bushcraft useage
I've heard the legends, the praise, but I've never handled an Opinel. This large one seems to be for camping maybe... People love these blades... Knife Center (I trust those guys), say that the blade has simple, but near perfect geometry for many types of cuts
MC: disappointed you didn’t pull an ‘Advanced Knife Bro’ move and give us some footage of you processing fire wood with that knife. Obviously it’s meant for ‘survival’ 😎
I consider Opinels folding kitchen knives and for that they are excellent. I love to use them when camping. It drives me nuts to see people uses "regular" pocket knives for food prep...
The Opinel 13 was originally part of their 1983 signature series, celebrating French people of note. This particular model bore the signature of Andre Rene Rousimoff.
How did you not compare it to the espada?!?!? Haha love it. I honestly feel like this is a clown knife, and a missed opportunity. As a cooking enthusiast, if they made it smaller with different proportions, it could have been a great travel cooking knife.
The purpose of the opinel 13 is to confuse and delight the people who like big overbuilt knives, and as a specialized multitool for people who need a machete and a club to baton some other knife through things
I really hope Walter Wells decides to use one of these blades in his "re-handled" opinel linerlocks some day. I believe it's purported use is as a machete, but the actual use seems to be sitting on hardware store counters/in windows to serve as advertising.
The opinel has 1 piece that all your box cutters dont: no plastic. If it's ruined, you've got wood you could repurpose as a handle for a knife or hell, use it to start a fire. The rest is metal that can be recycled or repurposed. No plastic or nylon, no buying replacement blades wrapped in plastic. But yeah idk what an opinel is actually good for other than reduced waste. I personal love the feel of the handle. It's like it's made for my little grabbers personally
It is , obviously, a knife focussed on gardening, pruning etc. It just isnt plastic like a Corona or Fiskars. The blade on this is easy for a homeowner to keep sharp. Just because you cant see the use case doesnt mean there isnt one. There are lots of ways to spend time outdoors...like how you go outside in your mind and imagine all of the "extreme" scenarios you can use your Benchmade to save your dream-lover's life from a raging grizzly, then use it to build a 2 bedroom shelter out if twigs.
My Opinel #8 is a perfect pocket knife. I've had it since I traded a classmate out of it in highschool, somewhere between 79' and 83'. As for the #13 the only usefulness I could fathom for that monstrosity I hanging from a billboard.
Actually yes it was distributed internationally as part of the display but they didn't give very good instructions on them so they got a bunch of stores saying they had sold them and they wanted more in so opinel started making them for sales
@Metal Complex yeah opinel's history section has tons of fun details like that including how the first blade punching machines were made because Mr opinel liked playing with cameras and other machines and wanted to help his dad who was a toolsmith
I love hearing you poop on opinels lmao. I love my opinels but I also have an Ontario Rat that I usually carry. But sometimes I carry the opinel just cuz I like the wood but that's about it
It is indeed for cutting food but not just fruit. It is used as a showpiece during a family dinner or a BBQ to cut roast or big pieces of meat. Opinel advises against it to chop with it, I think.
Only thing I could say negative about your videos is. It would be great to have metric measurements flash on screen when you measure stuff. As you've got a fan all the way in nz here. It would be much appreciated. Other than that I'm loving your channel. It was the channel that hot me into knives outside of work.
Opinel asked themselves what every other knife company should be asking. Instead of making mini, micro, and compact versions of their existing knives, they should ask, WWCSD. What Would Cold Steel Do. They should all start making XL versions of their knives.
This thing is absolutly absurd, but they made it maybe just because they were able to. Sometimes it"s just enough. It should be a shop sign for knives sellers...
I love moding opinel no'8 sand burn carve drill linseed and white beeswax then I do a mustard vinegar lemon juice paste on the blade thicker the better and draw patter with toothpick wash oil done.cheapest mod knife EVER.
Opinels are very simple knives. They're designed to be general utility pocket knives that cut really well, and they do. They're not tactical knives. They're not intended to be tactical knives. They're a pocket knife. The Opinel #13 is a pocket knife, for people with really long pockets.

Why do I like Opinels? (The small ones) You said it - they are so cheap as to be almost disposable. Which is great if you forget it in your daypack and airport security confiscates it. Again...

The Opinel #13. The 'office friendly' knife for Cold Steel enthusiasts
So we’ll said 😂💀
As a knife professional I can tell you that the Opinel 13 exists for maximum jackassery. It also doubles as a club for tactical situations.
Probably better as a club than it is as a knife, tbh.
I found the the Opinel #8 and #6 are pretty good alternative options for food prep. When visiting a family member’s house that doesn’t have decent kitchen knives. Detailed, real-life, Fruit Ninja weapon selection and tactics break down, the content I subscribe for 😂😂
I have an Opinel #6. What sets this one apart is that the grip is olive wood rather than the usual beechwood. It’s comfortable in the pocket and has a sharp edge. Inexpensive as well!
I have been waiting for this review my entire life. I just did not know it until now!
Is that an opinel in your pocket or are you just glad to see me😮
Clearly the purpose of the Opinel 13 is to pull a Crocodile Dundee "That's not a knife"... Lol
I honestly can’t think of a single reason to own that knife, but I want one just the same.
I keep a 09 in my work backpack as a food knife, nobody bats a eye at it and it's been developing a nice patina for the past few years
I’m not a fan of the Opinel either, but I’ve seen some modded ones that have re-contoured and burnt handles, acid washed or tumbled re-ground blades with like, swedges or finger choils, and I’ve seen some that have new blades or new handles. lol, I thought it was next to a key-chain sized opinel when I clicked the video😂
I lost it at "crunchy pants" 😂😂😂
If you open it with the lock in the locked position it will pop the collar off the top and you can disassemble the knife.
It was definitely designed to cut large cheese wheels down to a size where you can slice pieces off with your No8 😂
This reminds me of probably the only good scene in Crocodile Dundee 3. His son asks "do you have your knife on you?" and he responds with "well I have my pocket knoife..." Minutes later he whips out a freakin ginormo folding bowie. So the Opinel 13 is Mick Dundee's backup backup knife for me.

Planning to buy
#2 stainless, keyring
#7 stainless
#9 stainless
#10 stainless
#12 carbon
#13 stainless
As a self-proclaimed professional- this is obviously a prototype for John Wick's new EDC knife
I can imagine John Wick with Cold Steel's serrated Vaquero XL.
Obviously Lynn Thompson wanted a gentleman’s carry
Wonderful... another knife I can afford but don't want or need. MC 👋🏻 thanks for the laugh!
Well obviously the 13 was created to finely slice paper... in its proto-paper tree form.
That thing is just crazy huge!
It’s ultimate purpose is ridiculousness and I want one just to have something fun to hang up in the display case
I’m only guessing because you asked us to. I would imagine it’s some kind of agricultural use. Like harvesting a crop in a field.

I've also heard that you can tip molten candle wax onto the end, then melt it into the wood with a hairdryer.
I've heard the legends, the praise, but I've never handled an Opinel. This large one seems to be for camping maybe... People love these blades... Knife Center (I trust those guys), say that the blade has simple, but near perfect geometry for many types of cuts

I am french so I obviously have a couple opinels, i wouldnt edc a knife like that but it is my designated eating knife and i use it every day
The purpose of the opinel 13 is to confuse and delight the people who like big overbuilt knives, and as a specialized multitool for people who need a machete and a club to baton some other knife through things
Love my number 7, number 7 does not get enough love!
Definitely for crafting the perfect charcuterie board
I really hope Walter Wells decides to use one of these blades in his "re-handled" opinel linerlocks some day.
I believe it's purported use is as a machete, but the actual use seems to be sitting on hardware store counters/in windows to serve as advertising.

You need to compare it against the Civivi micro Elementum!!!!
You need to size comparison vs the cold steel exprada xl
It is , obviously, a knife focussed on gardening, pruning etc. It just isnt plastic like a Corona or Fiskars. The blade on this is easy for a homeowner to keep sharp. Great watermelon slicer.
Its purpose was advertising in hardware stores. It was used as a display piece. At least down here in Florida anyway.
Typical Florida
Actually yes it was distributed internationally as part of the display but they didn't give very good instructions on them so they got a bunch of stores saying they had sold them and they wanted more in so opinel started making them for sales
@@leokonge4624 ha really? That's interesting
But sometimes I carry the opinel just cuz I like the wood but that's about it
It's used in France for street fights. A rap song is named Opinel XIII
Hahahaha...I live for those Metal Complex comments "big knife equals big money" specially in those goofy voices. Love it!
You just can't please the Wicker pants crowd lol
Could you please do á review of the Manix 2 xl?
Heard this model has become popular with the smoker/barbecue crowd
It is indeed for cutting food but not just fruit. It is used as a showpiece during a family dinner or a BBQ to cut roast or big pieces of meat. Opinel advises against it to chop with it, I think.
It's definitely closer to the PM2 haha
Only thing I could say negative about your videos is. It would be great to have metric measurements flash on screen when you measure stuff. As you've got a fan all the way in nz here. It would be much appreciated. Other than that I'm loving your channel. It was the channel that hot me into knives outside of work.
Folding machete.
Beyond that, looks cool.
Looks like it might be good for harvesting Chaga fungus.
I use my #13 as a tooth pick! 😬
It's the French farmer's Espada XL.
No pocket clip? I'm out. 😂 If I liked opinels i would definitely pick up this thing.
I love moding opinel no'8 sand burn carve drill linseed and white beeswax then I do a mustard vinegar lemon juice paste on the blade thicker the better and draw patter with toothpick wash oil done.cheapest mod knife EVER.
Cool knives but for durability sake outdoors I prefer Morakniv
Go Go Gadget Opinel slice grapes 😂.
Maybe compare to a Cold Steel Espada extra large (7.5 cm blade). C'mmon...ya gotta do the voice of those wicker pants folks.
As a knife collector I feel like I am legally bound to buy at least one Opinel…I still don’t own one 🤐
This was made to be the first TSA approved knife
Opinel #13... obviously designed to be Durotan's gent carry.
HOW DID YOU NOT COMPARE THIS TO THE COLD STEEL ESPADA XL?!?!
Opinels are very simple knives.
They're designed to be general utility pocket knives that cut really well, and they do.
They're not tactical knives. They're not intended to be tactical knives. They're a pocket knife.
The Opinel #13 is a pocket knife, for people with really long pockets.
10:22 isn't it 12c27m?
nevermind, you said it right the second time around :)
Lmao! This knife dwarfs Metal Complex and Metal Complex ain't small!😂
Great for watermelon and huge hunks of meat at the cookout. Makes an impression!
Especially if you have a No. 2 in your watch pocket.
The Stainless opinels are some of the best steak knifes out there 😁 try it and then say I'm wrong 😉
Man this would've been perfect for April Fool's 😂
Take a look at Jörg Sprave's pocket machete XD.
My brother-in-law swears by Opinel and uses them constantly for eating fruit/food prep. So I have to assume that's what this is for.. fruits. Yeah, definitely fruits.
MC's really been on a large knife kick these days, huh?
"Reasonable,"😂
Obviously this very large knife is for turning very large slotted screws.
Swashbuckling of course! 😂
When I first saw one, I assumed it was an in-store display thing, but...Nope...It's an "actual knife" you can buy.
Andre the Giant used one as a neck knife.
Keychain knife?
I feel like this video is 4 days late 😂😂.
This is obviously made to help dig splinters out of your fingers
Is this officially the largest knife u have reviewed?
Gotta do a video slicing a watermelon with it!
That was obviously made to split cement blocks in half
It was designed for peasants to be able to fight Trogdor and defend their thatch-roofed cottages from burnination.
I also realize that the Opinel 13 might be the result of that one wild night Lynn Thompson had in Paris a few decades ago.
Purpose was to cut the meats when you cook whole
It's to cut big things !😂
This was designed for the European Grim Reaper to harvest souls with.
Is that an opinel 13 in your pocket, or are you just excited to see me?
Why do I like Opinels? (The small ones)
You said it - they are so cheap as to be almost disposable.
Which is great if you forget it in your daypack and airport security confiscates it. Again...
This has been long over done…this was done out of spite lol
Elephant circumcision.
