A fluke, aka a soft plastic jerkbait, is one of the best lures at catch big bass. There natural action looks extremely realistic to bass in the water which is why they are so popular for fishing.
There are many different ways you can fish a fluke and honestly I don't think that there are any bass ways!
BassFishingHQ is dedicated to teaching people how to catch more and bigger bass. I will go over different bass fishing tips & techniques that will put more fish in the boat or on the shore. Whether you are just starting out or a seasoned tournament angler, my goal is to help you catch more bass. - Sport
Sorry for the out of focus shots! Still trying to learn everything about these big cameras
Dude appreciate this video been dying to fish a fluke had no luck but yesterday I wanted to fish it Texas rig ima try all these ways thank
I mainly bank fish and my favorite way to fish them is kind of a hybrid between the usual method and the senko method. I'll let it sink for 3-5 seconds usually then give it a couple twitches and let it sink back down. It's like a senko but has insane drawing power
That’s awesome. I like that!
Yep thats what I do, I let it go all the way to bottom then dead stick it with a small twitch once and a while. Like a dying baitfish. I never fish a fluke fast or on the surface.
Recommendations on rods for this technique?
@@Christopherjamesmurphy21 I'd go with a medium to medium heavy rod, preferably a medium. I like to use a baitcaster but some people prefer spinning. If you have a baitcast reel that casts light baits well, I'd go with that. I use 12lb line, mono or Fluoro will work. The specific combo I use is a 7'3 M Halo XDIII Pro ($100) and a Shimano SLX MGL 70 ($150)
@erichthompson1194 I have a diawa tatula 150, Id like to use. I'll have a look at the rods you recommend. Thanks.
Double fluke rig is always 🔥!!!
Another way that gives a great action is on a jig head (I rig them like that below the dam where there’s a lot of current). The ones I use have the weight pretty far forwards and are fairly thin side to side. Do-It molds SHB-5-A and I also have a SHB-5-VA which I can’t find listed anywhere online. It’s the same style as the other one, but with round recesses for adding eyes and it comes in a few different sizes, mainly 1/8 and 5/8 oz, plus the smaller 1/8, 1/4, 3/8 ones use a larger hook than the other mold. That profile lets the fluke kind of dart and keel as the water hits the flat sides of the jig head. Kind of like a crappie tube with the jigs that go inside the tube where you the on about 3/16” back from the nose of the tube. Makes for a great injured / “trapped” Shad presentation while moving through the turbulent current.
I also like the “Dead Assassin” flukes, they have a keel and an almost Y shaped profile looking head on. They glide all over the place when you twitch them and kind of flutter down if you hold slight pressure on the line.
fluke is next on my bucket list of baits to gain confidence in. Crossed the swim jig off that list today
Found the weihtless Caffeine shad worked around shallow stumps during spawn works great here in South Africa 👍
Caffeine Shad is about the only fluke I use and it’s almost entirely replaced the Senko here in Florida. Cheers
Brother, I love how detailed you are when teaching "us" about the different baits, rods, & reels that you use. It's refreshing not to have any questions, about any particular bait, after your video is done. Thank you!!
One of the most informative fishing channels on YT. Keep up the awesome well-explained content!
I use a fluke to flip and fish in grass and heavy cover but i prefer to use a belly weighted hook vs a standard texas rig. Its a deadly bait in so many different situations.
Belly weighted hook
Does it “glide” in the water for a longer time I can see the use of it in a place with alot of vegetation
Awesome video. I just started trying to learn the fluke this year and haven't gotten bit yet. These tips are awesome. Thanks TB you're the man!
Good tips. I still have some original slug-O's which one could say was the generation before the flukes. Dang....I guess I'm old....lol. I dont use my slug-O's anymore, low stock, wanna save them for nostalgia reasons. Keep up the good work thanks for the video.
original slug-o's? veeery cool.
Sluggy like!
Awesome vid as always. Great tips on fishing the fluke. Looks like you got your boat back finally.
I fish it on anywhere between a 1/16 to 1/4 oz weighted hook depending on the current. 1/8 is my preferred weight cause I can use it subsurface and jerk it, or I can let it fall all the way to the bottom and do a combination of Jerking and fishing it like a t rig.
I put mine behind a dark small barrel swivel the use about a 2ft shot of floro leader. Helps prevent line twists and adds just enough weight for a slight sink
That first method with the pause then the long pull then the pause and long pull worked for me today multiple times!!!
Nose hooking a fluke can be great you can also use it as a drop shot bait. Double fluke rig works great too. Great ideas and tactics. Thank you Ty!
One of the most under appreciated baits. An oldie but a goodie.
The most effective way to use this lure for me and I've tried everything you've shown here, is to walk the dog. I live on the Pend Oreille River and another technique i use is to throw an un weighted fluke out into the current from slack water and just let the slack line curve around and hold the bait in the current. It'll naturally wave back and forth and entice strikes. I'm targeting fish that are holding in that transition zone between slack and current, rocks and sand.
Awsome information, thanks.
Just started running a Texas rig fluke in FL and I'm killing it!
Thanks for the tips going to try it
Another great video a lot of great tips 👍
I typically Texas rig my flukes. Actually caught a 2 pounder on a fluke just recently black with red stripes
Great video! I like to fish a white or chartreuse fluke on a buzzbait without the skirt in clear water.
Great ideas on fishing it. Will have to try the (Seth Fieder ) way for smallmouth on Erie. Thxs 🐟🎣
Video quality is insane dude you got it all!
Thanks man!
I nose hook them with a spring twist lock and no weight. creates amazing action. i might try using the trailer hook like you showed in this video.
Haven't tried the first one. Ill give it a try
Good stuff 😃
I just recently am spending some months in Florida. I hear that the fluke is still very popular here. I have seen HilarySue use a fluke. And now you and your uncle. That's 👍 great for me to hear! Gonna try it out! THANKS FOR ANOTHER GREAT VIDEO, LOVE YOUR STYLE OF TEACHING US AND FISHING.
You are correct the fluke is excellent in Florida. The warmer the water the better in my experience. Probably my favorite hot water bait in summer.
Excellent training video. So few hours on the water to try so many techniques.
That’s what has me almost ready to give up. Getting out for a few hours once every couple of months isn’t enough to refine and to catch my first bass. Even if I find something that works, the bass behaviors will be completely different by the next time I go.
The Keitech shad impact is really good for just letting it fall; it has more body roll than a normal fluke.
On a spinning rig i like to stick out my finger, reel quick and sporadic, and let the line slap it. It creates a crazy erratic action. I especially like it for flukes and also killer for senkos. A quick reel with the finger slap makes the lures go crazy.
Great on a Carolina Rig!
Great video
At a local lake here where I live flukes are the only bait you can get bit on and I loved this video!
Thanks for watching
Good video, bro. Double Fluke Rig for Smallies and Largies; Smallies can't stand it on our pelagic forage lakes. Carolina Rig for Largies is great in summer on deep rocks, especially off grass lines... Scrounger head in spring and fall; they absolutely smash it ~ Peace
I love zoom flukes there awesome
I’ve caught them similarly to the first way, except instead of fast pulls, take it about half speed or less. Keeps the bait a little lower and works great in highland rivers
maybe try what you describe on a carolina rig using a bobber you can fill with water. instead of an egg weight. fill it enough to get you down but not so much you get hung up. ya feel me?
Well, maybe i will finally start fishing flukes now. Haha thanks for the confidence!
I always have a fluke rod on deck when fishing topwater as well. If they miss the topwater and don’t hit again, i go right back with the fluke just under the surface like twitch twitch pause.
ah, Ty, you left out the 6th, the one i caught my pb on. the OLD BALL AND CHAIN. the fluke is texas rigged for weedlessness on a carolina rig. i either jerk pop pause or sweep it like the seth fighter, but on a carolina rig. could even use a bobber instead of a weight you fill with water to get it down, but just keep it just offthe bottom. am also a big fan of weightless or a 1/16 weighted hook. makes a good keel and spiral descent.
weightless when it hits the bottom i will grab the line just past the reel and pull it to the side and kinda wobble my hand in the line building tension, then release it like a bow and arrow, which can make the fluke jump toward the fish if done properly, triggering a a fight or flight response in the fish. ya feel me? great vid tho. gave me more options. which is good cuz i was a little stagnent on my fluke game.
I like to listen to you you got some badass ways learned a lot listen to some of your stuff
Neko rigged. Specifically the caffine shad. Incredible action on that tail on the up stroke
Fluke is my favorite all around lure
What's the rod and reel you use to fish the weightless plastic?
Ty
Here are two more: Put it on a Shakey head or wobble head. Both work great!
Dude Appreciate u I promise I was thinking bout that u just made my confidence shoot high I’m ready go fishing now n try it lol
@@miguelmorales2044 Bluff walls, steep drops, etc.
I have no special way to fish a fluke. Thats why I'm here to learn it lol. We'll see how it goes. I just picked up a bunch from zoom in a variety of colors
I dont see the link for the stinger hook rig/
Tie about a 14” leader to the front hook eye on a walking topwater. Texas rig it weightless.
Fluke Jr on drop shot is killer...
I typically fish a double fluke rig. Very effective 👌
@Ty. Can you please elaborate or post a link to the method?
Ty, I recommend using a non slip loop knot when fishing anything with a presentation of an actual fish and spinnerbaits too, the action on those are way more natural with a loop knot
even doing all of these, especially the fish like artificials and crankbaits really benefit from this
spinners still give a good presentation without it and you can give them a jerk to change the position of the blades in the water colomn but if its used w a loop knot it will stand up in the water and be driven more in line
Just what I like doing!, I been doing it recently and liking how the action looks in the water
and to add on to your other point about the texas rig, I love to put a splitshot or 2 just depends on how deep the area im fishing maybe 1 larger one, love love love the splitshot rig w the loopknot and my arkansas shiner zoom flukes
Also I like doing all of this but on my leader ill make a loop in the line about 6 inches up from the hook and make the loop about 6 inches, wrap the tag end through a few times lubricate and sench, cut the bottom line of the loop close to the knot and tie another hook on w a loop knot and rig both the offset straight shanks w the same fluke and throw a splitshot about 20ish inches up, my way of doing the double fluke rig
Pitching a fluke in heavy cover is one of my top five ways to catch em 👌
Best fluke technique for me, is on a long Carolina rig, but with a lighter weight... like a 3/16oz. weight
And do you use a weight/size?
Zoom Tiny Fluke on a mojo rig - killer finesse technique
Honestly? I love this guy
Thanks brother!
We've also "Pulled" a hard jerkbait on TVA water in East Tennessee for years
i will power shot (almost a diy Tokyo rig) in the grass during the shad spawn down here in florida.. 3/4 punching tungsten on a 20lb leader (with a small spiltring tie on the bottom of the leader) to a spro spiltring with a fusion19 4/0 ewg hook to 50lb smooth (blacked out) braid.
I like that a kot
I fish a Texas rigged fluke in California on a daily basis and it's usually as consistent as a senko. If one isn't getting bit the other will.
Zoulou/donky rig is the best!!
Try a double rig. Nick Smith has a good video out on that method.
Nose hooked with a weedless circle hook. Give it a lot more erratic diving action. All the weight is up front
I have a unique way of fishing a fluke. I fish one with your mom. She loves flukes.
A lure I really need to work on. I like em but damn I can’t get em to work
i hear ya, caught my pb on one with a carolina rig. but snce then, its been completely ineffective. i have kinda shined the fluke for 6xd cranks, rapala jerks, squarebills and chatterbaits. ya feel me?
Have you seen the popping heads they sell for them to turn a fluke into a weedless popper. Check them out
Power drop shot
Is this same dude as 618 Fishing minus sunglasses & spillways? Both channels are great
Drop shot a super fluke jr. on a 2/0 ewg hook. Also put it on a 1/8 or 3/16 oz shakey head beside cover or dock cables, dock posts, or skip it under docks. They skip really well on a shakey head. In addition to the ways you described, a super fluke on a C Rig is always money anywhere in the country. Match the color to the common prey, whether shad or bluegill. In pre spawn, use a red shad color and slay them, just like you'd think of a Rayburn Red for a rattle trap. Something about red in the pre spawn!!
Who makes a red Shad soft jerk bait?
@@jamessipes122 Bass Assasain
I have 2 rods Texas rigged flukes, one weighted one no weight. The no weight can be fished just like a frog. Can't count number bass that have hit this no weight fluke as it fell off a Lilly pad in the water. The weighted one I will put it on the outside grass edges let it sink to bottom, slow roll it first couple feet then hop it once, most hits are as it falls back down.
What size hook do you normally use?
4/0 EWG for full size fluke or caffeine Shad
I sometimes wacky rig a fluke. Something different and catches fish.
I have heard of that but have not done it. I’ll have to try it
So Tyler, since you know indian lake... I have been curious about the changing water clarity. My whole life I NEVER thought I would be able to see the bottom of indian. Well starting last year (whether its due to zebra mussels, COVID and lesser traffic, temperatures, the new spill way etc.) If it is a nice day, we can now see down to the lakebed on indian. How will this change the reaction/fishing there? I am guessing it might improve the fishing but not sure because the fish are used to muddy and lowViz. Will we need to change up things like bait color or will the same things that worked before still work? Should we spend some money and Experiment on colors that, before, were not as popular there? Change up the line? I am curious as to how it will affect the fishing...?
Well I am no scientist, but in my opinion I think it will make the fishing a little bit tough for a few years because the bass are going to be a lot more spread out than ever before. There is a lot more grass growing on the main lake than there has ever been and so there are more places for the same population of bass to hide. With that being said I believe that the Bass population is going to explode there over the next four or five years. With having that amount of grass on the main lake and good water clarity I believe there’s going to be some great bass spawns and I really think the overall size of bass and population is going to go up. Like I said though, it may take a few years to get there
@@BassFishingHQ yeah that makes sense. I did not think about those aspects! I know its a tough lake or at least tough to get a lot of weight so that would be awesome over the next few years if the population could expand. Thanks for the feedback! And keep the awesome content coming!!
@@BassFishingHQ I live in westerville. I have been trying to hit every local pond I can find during the week after work. I was going to check out darby bend lakes tomorrow. If you have a couple decent spots in the area let me know. I made all my friends subscribe lol. Later brother!
@@ndought I appreciate that man. There is a pond that is owned by Delaware behind meijer on 36. It doesn’t have a lot of fish, but it has some big ones
I been wondering how a fluke would do on a ned rig
I’ve done that with rubber worms drag em fast across the top and then kill it .
Fluke is one of my favorite baits for all bodies of water. They will catch everything from bass to tarpon.
Tarpon and Snook destroy them especially at the pump houses in Fl
@@RyanSmith-fb8rf I love skipping flukes under docks and mangroves for snook
@@40s9s3 me too bro love it.
Fluke is one of the best baits
C-rig
Weightless-skip under docks
I use a Zman fluke as a topwater because they float.
1/8th ounce belly weighted fluke 👍
Senko method.
And I work my fluke 3 of the ways you mentioned, poppin it on top of the water is how I fish my fluke
That is one of the best ways!
Another thing you can do....... One day I randomly put a fluke on a tokyo rig and it had great action. Caught 3 fish that day on it.
I like that idea
@@BassFishingHQ yeah. And hook set ratio seems great on tokyo rigs
Ok, I’ll bite! I fish a fluke just like a frog across slop, lily pads, and mated vegetation. In fact, I prefer a fluke over a frog for that. When I come to an opening/pocket, I can kill it, and it’s just like a senko.
really, like a frog? interesting. and you obviously have had success with that... i'll have to try that, thank you.
Sometimes I fish it by hooking thru the side of the nose and they the side of the body and jerking it and then kill it. It looks like a dying shad trying to get away.
Peepeepoopoo
Had no clue you were an Ohio boy! Im from the southeast part of the state what about you?!
Dont forget drop shot.
I killed them tonight neko rigging a fluke. Have you ever tried that technique?
Yes. The caffine shad specifically. Love it
Drop shot fluke
Wacky rig that bitch!! Jkjk lol. Drop shot works pretty well though
