  • Jeff Hickman's Fish Taco Fly is a well-known steelhead catching fly. This version is a slight variation of the original Fish Taco for Trout Spey and Skagit Fishing. www.cooperland...
Giving credit to Jeff Hickman for his innovative fly design, I scaled down the Fish Taco and used some brown Ostrich from a feather duster I found at Wal-Mart for around $7.00. Lately, this has been my go-to fly for trout spey on the Kenai, especially for skagit casting for trout! The fish taco is a lot like a trout intruder, but with only a single stage.
The original Fish Taco Steelhead Fly uses a wound hackle under body which I have substituted and scaled down for an easier tie. You will still get the same action with this skagit fly pattern.
The materials used for the Trout Spey version of Jeff Hickman's Fish Taco can be swapped out for your favorite colors. We love brown, green, white and black with some orange accents for the Fish Taco.
The Fish Taco is a simple, easy to tie and very effective fly for Trout Spey Fishing for Rainbow Trout and Dolly Varden up here in Alaska. This fly will also be effective for Great Lakes Trout and Steelhead. Add the Fish Taco to your Alaska Fly patterns and you'll be glad you did!
Thank you so much for watching and Tight Lines!

Dave, Had to smile at the feather-duster, been using them for years! Recently found lambs-wool dusters that yield zonker-strips of 2 -3 inch long hair that moves beautifully in the water. The dusters come in lots of nice colors as well. Been experimenting with that pillow/toy stuffing material - its clear and very springy; mixed with a bit of Ice-dub (for color) makes an excellent support for a marabou, ostrich or fur collar. Cheers! Hank

Watching your videos is a breath of fresh air, simple straight forward instructions, but very easy to understand step by step, ever thought about tying up some earth tone Squidro's ? that would be cool in smaller sizes for trout or warm water
