  • Enjoy this drive around the Alabama Hills, near Lone Pine, California, on the east side of the Sierra Nevada. This drive begins before dawn (the sunrise was not great), then takes you around Movie Road and up Whitney Portal Road, to the winter turn-around point.
MyDrivelapse.com and Takemytrip.com provide driving videos and stories to help you plan your trip. Check out hundreds of videos on my CZcams channel. Subscribe if you like it! Dozens of new videos are on the way in the coming weeks.
I made this trip in March, 2016. Video shot with a Brinno TLC-200 Pro time-lapse camera, mounted on my roof with a homemade magnetic case. I travel with two Brinno cameras - one facing forward, the other in reverse. Sometimes the reverse camera captures better video (fewer raindrops and bugs hit the rear-view lens).

Awesome video! There wasn’t any physical barrier preventing you from going further up the Whitney portal road, right? They’re just essentially warning you that the road up is unplowed?

The alabama hills are some 6000ft in elevation and are tiny compared to the Sierra Nevedas which tower over them some 14 494 ft

Last time l took the Portals road was on my honeymoon in Sept. 1978 and l had to turn on the heater halfway up as the engine was over-heating because of the steep grade.

Another great video as usual! What was the seeming escort you received at around 7:22 of the video?

+Zvi Bar-Chaim Thank you! It was road construction on the way up to Whitney Portal. The flagger guy said the whole road is getting redone. It's in need of repairs -- but I'm surprised it's a priority since it doesn't get a lot of traffic.
