RV Side Camera Review!

  • RV RearView Backup Cameras can be useful and now we have the option of easily adding side cameras to an RV. Today I share my experience with the side camera and where we have used them. I don't use them all the time or as much as the rear view camera but there have been a few times they have been very helpful and or convenient. They land in the column of occasionally useful and helpful but definitely not a must have.

    We had never had a need for a camera such as these, but we just purchased a new 42 ft rig and now the need is there.Just installed my new Haloview system on our new RV. I spent lots of time looking at reviews similar to this one before choosing the Haloview. One additional benefit of the Haloview RD7 is the ability to connect up to 4 cameras to the monitor. I do not recall if this is an option with the Furrion. I purchased the system with the rear camera, two side marker cameras and, for good measure, I purchased an additional camera to mount to the front of our tow vehicle. The Haloview’s ability to view all four cameras on screen simultaneously is another big feature in my book. I didn’t do an install video but if anyone is interested, I can provide some footage of the installed product with some explanations. Great review video and very accurate with respect to the Haloview system for sure.

    I have side and back up cameras and I love them. Like you said, the back up camera is great while driving because it gives me the same view as a regular rear view mirror. I have used these cameras to successfully back into sites. And in doubt I always use the concept of GOAL (Get out and Look). It is always best to be safe and double check even if it takes more time. Happy travels.

    Got the Furrion S Package, (came with four, two side maker/cameras, one over door [which I don’t know where most people put it, people put it, and the Sharkfin that is now pre-wired on most new trailers. But the extra one has the parking lines - green, yellow, red - and told the Sharkfin should go above entrance door. But sounds like you could use both on the back, but would need an extra on to go above the entrance door, but monitor only supports the 4 cameras. So suggestions would be great,p. I love the system over the Ford factory ones that would only turn 9n in reverse. It is nice to see when to pull over when passing someone. Thanks for the video…know spent extra $$$ but we’re easy to install, work well for a single person full timing and reduces number of times having to physically get out and look As Mark and Trish say GOAL - get out and look 👍

    I have the Haloview bakup camera and really like the picture on it. I looked into the side view cameras but in order to install them were the present marker lights are I don't think it would work as there is only about 3" of space between and front pass through doors and the front of the trailer. And to place them some were else I'd have to fill in the holes on the old marker lights and drill new holes for the cameras. So I'm still kicking the idea around if I really need these or not. Enjoy your programs. Happy Camping.

More than once my wife (directionally challenged and doesn't get the reaction lag on a 5th wheel) & I have been relationally drained from the stress in getting into tight spots. I'm also one who doesn't like to drill holes in my rig, so I've put it off. I didn't know the cameras could be installed in the hitch. I've always seen videos that showed someone drilling holes near the top of the back of the rig. If so, that might be the tipping point for me buying a system. Can you briefly explain how you mounted it down there? That would be super helpful!

      Thanks for the recommendation, that would have been a good point to add. I don’t like using them while on the hwy I prefer the camera view directly behind for lane changes and the mirrors for the side. I don’t care for the smaller multi camera view while driving and don’t want to press buttons for changing cameras while driving. For me I don’t really have any blind spots with the rear view camera and the use of the truck mirrors. I mainly switch to these in a parking/maneuvering situation when I can’t see the other side of the RV because of a sharp turn. But it would have been a good thing to add for those that might want to use it while on the hwy.

    I've heard of people bringing the monitor unit into their RV when in a camping spot so that they can use the cameras (especially the side-mount cameras) as pseudo-security cameras. Obviously, you would need to have continuous power to your running lights while parked in a site (theoretically unhooked from your truck), but it allows you to view the sides of the trailer in case someone approaches it (such as at night). Have you ever used your system like that?

      There is a connector you can use with your 7 pin that will power the marker lights. good for a boondocking situation, not so good in a park next to others

    I am intrigued by the Haloview system. I purchased a Furrion S7 with rear and side cameras a couple of years ago because I wanted to be able to monitor traffic beside and behind me. I DO NOT recommend the Furrion. The cameras are okay, but the monitor is so dark I cannot see it clearly.

    You didn't mention the use for security. I have my Haloview rear camera wired into a toggle switch instead of the rear lights.
    If I add the side cameras + a front view camera and wire them into the same switch, I could see all around the RV at night without having my parking lights left on.
    I have my Haloview mounted on my rearview mirror and put the dash mount inside the Camper, so I simply hook it up inside at night.

    Is there a version of this that works with Jayco's S.M.A.R.T. system? How would you secure them when storing the RV during off season? It looks like you can just dismount them because of the wiring.

    • @AllAboutRVs
      @AllAboutRVs  Před 2 lety +1

      Good question, I am not aware of cameras for the Jayco Smart system, I thought that was more for the lights, tank level, Ac, generator, tire pressure type of uses. These cameras I would not recommend taking off and should be left on for storage. They seal against the side of the RV and are held on with screws and connect into the 12v power.

    • @chomp54321
      @chomp54321 Před 2 lety

      @@AllAboutRVs The S.M.A.R.T. system would blink the side markers when you use the turn signal. Jayco actually provides separate wiring for side cameras, so that their power is not interrupted by the blinking lights. At 2:11 of the video, I see there are 4 wires spliced together to form two connections. Can the wires be separated so that the cameras' wires be connected to the Jayco's wiring set aside for side cameras?

    Do you have these cameras recording while driving? Also, where do you have your monitor in the truck while driving?
    I am in the process of purchasing my first travel trailer, a used no-frills one with no camera mounts. I am now starting my homework on rear and side camera systems, and would like the system to record all cameras while driving, in case of any accidents or insurance claims in the future. I would also like to use all of the cameras at times while driving, as you have done here.

      I keep the monitor in the strangest place. It is tilted up close to the floor below the radio. I don’t like anything cluttering the dash. It can record but I’m not a huge fan of the format. I have been considering getting a dash cam for that reason.

    What's your overall length? I tow a 34' Fifth wheel with a short bed truck and the RVS camera system I have on mine stinks! I've put extended booster antennas on both my rear camera an on the monitor and still looses signal with anything over 35mph. Is the video laggy or relatively " real time " ? I'm in the market for a camera that will work for sure, but I see these ones say max overall length is 30-38ft. The RVS system that our camper came with says 70' and doesn't work worth a hoot, some I'm skeptical at best! LOL

    • @Masterchief68
      @Masterchief68 Před 2 lety

      Don’t know about the halo system but my Furrion system is a plug in system and the side cameras are screwed into the side lights. Over a year old now and we camp once a month all year long (Florida) with absolutely no problems. Yes more expensive, but it’s extremely reliable and easy to install.

    • @AllAboutRVs
      @AllAboutRVs  Před 2 lety

      I know some areas are more prone to theft than others but I haven’t been concerned about these even in the rougher areas we have been. They would have to either destroy them to get them off or take them apart and unscrew them from the side of the RV. While that is possible I think it would be very rare to have them stolen. You could run wires higher up and mount them higher if wanted and they have cameras for the side that don’t have the marker light if wanted.
