  • In this video, I delve further into my landscape art projects, taking on the challenging and mesmerizing theme of Yellowstone's Grand Prismatic Spring. This piece was both an exhilarating and demanding endeavor, as I sought to capture the vibrant colors and intricate textures that define this natural wonder. To replicate the mineral buildup that forms in the springs, I experimented with using salt, adding a unique layer of authenticity to the artwork.
I would love to hear your thoughts on this piece and any suggestions you might have for my next project in the Landscape series.
The Grand Prismatic Spring is one of Yellowstone National Park's most iconic and awe-inspiring natural features. Located in the Midway Geyser Basin, it is the largest hot spring in the United States and the third-largest in the world. The spring is renowned for its strikingly vivid colors, which resemble a rainbow and are caused by microbial mats around the edges of the mineral-rich water.
Here are some key details about the Grand Prismatic Spring:
Size: It measures approximately 370 feet (112 meters) in diameter and is about 160 feet (50 meters) deep.
Colors: The vibrant colors range from deep blue in the center to greens, yellows, oranges, and reds along the edges. The blue center is due to the intrinsic blue color of the water, which is caused by the absorption of red wavelengths of light and the scattering of blue wavelengths. The outer colors are produced by different species of thermophilic (heat-loving) bacteria and algae, which thrive in various temperature zones around the spring.
Temperature: The water in the center of the spring is extremely hot, averaging around 160°F to 190°F (70°C to 88°C).
Formation: The Grand Prismatic Spring, like other hot springs in Yellowstone, is fed by heat from the magma beneath the Earth's crust. The water is heated underground and then rises to the surface, where it cools and spreads out in the large, circular pool.
This natural wonder not only attracts scientists and researchers who study its unique microbial life and geothermal activity but also captivates artists, photographers, and visitors from around the world who come to witness its extraordinary beauty.

Wow, how cool is that! Very well done! It was great to read about the Grand Prismatic, I've never heard of it.
If you feel like it, you could create some winter scenery sometime.
