Billie Eilish: “What Was I Made For?”, Barbie & Songwriting | Apple Music

- Interview recorded on Monday, July 10th in Los Angeles, CA
"Barbie" is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated movies of the year. At the end of last year, Finneas asked Billie Eilish to make a song for the movie after a conversation with Greta Gerwig and Mark Ronson. Now, the song, "What Was I Made For?" is ready to be released.
Billie Eilish and Zane Lowe sit down in the theater to discuss the making of her song, "What Was I Made For?", which was created specifically for the blockbuster of the summer, but is also somehow incredibly personal. Billie opens up about her experience being involved in the movie, her feelings about songwriting for film and TV, and the childhood connection to Barbie that makes this a "full circle" moment.

Love how she pulled out the little clothes that were a reference to her past music videos. Such a hit of nostalgia and I live for it. ❤️
I wish I could... but I just CAN'T watch it... ❤❤❤

it blows my mind that Billie is 21 and Finneas is 26. They are such wonderful artists. Their parents must be SO SO PROUD.
for being a part of this industry? i dont think so or they must be very ignorant!shes a total clown and she copies other artists shes just a fake product used by this industry not even herself!
What! Phineas is my age!??! He looks mid 30s
Paul McCartney was 22 when he wrote “Yesterday.” He was 28 when the Beatles broke up.
Zane Lowe BLOWS me away with every interview. He has a talent to converse with people and draw things out in them that simply can't be taught. His questions are well researched but more importantly, they're inspired. You can tell he's REALLY listening and connecting with the person he's interviewing in a way that's so genuine and comfortable, that you don't even remember it's an interview. It takes so much vulnerability and WISEDOM on his end to be able to do what he does.
if he's so "good" then why does he keep interrupting her?
he does a LOT of mirroring of his interviewees and i think it goes a long way towards making them comfortable which can feel less like an interview and more like a gentle therapy sesh with a good friend.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
It‘s so validating to hear that being uninspired for long periods of time and facing obstacles in your creative process is a thing that happens to other people too. Creativity really is not something that can be controlled. And it doesn’t undermine your abilities as an artist.
❤
Yep creativity is free flowing and our lives and the factors that influence also inform our creativity. The difference here is that a professional artist still has to mine and carve something out, even if they don’t feel inspired. I think with creativity it’s important to just keep going
When your ghostwriter is unhappy with you

Zane Lowe is FANTASTIC. I love watching any interview he does. He asks the right questions, makes artists feel safe, and allows them to be vulnerable and honest.
He's the best out there!
Absolutely love all his interviews, he’s amazing!
BILLIE W
Agreed!!!
He’s a walking cringeball 🤢
Billie is an artist in every sense of the word. She’s unapologetically herself and cares to want to know people. I would not surprised if the song wins her another Oscar.
i made a short film featuring this song by Billie. It is about leaving abusive people and places. I would be really grateful if you could watch it and give your opinion on it, i am a beginner at filmmaking 🖤!

Absolutely. Definitely goes down as one of her best ever.
My absolute favourite Billie song was “when the party’s over”, but “What Was I Made For?” took the first spot.
I am in constant awe of her and she just keeps getting better .

This song hits so hard - she so perfectly describes feeling that constant existential dread that comes with depression, when you so frequently question life and what your purpose is - pairing it with a powerful video that captures the feeling of when you're little and try to play with Barbie a certain way but then things go wrong and you feel so out of control, and then tying that in to the message of the movie of the biggest struggle of life; trying to figure out who you are.
Okay ... You're almost there - now think Jeffrey Epstein.

They are so insanely talented. Like it’s one thing to create art without restrictions, writing about break ups, etc. But Greta showed them the movie and asked them to come up with a song - and they managed to create this?? Something that totally fits the specific Barbie plot WHILE also personal to Billie?? I am impressed by these people’s creativity and skills.
The melody is so Billie and it works so beautifully well in the movie when played with the montage about moments in life. So touching. Now whenever I play this song I want to cry
i agree with you, Billie is so talented. i made a short film featuring this song by her. It is about leaving abusive people and places. I would be really grateful if you could watch it and give your opinion on it, i am a beginner at filmmaking ❤️🩹
Oscar winning potential. I love this song so much.
Oh, yes!! Such a beautiful song
And fast forward!
And she got an Oscar’s!
It baffles me that Billie is only 21, and she made a whole career for herself with her brother, but she’s not even 25 yet, and she can literally put a greatest hits out. She has so much time ahead of her, and can’t wait to see what will happen next in her career. She is just so naturally talented as her brother is, and it’s only been 5 years since her first album came out. That’s just crazy.
She and her brother are truly some of the most talented songwriters of this generation
i love how natural this interview is. it’s so refreshing to see him and billie just have a conversation. they are both so incredibly inspiring
How does someone manage to look 40 and 20 at the same time and still look absolutely fabulous
when i heard that lyric "I used to float, now I just fall down " all I saw was Barbie floating out of her dreamhouse. it's perfect
I'm glad that they're still interviewing with Zane. He was one of the first music critics who interviewed Billie and Finneas and actively boosted their music.
I’m amazed at Billies wisdom at her age, and I’m 71. I love her music.
I'm 52 and love her music too. Billie's an old soul.
I’m 51. My daughter is 12 and, like Billie, has Tourette Syndrome. Not only am I amazed by her insane talent and crazy beautiful voice, I am incredibly grateful that she is open about having TS. It has given my daughter such relief to see a celebrity cope with it.
“Things can age without aging poorly“ is so true. Things, people can change completely but that doesn’t mean they were bad before.
Zane and billies dynamic is so amazing to watch, the way they relay off of each other is so relaxed and authentic, we love to see the genuine connection between interviewer, interviewee, but also as friends 🩷🩷
It's literally...what he does for a living... Lol
I could see her with a guy like that.
@@RaymondRAYCE yeah , but the point is that he does his job well
I covered what was I made for? and I'd love if you checked it out thx! :)
i didn't how he kept leading her responses by making statements about what he assumed she thought or felt and just expected her to agree with him
Feeling like you don't know how to be happy or just forgot, but also knowing that you maybe can be if you figure out what your purpose is - she describes depression so beautifully.
She's SO getting another Oscar.
As a woman who played with Barbie as a kid, and then grew to experience the different nuances of life, then becoming a mother to a daughter This song hit me hard. Paired with the scenes in the movie, sitting with my stepmom and daughter, I was in tears in the theater 😭
Right?! At period time, we were the carefree little girls with Barbies in our hands and dreaming about everything. But next, we have our own daughters to buy a Barbie for. Feels like we are very different now. Deep down, we are still the same gleeful little girls.
i swear she keeps releasing music at the right time every single time
she’s just so real. i love her.
Oh my god. When her song played on those theater speakers during that scene in Barbie…I BAWLED.
This song perfectly encapsulates the feeling of being a woman and not just that-the feeling of being a human that Barbie touches on. Here we have all of these expectations and pressures and too often I'm left questioning what exactly is it that im made for. What barbie taught me is that maybe the point is that im not made for any thing particularly, except the experience of real life
I sometimes hear this from men too. I think we all find that we question ourselves and why we are hwre

So, I watched the movie, stunning, didn't hear the song, or at least, it was on my periphery. I saw the live video floating around CZcams and was piqued, but still didn't hit me. I start watching this video and stopped to watch Billie's official video. It has completely overwhelmed me. I'm too old for this, but it still hits like a ton of bricks. Came back to listen to the process. Thank you Apple Music for the great interview.
She should create a concept album writing from the perspective of characters or moments in movies she relates to and call it mirrorball or motion capture.

I don't know how to describe this feeling, but observing her during this interview, I can imagine how she will be in 5, 10, 20 years
I’m 100% sympathetic about how we can’t control creativity/inspiration so I’ll wait how many years is needed to hear her third project cuz I just know I’ll love it. I can’t lie… I was super excited thinking we would have an album this year but this song is SO good I’ll hold on to it for now.

What a great interview. I’m a 54 year old man, but I love Billie. She’s just so good. I admire who she is as a person as well as her music. Finneas is also amazing. I really appreciate Zane Lowe’s ability to interview her in a very thoughtful, insightful way.
Zane is such an incredible interviewer. He prioritises his guests being comfortable and this whole interview with billie is so natural and open, he sparks truly passionate and honest conversation
I’m bedridden due to health and I put this song on my bed when I’m going crazy with pain and I fall asleep. I’m like a baby and this song stops the cycle of physical pain. Thank you 🙏🏼
She is so grown and confident. I love to see it. So so proud of her

is my first and only artist I can give a genuine answer saying I love her and no bs when I tell ppl who’s my favorite music artist!💛💛💛
I completely agree
Wow, now knowing it’s about how she feels, the lyrics “Turns out i’m not real, just something you paid for” hits even harder ⚡️ 😩
Bille is a genius. To think she is so young. Her brother Finneas as well. It's so inspiring.
When Finneas and Billie write for film, true alchemical magic happens. My favorites of theirs are always from film. 🙌🏽 This one takes the cake. 2nd Oscar on the way.
It's interesting to hear her perspective on what barbie was to her as a girl. She says that as a kid she didn't really think about how barbie was setting a beauty standard she wasn't part of. But as a little Asian girl in America in the 80s I did. I often felt a vein of resentment towards barbie and all dolls at the store, blonde was always the main product line with variations being brunette, and I resented that. I enjoyed barbie dolls and the fashions and the hair, it was decadent, but I wasn't white and dolls reminded me of that daily, and I thought I might never be as pretty as barbie.
I'm glad this movie came out to help round out for society everything that barbie has touched on through the years. She's a toy and a fashion icon and a role model and a cautionary tale all in one. 👱♀️
Interesting, I never noticed that as much. I grew up in Russia and ot me Barbie signified a princess, nothing more. A celebration and a dream. And the fact that I didn't look like her didn't matter to me. I guess to each their own and each child internalized differently
That's what inspiration is! Every poem I've ever written the words just came and made no sense in the moment, then i went back and read and they were exactly how I felt. It's beautiful to hear her talk about this.
Give this woman an Oscar and a Grammy 💖
Then all she will need is an Emmy and a Tony and she will be an EGOT winner. (But that will take some time. I wouldn’t expect that until Billie’s 30s)
You are aware she already has one gold fellow and 4 grammaphones on a shelf.
the trouble with knowing her so young is i'm watching this like she growing up soooo quick
The intro made me tear up. That song is exactly how I feel right now too. I am 23, just finished school and everything feels so up in the air. I keep praying for God to guide me to what I was "made for" and I am waiting as I try so many new things hoping something sticks. I know what I like, generally what I want, bur it also feels like I don't.
Try to breathe and enjoy life. I used to feel like you. I wish so much I hadn’t worried about everything.
I’m 42 now, diagnosed with a rare cancer that is incurable and painful to treat. I wish I could go back to my 20s and 30s when I had dreams and possibilities.
The fact that you feel everything is up in the air shows that you have many possibilities which is a good thing. Not a bad thing.
Oh, sweet one. You've come so very far already and really good things await. Just put one foot in front of the other, do the next right thing, and allow yourself grace. And laughter. Good, while food. You've got this, love.
I rarely finishes an interview, and this has been the one that I have for the past couple of years. Billie's thought process and her love to her craft is something else
I remember when Ruth said take my hands close your eyes now feel and this song played I literally started bawling crying cause I felt like it was her saying feel your emotions and let them out . I suffer with terrible anxiety and have to take medication for it that when I heard this song it was like billie said everything I was feeling ( like Billie said it was exactly how she felt , it’d also how I feel ) dealing with stress and anxiety daily it’s like I forgot how to be happy and I don’t know how to deal with the anxiety of everyday life etc . This song is sung so beautifully it’s perfect and it was perfect for the barbie movie. This song really struck a chord deep for me and still to this day makes me emotional. She’s a great artist and this is my favourite Billie Ellis’s song to date

Yes, but she is still not happy … unfortunately with age , you also learn how to pretend you are happy, which as a teenager you can't because you don't have enough inner strength to do it, as an adult you live with it.. but she in this period of life feels drowned and lost and not happy and it’s normal in your early 20s especially after that huge success when she was just a kid

I hear/watch this song & my eyes & heart explode with emotions ....it's my life. I may be Billle's oldest (66) obsessively deeply heartfelt admirer for all the reasons since Ocean Eyes. As a retired jazz/classical pianist-turned teacher, and ex-singer (Carole King mostly) unable to perform in college & coffeehouses at 20 yrs old with new, crippling anxiety & depression that became debilitating. In 70s we/they knew NOTHING about treatment, guided meditation, mindfulness, deep breathing, refocusing, CBT, there was no CBD, ketamime etc etc.
the way zane and billie conversate with eachother is so perfect like they both have similar ways of thinking and are able to understand and relay off eachothers thoughts

Beautiful song and video rife with themes of identity, self-doubt, and the pressure of expectations. The lyric "I'm not real, just something you paid for" paired with the way she examines and reflects on each outfit seems like an introspective exploration of her own identity; as if the various stages and eras throughout her career have compromised or confused her authentic sense of self, and she desperately wants to reclaim it. As if she feels more like a product than a person. My take is the tremor, wind and rain seem like outside forces and an environment trying to prevent her journey of self-discovery. To me, her picking up the wreckage and leaving speaks to her fight to reclaim her sense of self, leaving the obstacles behind in the pursuit of happiness. Such a beautiful, haunting and ethereal song.
You can't write about someone or something if you don't understand how they feel or have been through it yourself. That shows. This is an awesome interview!

When he mentions he line, 'Something you paid for' and goes on to say, 'You have to acknowledge there are different types of love' that was just like a hammer hitting an anvil moment for me, ringing out in perfect clarity. I'm currently dealing with a situation in my life and it's exactly this. It's not fandom, but sometimes the relationship between parent and child is very much this. A parent will love unconditionally, but for a child, even when they become young adults, it's still transactional, to a point. Especially when that child has very specific special needs or a diagnosis that feeds the dependency dynamic.
Billie’s duality between angsty, rebellious ballads and soothing, more-vulnerable compositions is what highlights her songwriting talents. We’re here for that. 💯
