Rebecca Lobo in 1996, Diana Taurasi in 2004, Candace Parker in 2008 and Breanna Stewart in 2016 It’s not just about Marketing it’s about growing the game, can’t believe they don’t have any players 26 or younger on the team, that means in the next Olympics we won’t have a player on the team under 30 with any Olympic experience… I would add 2-3 younger players to the team… Old heads need to step back and let the younger ones shine
Did they attend all the Olympic practices while making deep ncaa tournament runs?
US women’s basketball team is in the same position as US women’s soccer for how old the team is relative to younger players.
@@dukelombardi4565dude it doesn’t matter. They are going to win gold regardless. Not All 12 players will play. Teams have an 8-10 man rotation during games. 2-3 younger, more popular players grows the game and revenue
All of those players won national championships before they were drafted & chosen to be apart of the USA team. Caitlin Clark actually had 2 chances to win a title, & lost twice.
@@TWIZZTHEWHIZKID I don’t think Caitlin winning a ncaa tournament would make her more accepted by the roster.
@@dukelombardi4565 That's not the point, & that's not a fact either... it's what you think. It isn't about her being accepted to the roster, it's about her not even making the team.
Ok, Monica, you can say that “The basketball of it all is so important,” and that CC should be left off Team USA. But then you cannot ever complain about how little money WNBA players earn. It’s either a business, or it’s not. For pure basketball, anyone can go to a playground and compete for free. If you want more money in the industry for the players, announcers, commentators, etc, then you need to grow the business. Leaving CC off the team is fine from a pure basketball perspective, and a terrible decision for anyone who wants to grow the business of women’s basketball.

Here’s the Problem with the Current WNBA league..
The Veteran Players don’t want to accept the fact that they NEED Caitlin Clark to build their Brand!!!
Something that they haven’t been able to do for the last 20yrs…

Its disrespectful for not adding a elite scorer in Arike
Arike said on Nightcap that she withdrew her name because she knew they were not going to pick her. She said politics involved.
True
Turassi? Came in 2004? And which year did the wnba make a profit since then?
I Checked.....NEVER ONCE
What year did the NBA make a profit? What about Amazon-Tesla do tell? Most Corporations don’t make a profit for years. Why do you think most go public on the stock market? To raise money for their non profitable business. Your argument is a non argument. Btw it was over 30 years before the NBA started to profit. And that’s because they started to allow black men to play let’s bffr
@@YouAREyoubeYouare you joking? No company has ever gone 27 years with no profit. None zero. The reason why the wnba isn't gone is because the NBA pays the millions and millions in shortfalls every year. Even with Clark which has boosted revenue over 33% they are still 50 million short this year.
i can't stand this lady
@@YouAREyoubeYou I've been seeing your comments on a few posts....Im a black man, and a CC fan....Nevertheless thank you for intellegently speaking to reality and coming with knowledge...You are a strong voice like Monica
With Arike being the only exception cause she is box office as well
Don’t complain about money, when your ego gets in the way of the business.
Don't complain about championships when your lust for money gets in the way of winning. It goes both ways. Money comes with championships. This is why the NBA is a mess. They've traded talent for betting, popularity, and money.
@@serenityking9333tell that to Lisa Leslie when she was complaining women don't get paid and don't get the endorsements and ratings.
@nicktolentino8250 You missed the point. Leslie has been in the game and has earned the right to complain. This argument is about Caitlin Clark bringing in views for the Olympics. My first cousin played for the WMBA, so I know they aren't paid like the NBA, like my 2nd cousin-in-law, who played for the NBA. As a fan of Caitlin Clark, people want to push her into the lion's den for "their" egos, not hers. The bandwagon fans will push CC into a decline for trying to force something on her that she's not ready for. Let her be great and get off her back for self-gratification.
@serenityking9333 lisa had the audacity to ask draymond green and NBA players to pay their salaries. We can agree to disagree but viewership matters. No one cared about the wnba until this rookie class came into the league. THEY brought in their fan base. The league needs them more than they need the league. CC being a part of the Olympics would definitely help everyone get paid cause get what, bigger media coverage. Think the bigger picture. If you had CC, Reese and Brink on the Team, imagine how much ratings that would get. Not like they will play big minutes but the upside outweighs the downside. Some of those players need to step aside anyway.
@nicktolentino8250 I agree. This rookie class has brought eyes to the WNBA. I love this class! As a fan of the NBA and WNBA, I have to say the WNBA has been much more pleasurable to watch. I'm just saying they are putting too much pressure on CC. She is starting to look lazy a bit or tired; get the turnovers down a bit and work on defense. Those international players aren't going to give her a break because she's America's face of the WMBA now. Team USA WNBA has been winning the gold frequently. What would happen if they suddenly put CC on the team and they lost? See what I'm saying? If they win, it's just another win, but if they fail with CC on the team, then what? I want CC to win. If she will do it, she can do it with or without being on the Olympic team. That's just my opinion, though. I'm still rockin' with the rookies.
Melo missed the Mero joke about Caitlin coming and saying “I wasn’t out there” 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 That was Melo in 04
Come on Melo, from marketing it's the worst decision ever, lol
Olympics should always be about earning your spot based on merit. Not a poplularity contest. I swear some of yall thinking this is the wnba all star game.

And yeah im sure they could win either way but fyi, in Fiba wualifying gamr vs belgium earlier this yr they won on a buzzer beater by Stewart. And i guess Belgium was without a couple starters. Idk who was all on Team USA but close call. And there are at least a couple intl teams with several wnba players on it(im guessing australia has the most).
Ego's are so high they don't care about growing the game globally.
I know it's ridiculous
Facts!
The game has already been global. Jordan, Magic, Bird and even 1996 Women Team USA took the game/Basketball Global.
Also all the International Players in the NBA and WNBA made the game Global. People support those from their country
@@truthiscensored the WNBA is not global. Americans don’t watch it. They haven’t had one year that turned a profit.
Dumbest comment ever. Are you kidding? Ive heard so many players say they are grateful for the new eyeballs...but they also arent gonna roll out the red carpet..every player has to earn their repsect and place. And the womens game is still young. People act like they should be close to nba. When bird and magic came into league(35 yrs after it was formed), franchises were losing money, ratings and attendence werent good at all. Wnba got their Bird(Clark) and Magic(Reese) moment 28ish yrs after it started. And the league(lile every league) takes time to grow and for the product to be good. Its good, a lot of casuals didnt try to come to the league much earlier, cuz the talent pool(product) wasnt as deep and good overall. And they wouldve left and hard to get them back. As the game grows and more and more girls been playing the talent pool gets greater. Its perfect timing, cuz the talent of the youngns in college and HS is taking a huge leap at this moment.
I'm a CC fan with a pretty middle-ground opinion on the Team USA thing. I can see how it was wild for her to be left off the team, and I can see how it would have been terrible for everyone (including her) if she'd been put on it. Lose-lose, in a way. But the best angle I've heard is not the 'marketing' angle everyone is copy-pasting. It came from basketball legend Nancy Lieberman.
She said the merit angle is kinda fake when you look at all of the past teams and even the current team to a certain extent (🔎Arike?). The real angle, according to her, is 'keeping one eye to the future'. And I like that take. Nearly every basketball legend I have read or listened to has said that CC will go down in the books one day, given time. Plenty of WNBA players think so. She is seen as the future face of the W, the same way DT or Lisa Leslie was. Maybe even more so.
Lieberman says you send Caitlin to the Olympics not to help win right now, but because she needs to see what it's about. She needs to learn from the greats, understand what right looks like. When she goes back in 4 years, 8 years-once she's reached her final form-she'll have that experience to draw from. She'll be a much better teammate and future leader on the world stage. If you think CC is a future great who will definitely be a perennial all-star and a future Team USA selection, it's a solid argument. If you think it's all hype and she's trash, then this argument won't impress you either. But I like it.
Yes the narrative of her earning it is disingenuous. Half of these players are jealous.
They are not… what are they jealous of. People keep throwing that around.. what are they jealous of? Her looks? Her ability? Because she hasn’t won a championship? Her boyfriend? Because of her racist weird fans? Her instagram followers? Because people want her to be the face of the league and call her the goat that average 15 points per game and 7 turnovers? Because she’s marketable to people that look like her who are the majority of America by population?
Imo. Its not that hate or jealous of her. It's that they hate all the hype that is round her. She came into the league with a bus load of hype around her and that's what all the hate and jealousy is about

Great conversation about this topic, loved it. It’s refreshing after hearing so much other stuff on the internet about this.
The fact that it’s such a big story that she’s NOT on the team is the clear reason she should be on the team. @@truthiscensored of course stats matters. Why would you put out terrible shooting and turnover if it doesn’t? 😁 let’s put things into perspective. CC is a rookie. Shooting percentage and turnover can be corrected. Part of the adjustment. What’s important is she’s able to translate her game into the league.
She has a long way to go. her shooting percentage is horrible and she plays 0 defense. and the 4+ turnovers every game is unheard of. team USA should be the last thing on her mind
Ya'll need to make Monica McNutt a regular - Melo and Monica are great together and lived the life!!! Mero gets a little goofy.
I feel what Melo and Monica saying BUT let’s not act like it hasn’t been done before in the Olympics for the original Dream Team Magic Johnson was out the league and Bird was barely playing. Neither of those guys was at the top of the league at the time but it didn’t matter because they knew they was winning no matter what and they was trying to market the game. People saying oh well she has time to make the team and yea she does but will she still be as hot as she is right now a few years things change and they just reported losing 50 mil again so they missed a big opportunity to try and grow the game while the iron is hot
Apple to oranges. Bird and Magic were vets and had paid their dues to the game.
ppl keep mentioning magic and bird, who literally had each won multiple mvps and championships by then, AND the fact that that would be the last realistic opportunity to have them participate in the olympics. barring catastrophic injury, clark will have a chance in 4 years. and if she's not as hot in 4 years it'll be bc she just wasn't that good (think jimmer), so ppl can take the opportunity to focus on other players who actually are good (like arike, who's mentioned in this video).
the 'losing 50 mill' thing is just business-speak. half of the nba teams claim they're losing money every year, yet they keep the team. you can't take any of those conversations seriously (plenty of businesses lose money, like uber, etc.), they're just used to defend whatever point they wanna make at that time
@@TheRulersBack18 it wasn’t about their last opportunity to win a gold medal it was about them being the most marketable. Isaiah Thomas and Dominque Wilkins both were better players at the time. Man kiss my a** wit all this merit & camaraderie garbage. Here is the meaning of the word - Camaraderie is a feeling of trust and friendship among a group of people who have usually known each other for a long time or gone through some kind of experience together. Rebecca Lobo in 1996, Diana Taurasi in 2004, Candace Parker in 2008 and Breanna Stewart in 2016 were selected to the damn team so how did CAMARADERIE hurt all 4 women when the reason Clark didn't make it was because she is a rookie.
Also as of yesterday Caitlin Clark is on the USA team due to Brittney Griner being removed from the team.
They talk about CC like she's getting a leg up because of her fans . The lady can hoop just as well as all the other ladies plus she's a better representative of female sports than all these Women. FACTS!
Well said Melo. People need to calm down and be patient with CC. Enjoy the process/journey to greatness and the growth of this young lady. We have to get out of this instant gratification idea and embrace the whole nothing is worth while if you don’t truly earn or put in the work. CC has a little more work to do that is all. Work on being more physical and having ladies play her physical and work on her handle. She shouldn’t be getting ripped as often she does. Be patient folks.
Melo is saying what most men are saying she’s not the best but marketing wise she is..I’m tired of hearing the wnba saying they not making money..the nba needs to cut them loose
Everyone on both sides of the argument is talking about CC. All CC is doing is just playing basketball.
CC been in a crazy slump lately...they took her out her game
And they took her out the game against a 10-1 team and the same team that beat Reese shortly after. Those teams are already set and have their chemistry vs these rookies that haven't had time to gel. They just came from college playoffs.
The WNBA players better not EVER complain about no charter flights and low wages again. They remind me of Yassar Arafat, who never missed an opportunity to miss an opportunity. Caitlin Clark seems to be a level headed person who would know why she would be the 12tth woman on that roster and what her role was. She would accept it because it would be in the best long term interests of women's basketball. The plain truth of the matter is that the 12 best collegiate players in the U.S. would still win the gold in Paris. The only difference is that the average winning margin per game would be 20 instead of 30.
But why would Monica agree that Melo was talented enough to be on the '04 team, isn't Caitlin currently more talented than DT?
Funny THING about all MARKETING talk…The Olympians DONT GET PAID
It's not about getting paid (the Gold, Silver, and Bronze medalists actually do get paid). It's about increasing the viewership of the Olympics visibility of these women. CC is the draw, the tv, attendance and viewing numbers have been proven to increase when she's involved. The women have won 7 gold's in a row, and no one cares. It's been 30+ years and this is the most the USA women team has been talked about.

Diana the Dinosaur is there for a lifetime achievement award, irony much?
Caitlyn is very talented; are you saying she can't adjust to the situation. Common people she broken the college scoring record so that is not enough ? She hasn't practiced with the team ? Are those 12 members original team mates and by replacing one of them would completely ruin the entire team so we have to pity those who came before her really. We have to remember basketball is a sport and in sports you have to showcase the best; ONLY THE BEST especially the Olympics.
If this was about merit Isaiah and Dominque would have been on the Dream Team instead of Bird and Magic. This is about exposure for a league that believes it deserves more attention. Clark’s presence brings attention to women’s basketball that has never been seen before and it should have carried over into the Olympics. Also, if Clark is on the team the vets get to influence the future of the league as a teammate instead of an adversary.

They say of Caitlin Clark ‘she’s just not there yet’… Oh she’s there. And she’s miles, even light years ahead of the others. People talk about ‘marketing’ and ‘merit’.
By the numbers Caitlin Clark games get vs the numbers the others get, does that not factor into ‘merit’? The WNBA/Olympics are associations, they are not sports. They are associations made up of sport(s) but they are associations first. They are businesses first, second and then the sport is maybe a distant third.
In business, it’s how many eye-balls, how many purchases, how much revenue that matters in regards to ‘merit’. The simple truth is that Caitlin Clark by ‘merit’ is light years ahead of ANY other player in WNBA history and leaving her off the team is a mistake. But it’s not a deadly mistake. They will only lose out on millions of dollars and 4 years of possibly growing the game. But that’s ok.
if its not about marketing and always about merit then why was Bird on the Dream Team? Bird was at the end of his career, had a bad back, he barely played and oh he retired after the Olympics. Bird did not belong on that team, he was no longer him. He was strictly there for his name aka marketing. Same with Magic, he wasnt even playing in the league and made the team with his condition. Now im not saying CC is Bird or Magic but there are plenty of examples of players either being rookies (mens and womens) and making the team or just making the team for marketing their name. Chelsea Gray has a spot on the team and hasnt played ALL year ijs
easy discussion even fr the players themselves. set aside everything and just answer this question.
DO YOU WANNA GET PAID MORE? yes, step aside. done
No matter what you say, they should have let CC try out and see if she could earn a spot; instead, they just completely said screw her. That’s the real issue, it’s a bad look and just another reason out of many that I don’t care about the WNBA 😂
The smartest thing they could have done was to bring Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark and let them play together and show Unity that would have changed everything to see them on the cover of any Sports magazine together as teammates but some people just don't get it
Cant wait for CC to be the captain and select her team in the 2024 All-Star Game! It’s likely to be the most competitive All-Star event, with everyone eager to get in on the action.🎉 also to spice up All Star, they will do Team USA versus selected WNBA all stars
Look at how the NBA players viewed Victor Wembanyama and compare it to how Caitlin is being received by women. It looks like the notion that women mature faster than men is no true when it comes to basketball players.
All those women who made the team are way more popular than Caitlin in Paris. They dgaf abt Caitlin in Paris. Unlike here, they support women's sports overseas.
Marketing and talent of Caitlin is phenomenal don't you get it she's the best scoring lady that there has been
I want to ask Monica if your standing outside of a large forest and a tree falls do you hear it? The W is like a forest now no one was going into your forest now Caitlin has caused a forest fire that you can’t ignore.
If you put Angel Reese, Caitland Cordova on the team you can beat anyone.
It's not about olympic experience...it's your basketball skills and can you compete at the highest level which she can and they have plenty of time to develop chemistry. They will feed off each other's energy raising the frequency/level
Diana was a rookie her first year without trying out because she was busy winning. And also the current team can mentor at least 2 to 3 rookies this yr.
she moves jo needle she shouldn’t be going no more
If the WNBA and Olympics committee did not have an agreement to put 1 NCAA women's player on the team, then no Rookie should make the team based on NCAA achievements.
The reason College players played on Dream Team and Team USA men was they have an agreement for at least 1 NCAA player to be on the team
The thing is CC is better than half that roaster
Out of the other dudes that brought their take on Caitlin not making it. Big Homie Melo had the best & most honest perspective.
We are listening to you guys now because of Caitlin before her nobody was watching the WNBA !! She is bringing the eyes to the game and now we can see what the W is about !!
Pettiness , jealousy , racism as their best !! So unfair treatment !!
The idea that "The US Olympic Team is DOMINANT!" is what we said in 1988 and 2004. How did that work out? It's time to let go of American Arrogance in this discussion. The worst thing is when Carmelo Anthony is saying this, since he failed to win gold.
We also need to stop assuming that Clark being on the US Women's Olympic Team would make a significant difference in marketing or revenue for the next few years. For a month, maybe. Then the Fever miss the playoffs, and we stop caring about the Olympics.
The women play international basketball between WNBA seasons, Clark will get the experience before 2028.
Melo: "Nobody's thinking, you've got to earn your way, ..." [5:15] Except one person has said that: CAITLIN CLARK.
Right now, this is not about competition or business, this is about sports media and social media simps complaining that their Princess is not playing.
The difference between Taurasi in 2004 and Clark in 2024 is that Taurasi came from a college team system which was similar to the Olympic Team system. Clark is playing The Steph Curry Way, while the Olympic Team is playing pre-Curry basketball.
its not Caitlin’s fault that something’s are just landing on her lap ( the Universe has given to her for a reason ) but as a result some are flipping out…now if you notice CC hasn’t complained about anything whatsoever..she is humble in all of her answers and very smart and articulate and she is very aware that she has to earn it .
I respect that women who want CC to earn their spot. And I respect that people want to see the game grow.. long term this is a win
Caitlin brings her fans with her 10 million of them more than the WNBA shes like Taylor Swift and if you get in her whey those fans will crush her enemies 😮
There is only one person speaking freely on this panel, take a guess who it is....😂😂
If they had tried to placate the so-called casual fans by saying CC needs rest or that there is a plan for her and other rookies to elevate the game just not now, many people would have accepted it. But to insinuate that shes a marketing gimmick and hasnt earned the spot basketball wise(her stats suggest otherwise), they alienate the "casual" fans who you actually need
No, because it's not fair to those who committed to going to every practice and was cut.
My gripe on this is 1) they make it like Caitlyn is a scrub and cant play on an Olympic team, 2) like the future is written and after 4 yrs is still that hot and popular....
Its a missed opportunity
We talk about earned the spot did Diana earned is back in 2004 no she won 3 championships and a rookie , Caitlin is the all time d1 leading scorer that broke a 50 year record
The largest public business blunder I’ve witnessed.
Don't know why Melo seems so dejected saying it's about the business now. What have WNBA players been complaining about for years, better pay. Caitlin and others in her rookie class have brought their college fan base with them to the W which has increased attendance and viewership which increases revenue for everyone. That's what these vets supposedly want. But don't get it twisted, these aren't new WNBA fans, these are these new players fans following them. The same way the new players have to earn the respect of the old heads in the league, the old heads have to earn the respect of new fans who didn't come to see them
The problem is the WNBA needs the marketing. The NBA men don’t. They are already getting paid. This is what the woman failed to see. Get your money. This is a perfect opportunity to grow the game globally and increase the advertising marketing and sponsors.
I’m going to watch team USA just like I did the last 8 times. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Like it or not..she's the Larry byrd of the wnba...she's gonna make the sport popular..should have put her on..us women wouldn't lose if you stuck 5 high-school girls as the last 5 players. Sports are marketing..without the money professional sports don't exist
Taurasi, Steward, Parker make the Olympic in their rookie season. Other women they earn it in there way to the Olympic. They bring USA 7 cold medals and famous. The question is why they complain about unfair pay. Because nobody watched them play. A lot of people find out on the sports new. But CClark she can change that put the eyeballs on the team bring the cold medal and bring a big paycheck for all of them. The world will watch the WNBA for sure. And they can thank CClark for that for
The other women despite being better than CC from a basketball sense are just boring to watch but no one wants to talk about the quality of the product
If the United States women's basketball don't win gold this year trust me everyone's going to talk about it and I'm going to laugh so hard😂😂😂😂😂😂.
I hope she can go to France to watch the games. She will outshine the whole tournament You go girl. The rest of the world is watching, rooting for you
I'm sure the women's US Olympics teams winning ways hasn't been totally because of their dominance. I'm sure it's a combination of their team being good. And the rest of the country's being sub-par.
Carmelo, the USA Olympics team needs to play the best ladies from the WNBA and cc must be on the starting WNBA side.
They are thinking from an emotional standpoint instead of logical. We don’t wanna hear no more complaints about growing the game when you guys had an opportunity to do so and chose not to even though there’s no chance of losing gold either way it’s clear jealousy taking place
So what y’all saying is she didn’t earn it?? Did Diana earn it?
Marketing is powerful, if u ahead by 20, let herplay
Yooo the irony is mad!! This lady only on here because of this player!! 😂😂😂
The annoying thing is that women keep complaining about viewership. If ya'll don't want to shine on Caitlyn thats fine, but then STOP complaining about viewership. We told you what we want to watch as viewers, if you don't want to give us what we want, thats fine, but stop crying about sexism when we don't watch.
Branding still matters, because the Olympics success has never trickled down to the WNBA
Invest in your future. Having CC on the team does not have to be about marketing. It's about giving somebody you see as the future getting that experience. Learning from these vets makes her that much better. Everyone wants to go to marketing but we losing the bigger picture
An NBA Veteran in Diana Taurasi and A couple of other veterans in that situation would allow The younglings to take it to the next level. WNBA are being petty as hell. they should allow Cardozo, Caitlin Clark, and Andrew Reese to play instead of Brittney griner, Diana Turasi, and the player that's injured and hasn't seen any game this season
Y’all got it wrong CC SHOULD HAVE MADE IT
there's a lot of way to earn it. she worked hard thru out her career, shes humble, skilled, unique talent, people's choice... SHE EARNED IT... WNBA have to listen and accept change... 😢😮😅
The part the women players keep forgetting is this is a business and they want to be paid like the men so why would a billionaire spend millions and not make billions back ???? That’s bad business and Clark brings in the new fans that will bring in that money so the other players can get more money when their contracts come up. After cutting your own bottom line then out that same mouth say you deserve the same kind of money the men get how does that make sense ?
McNutt is arrogant and stubborn. In this discussion there was no acknowledgement to CC's talent as a reason to be on the team just marketing. DT got the nod at 22 correct? There is precedent. It ain't like they are gonna lose a game, seriously lets get with the future of women's basketball and acknowledge the overwhelming noise. Let's break down the worthiness of a couple those who did make the team. Griner: few games played this season, anti-american, there is a lot of people who have no interest in this person representing their country. McNutt is a spokes person for the old school mentality that wants to keep a certain profile on this team and refuses to recognize reality. Imagine if Caitlyn played and she DOES have international experience, and actually did well?? OMG We would never be able to control her.
Imagine the global eyes that CC would bring to the wnba, it could help revenue growth and in turn will also help wnba veterans that has 4 years left for their careers. a lot could happen in 4 years, that is why i think this is the best time to take advantage of that.
