Let's be clear. The issue is tipping. We need to make it illegal. They should be paid. Always. Transparently. Not up to the fucking whim of a high person ordering a single slice of cake from across NYC.
We need regulation. Stop recommending tips. That puts the blame on the clients, which will never fix the issue. It only makes the corporations have wiggle room to abuse their employees.
This. Tipping should never be expected, a living wage should. Leveraging customer guilt to subsidize criminally low wages takes pressure off employers to change.
I agree tipping is terrible, but NOT tipping someone out of protest isn't what is going to make it go away. It's just going to screw over the tipped worker. We need to push for legislation to outlaw tipped work/ close the loopholes in the minimum wage law. while we do that, we need to tip people. When the legislation gets passed and enacted, THAT is when you can stop tipping people.
The problem is still not tipping but exploitative business models where workers get less pays when they get tips.
Tips were supposed to show appreciation for the workers and should never have been a part of what the business counts for workers' wages.
But for some reason that is acceptable and the ones showing appreciation is now the bad guys? If you ask me, that's identifying the wrong problem.
It's getting even worse. Apparently some restaurant will cut payment processing fee (about 3%) from tips. So uhh pay cash.
@@amberallen7809 The problem is that tipped workers won't be on your side when pushing for legislation to outlaw tipped work unless you stop tipping. Not tipping is the only way in which regular people can push for fair wages.
Tipping is not something I like when I visit the US… the employer should pay their server, delivery driver, or cashier a fair wage.. the customer shouldn’t be expected to cover that. Seems ridiculous.
I was very surprised he said that with no disclaimer.
Unfortunately "employers should" is dead in the US - so if you don't tip, they don't get paid.
So you definitely should tip when going there - as the only ones getting hurt by you not tipping, are the people who have the lowest wages!
I've made it a habit to tip around 20% when I'm in the US. If it's a very large bill I might go as low as 15%, but it's rare - if the service has been horrible and they haven't excused it, I have on a very few occasions gone as low as 10%, and if the service has been above and beyond, as high as around 25%
I have on a very few occasions even tipped nearly 30%.
At home I only tip when the service has been above and beyond what can be expected - but here we have living wages and no one depends on tips to make it!
I live here in China and tipping is not acceptable. If people are not paid the legal wage the company owner can be jailed. That should be the law in American, a liveable minimum wage for all workers without exception.
@@Mr.Patrick_Hung Yeah, but the companies in America aren't owned by the state mafia.
Idk which is worst just, y'know, different.
I live in France and with the exception of independent contractors, all employees are protected by labor laws and minimal wage limits. Tipping is quite rare in Europe except in very touristy places. Not sure about delivery workers though, I suspect they're independent. Price of food on delivery apps is way higher than in the restaurant, so I suspect that's how delivery workers get paid. @@alalalala57
I do food delivery in Sweden for a huge delivery conglomerate that doesn't operate in the US, and it is a bit different here. First, we're actually employed by the company. We're entitled to sick pay, insured, and we get holiday allowance, but our schedule is little less flexible. We can still work as much as we want, but there are shifts to choose from and we're expected to work a minimum of 10 hours per week.
There is no option for customers to tip through the app, and basically no one in Sweden carries cash. I get 0 tips. Instead, I get a wage that can easily accommodate my student lifestyle.
US needs laws.
That's downright socialist!
I don't really care, but in your magical land where we just pass a law to make gig work illegal door dash would just shutdown overnight. Delivery would have to cost 50$ for a sandwich and side if that passed. They're already not profitable cutting all these corners now. In what universe would making them take on 10x the overhead make any sense? Food delivery is a terrible idea to base an entire company around. This isn't new information. It will never be profitable unless you at least double the cost.
@@seanjenkins5505 The magical land of Sweden? Jeebus, it's insane how many Americans think "That will never work in America!" When it works in so many other countries! I'm an American expat and it is mind boggling how brainwashed and ignorant the average American is
@@seanjenkins5505 this is not a magical land, it's Sweden. Full of problems and issues, but where they decided that a bit of welfare wouldn't kill anyone or any business. And it didn't.
In EU in general delivery managers ("apps") tried (and stil try) to come closer to the american model but they can't.
So, we are in a much better state (as always).
The CEO’s “Start an orphanage” as a side hustle line is quite possibly the funniest line on this show ever 💀💀💀
If it's funny now, wait until you see the first tech bro talk about it with Jim Kramer as they prepare for their IPO.

But then I took a price hike to the knee
As a gig worker for all of these companies, I can you tell you, 100% of this is true to a t. Thank you John Oliver for speaking up about this matter 🤝
It's sad it's like that in USA. Here the app businesses would get sued a few times. Then if they continue lose license to do businesses
Are people actually paying $240 for a delivery backpack?
12:44 The fact that some people can't access food because they need a car in order to get food is an indictment on the way our cities are designed in America. Forcing the elderly to operate heavy machinery at literal break neck speeds through our public spaces, is horrifying. Many disabled people, poor people, old people, young people, cannot drive. There needs to be many more dense walkable cities in America like there used to be. Building with the assumption that everybody can just drive everywhere for every little reason is amazingly stupid and wasteful.
As a senior citizen who can't afford a car, I have to rely on the bus, Zip Car, or Uber to go shopping or Amazon if I am ordering something heavy. I am lucky enough to live in a city where all this is available. Rural and suburban folks aren't so lucky.
Yes, and it’s also a NWO way to make it difficult to walk anywhere…we all know that even a short walk is good for humans in so many ways.
Exactly this. Also, some of us would love to but can't afford a generous tip on a small delivery. Sometimes, these are splurges made possible by a promo coupon that makes an otherwise unaffordable meal within budget. Assuming that every consumer has other options AND the financial leisure to pay more on top of inflated costs is really tone-deaf. Yes, always pay a tip! But my god, the message that Even poor consumers should foot the bill of inflation and corporate greed is insane.
"Amazingly stupid and wasteful" seems to be the preference in the US 😢
I love how Muricans are so against of command economies meanwhile they do have a lot of it at home.
Thing is, in the ‘40 the central planning was done in the people’s intrests. Eversince it is done for the corporations.
Absolutely enlightening to hear about the severe exploitation that delivery apps perpetuate. These platforms, once seen as the saviors of the food industry, do more harm than good. The numbers are very alarming! Let's start supporting our local restaurants directly mimicking the old school way. It's a small effort from our side but will go a long way in helping small businesses.
Also, support efforts to unionize and only do business with companies who pay living wages.
If a small business owner can't see the idea of paying a living wage - then you shouldn't support that business either!
For those of you unaware, they've been uploading full episodes for countries that don't have access to this show on their respective streaming platform. Idk why this one in particular was uploaded for other countries too but I ain't complainin'

John oliver is always intresting,
And for us here in israel we have doordash and grabhub its just called differently, and its a shit show here aswell because we are built on predatory contract work economy.
Why is it when Corporations are discussed in America, it's always goes with "How is that legal?".
The god they _actually_ worship in that country is Mammon, the god of money. It's a Pay-2-Win country.
because they are holding the country and people hostage.
Driving for DoorDash… they wouldn’t cover any car repairs or wear and tear. When I’d drop off closed food bags that I assumed had everything ordered and I couldn’t open… when someone saw something they were missing, they’d give me one star and blame me for not checking. I couldn’t. I’d ask the restaurant if it was all there and they’d say yes. I’d get hit for it.
I don't know how it works where you live, but here where I live, if you use your own car, bike, bicycle, or similar, you can deduct it on your taxes.
If you're an independent contractor and need a separate car for your business, you pay a lower registration fee as well.
Unfortunately some of the apps are set up in a horrible way, so criticism of what was delivered, ends up falling on the delivery.
I've made it a habit to always contact the company that made the food and packed the order.
It's usually not like they don't make mistakes if I go there to pick up the food myself - and having worked as Pizza Delivery back when it was the Pizza place that hired their own delivery, I know that of course mistakes happen.
The reality is corporations are set up to put the worker vs the customer, instead of them uniting to fight the company. As long as you continue to blame the customer, the corporation wins.
@@Dayvit78 You are correct, but you also misread the original comment. They *were* blaming the company. They were *not* blaming the customer.

As a Dane, I want to remind John Oliver, our police is much different than the American police, hence why Lego, a Danish company, that is still headquartered just a few hours from where I am right now, may have an issue with the United States of America, where cop violence is rampant, using their image
The cops in Denmark, are not allowed to draw their guns, unless it’s a very hostile situation, and we have very rarely a situation where lethal force is being used.
So yes while Lego is pro-cop, they’re pro-peaceful cop. Denmark as a country and therefore also a lot of the culture is based on the police meant to protect the people, all the people.

Stop promoting tipping. Tipping is for BETTER THAN AVERAGE SERVICE. Thats the definition. Promote Eurpoe model where companies dont feel fine pushing their operational costs onto consumers.
The delivery companies are artificially pushing down the price to make the offer seem more attractive to customers. Driving our delivery across town has a price - it costs gas, time and vehicle wear and tear. When we don't tip, we pretend the cost is zero. Nobody owes us to bring our food over for free.

Being a delivery driver made all the difference when I was between jobs, wanted to save for trips, and also make money while on a trip where I could just turn on the app and also see a bunch of an unfamiliar city. Also, now that I live in LA, we get a guaranteed hourly wage around $20 and the Dash branded city bikes with an enclosed basket are only $1.75 to rent. I have never ever used a food delivery app. Maybe I just dont eat fast food enough, but the thought of getting semi-cold fast food for twice what it costs just turns me off to the whole thing.
Same
We were very heavy users of delivery during the pandemic, but we have completely stopped. The cost was just too high and the mistakes being made by both restaurants and drivers increased significantly. I've had missing items, wrong preparation and delivery of someone else's order. Where I live, there are no bike deliveries, it is all in cars, and I could see in the app that the drivers were making multiple pickups (with waits at each pickup) and multiple deliveries. Having food sit in their car for 45+ minutes is unacceptable.

Doordash driver here, i do it in a large college based city and a lot of the kids are rude as shit, unappreciative and don't even tip. I don't know if everyone thinks we make bank from doordash themselves or what, but i don't make shit without tips and isn't even worth doing without them. And now they've changed stuff and made qualifying for high paying orders sooooo much harder and haven't actually increased the benefits any. Before it was just 150 orders done a month, 4.7*+ rating and 70% acceptance rating. Now it's 100 orders per *WEEK* 95% completion rating, 80% acceptance rating and 4.7*+ customer rating. And no one is made to tip and if you get under 95% completion rating they can just nuke your account out of existence. I was making $250-$300 a day just a couple of months ago, but since they made these new changes I'm lucky to make half of that and it pretty much just destroyed my job that i actually enjoyed having.
sorry to hear this
$300 a day is a lot of money, and you're complaining you didn't get enough tips from students? 😅
@@Erlewyn I'd bet after gas, insurance, maintenance, wear and tear it's not exactly gangbusters.
@Erlewyn not sure if you read it all clearly. That was before the updates where they've restricted everything and made it much harder to make that kind of money anymore. I'm not making that kind of money for months now and just to get back to making a decent amount, not even more than what I was making before, I have to go through all of this extra bullshit. Catering orders, which were how I made that kind of money, were not going to the students, those were going to actual adults who weren't living off mommy and daddy. Like I said they're now requiring 100 orders a week for one of the requirements up from 150 a month for it, just to keep making the same amount I was before with no extra benefits. And yeah exactly like the other guy said, that really isn't that much with the wear and tear on *MY* vehicle. My complaint was never with the way things were just a couple of months ago, it's the changes they've made to make the job now suck. I still dealt with some orders that didn't have tips or only tipped me 50 fucking cents and it wasn't a huge deal because that's not where most of my money came from anyways it was catering orders and I actually enjoyed my job, now *ALL* I get are those orders and I don't get any catering orders at all.
Never tip. I agree to buy a product for an agreed price. You should be paid by your employer. Don't push the blame on me. If you don't like your job change it. It's not me forcing you to do this.
stop "tip shaming". It's not the job of the costumer to pay workers salary. My country has very minimal tip culture, service workers are payed hourly, regardless of how many costumer they had, and via paycheck so owners can't avoid providing basic rights like pension or health care. Waitress here know they will be payed when they show up for work not only if no one tips them - but also if no one shows up to the restaurant.

Shoutout to whoever uploaded working captions with the episode im not sure was supposed to be uploaded

I am surprised no mention was made of "tip-baiting" - making an order giving a generous tip in hopes of preferential treatment in delivery, and then after it's delivered cutting the tip severely (some cases to no tip at all).
I had no idea they could take the tip back. That’s sleazy.
Actually knew everything about the delivery apps which is why I have never used it at all. Truly hope the rest of the population were smart enough to know the harms those apps have done.
