  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) has become a familiar term to millions of parents, children, students and teachers in recent decades. But how much do we truly understand about the ways it affects an individual? What is it like to live with the condition? To go through a typical school day? Toby shares personal insights about a world most of us have only heard about.
Toby is a high school student with Czech and British roots. He has been intensely involved in rowing and acting for several years, and continues to pursue the dramatic arts both in and out of school. He discovered he has ADHD only two years before this talk.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Ravi Verma Nailed it! At least with my experiences with adhd... Important assignment, now past due, what do you do? look into many partially related things till it it evolves to nothing related at all. I never ever, have less than 10 tabs open at a time on my laptop. at work, by the end of a 12 hr shift, I will at least have 5 open... Then, when you finally feel able to give that assignment your full attention, you continue to work on it and then your eyes (well mine) get very heavy and brain gets foggy, and feels like it went from adequate to high speed (80-90/95 miles per hour) to the speed of a turtle, in the matter of seconds. If your in a boat like mine, that assignment now has at least 50% docked due to being 5 days late, and all you have to show for those 5 days in a moderately decent rough draft; and you surely have used up all of your instructors understanding... Sorry, I just needed to rant for a minute.

Brittney Ricks there's nothing to sorry about , i can totally relate to it , yesterday i started searching for some algo for my math assignment , and after 10 mins i ended up with reading history of calculus , its like your brain is on overdrive , no want to stop on one thing , filling forms online is like most difficult task for me , it gets really difficult to stay on one page and focus on feeling right information.

ADHD: Make a list. Lose the list. Look for list. Lose phone while looking for list. Make new list from memory of first list. Add "find phone" to new list. Lose new list. Find phone. Remember that first list was in car. Check car. Find first list. Lock keys in car. Freak out about having to make phonecall to locksmith to get keys out of car. Realise that there was no need to fear phone call because phone was locked in car along with keys.

Adhd is basically not knowing where to start or what to do next, let alone how to do it, then forgetting how to do or start it after someone already explained it to you, then you leave the activity mainly because you've already given up from all of the other past experiences, never returning until it's too late. Did I mention this repeats for every activity?

I’d get a second opinion, it doesn’t sound like you have ADHD. ADHD affects working memory, so you should remember how to do things. Working memory is one of the issues so you’re having some ADHD symptoms, but everyone has ADHD symptoms every once in a while. ADHD is diagnosed when those symptoms are so frequent and exaggerated that it becomes debilitating.

Close, but not quite. Although many of those with ADD/ADHD may show different symptoms than each other, the basic overall symptom that they all have is executive function. Knowing what, or how, but can not do it, or at least, it's very difficult to do it. Some may indeed forget, others, I think for most, if not all if us, it's it about focus vs distractions. Distractions could be anything from the phone ringing or door knock, someone else walking in the room, to just our very own thoughts... of other things we need to do, and/or going over and over and over what and how to do the thing we need to do, it just gets to be so much thinking, sometimes we just can't (or it's difficult) to follow and push through to actually physically do the very thing we are thinking about... Imagine a tornado of spinning papers, thousands of papers, each one is a thought... You are in the center. You get a hold of a paper, a thought, ie- pay bills. Now you are about to pay a few bills, and you still have a thousand papers/thoughts whipping around you... all of sudden one of the papers caught your eye as it flashed before you,
'you have not returned your mothers phone call from last week'
So now your are going to pay your bills, then call mom.... then another paper/thought flashes...
You have not done your taxes, it's April 15th and the post office closes in 2 hours'...
and another thought, 'you were going to pick up medicine today, which your child needs'...
and you are struggling to still hold on your first paper, bills to pay... and another paper, one more thought, and another and another, all these different thoughts of what needs to be done, or what you want to do, the paper in hand eventually gets ripped out by the wind, but in your mind you still remember, and now you are also thinking about your mom, taxes, your child, and more....

All these ADHD symptoms are due to an impaired frontal cortex. A sluggish dopamine & norepinephrine system. It is genetic. This causes the adhd brain to act the way it does. Untreated it can easily lead to addiction and a range of negative symptoms if not treated properly. Toby was diagnosed young so I'm not surprised his 'cons' are quite mild. My 'cons' were unemployment and decades of addiction.

Same here, brother. I was diagnosed at 33, by a very observant counselor who was seeing me on a "crisis" appointment because I had it. I was wondering if I needed to go to the hospital...again...to protect myself against myself. I was diagnosed time and time again with depression and anxiety. always on lots of medication with little results. After a year of taking medication, I am halfway through my associate degree in Accounting, and moving out of my moms home (at 35!). There is hope...I almost lost hope and I am so grateful I was given the chance to live my best life.

I often get this feeling that when we talk about ADHD, it gets put off as something that's easy to live with, something that you just need to figure out and when you do it is this amazing gift that makes you so amazingly creative and succesfull, while when they talk about other mental illnesses that really have a lot in common with ADHD, such as bipolar disorder and autism, it does get treated as a rough thing. It frustrates me. For me, ADHD is indeed something that sits deeply in my personality, but it's definetly not something that helps me in life. It frustrates me, that just because there are many people who have it, ADHD gets treated as something that you should not see as an illness. I have ADHD and for me, it IS a terrible mental illness that has ruined my life more than a couple of times, and I'm just 19 years old! I know that without ADHD I would be able to get a degree, to do what I want to do in life. I have all these amazing original ideas that most ADHD people have but because of my ADHD I can't finish anything, I can't put these thoughts into real work! And it's terrible!
I was treated for ADHD. I had a psychologist and half the time I had no idea wtf I was doing there.... and my medication did more harm than good. At some point my psychiatrist told me he had nothing else that he could do for me.
So no, it's not easy for me. I dropped out of university because of my ADHD. My relationship of 2 years ended because of my ADHD. I left the house because of all the fights I had with my parents about my ADHD. It frustrates me so much, that this is treated as something common and easy to handle, while for me it's an every day battle against myself!

    • @davyd28
      @davyd28 Před 6 lety +36

I feel for you. Untreated ADHD can be terrible to live with and you may be one of the few adhd-ers who don't benefit from treatments. But it's more likely that your psychologist / psychiatrist don't know squat about what you need. Dump them and find a better specialist, browse the many add online resources for help. Like you, I also have brilliant ideas every day that never become reality, but at least I don't hate myself for that any more like I used to. That counts for something, actually, for a lot, so keep exploring treatment options and don't give up! You're part of our tribe and we need you!

I am so happy that he mentioned the quiet type, ADD, that gets called lazy. Just to put it out there if parents are watching this for their kids; this calm quiet daydreaming maybe easy to tears type is common in girls but not exclusively of course. I get called lazy and here is why. On the outside I am sitting around doing nothing, but in my brain there is a massive universe or factory trying to figure things out, process, problem solve, eager thirst for learning interesting things, philosophy about life and the world (if clouds weigh so many thousands of tons then why can it fly is an example of something I was pondering once, then I looked it up and learned it.) And lots of other things. Sometimes I am doing nothing to try to unstress the stress and anxiety from the overload of information, and sometimes I do nothing because of my physical inability to make decisions easily or quickly so I can't decide what to do or which order, or I want to go do something really bad but can't get started so I get anxiety about never getting my body to move. There have been many times where I have cried in thirst because I couldn't get my body to get up and get water; it can be that extreme. I'm not lazy, I'm occupied.
Now, that being said, in return from all the thinking, processing and learning from looking up random stuff I am now known as "the human dictionary" and my brain and senses are my strength. So if you are here reading this for your child my hottest tip is that visual learning is commonly easier than verbal. Show what you mean, draw it, find pictures or videos explaining. Give breaks in the homework, our attention can be amazing but only in short bursts and how short varies. Have the child answer questions while jumping on one leg if the child struggles to stand still and make it a game. If you can make it interesting enough and really cool did you know's then it is more likely to stick the first time. Likely, not guaranteed. And you might know a habit of maybe watching the same movie a million times, don't sigh or complain, the guilt from rolling eyes is awful when you are a child.

I have severe ADHD. If I drive, I will be focused on driving along with a hundred thoughts that I forget to take the turn towards my home.. I drive straight past my house which I have lived for all my life. I always miss the stop in metro and go forth and back. And theses are just one of the things I go through all My life. But there is one more side to the coin. I was always first in my class and passed B. Tech in Mechanical Engineering with distintion from a very reputed university even though I don't right notes. I don't even know the portion of my exam till the last night, but manage to completely study a subject in one night from other people's notes. On the night before my exam, my hyper concentration becomes a blessing. But I can never listen in the class or if I listen, then I cannot complete my notes..
My handwriting varies from page to page and is never consistent.
I have two patents for my designs of a robot and an aerator.
I can only listen to one person at a time and cannot consentrate on a group of people.
Since my mind is engaged in thaughts, I will hear people asking me things, which I store in to my mind and will answer them after my thought process ends, which result in me giving an answer after few minutes..
I forget all things which is relevant for day to day life like my key, wallet, area where car is parked, place where my shoe was left.. Etc but retains all the information which I have interest on such as world affairs, history, science etc...

Everyone has regrets through life. The fact that you have ADHD just means you probably dwell on them more and feel frustrated things may have been different. 'Dont cry over spilt milk' and 'see the silver lining' spring to mind. It's good that you have a better understanding of your own phycology now and yes of course we all live and learn.. but you can't change the past and you don't need to. Just accept that things have happened and we can only improve our present and future.

The memory/attention aspect of ADD alone is like instead of losing your train of thought, you have to piece together a train in a specific order from a rail yard of derailed cars, many of which are to other engineer’s trains.
Feeling emotions more strongly also really doesn’t help when you have a mind that’s incessantly ruminating over things and find yourself thinking over the problems of the world and the greed and hypocrisy of mankind in disgust most of your days.

Medication helps me to have the determination to not give up, however, I still have to work 4 times more to have enough results, it's exhausting and I am embarrassed all the time to share how hard I worked to do something that other people can without killing themselves. Anyway, there is no other option than just trying more times, it's suks.

Toby hasn’t had it easy over the last few years and we are so proud as his parents for sharing his experience. We really hope that people take the time to understand others with similar diagnoses because honestly it isn’t easy to live with. It’s not about us but about those who live with this on a daily basis. There is a lot of judgment and misunderstanding and truly we should be accepting of all!!

As ADHD I think I have a vivid visual understanding of things. I am not good at reading. But I developed skills overtime for reading. Again, I am not able to prioritize the information. My mind blanks when I try to recall. Just one reminder from someone and it clicks. Only the image that I created in my head while reading is recallable.

I don't know if it is just me but whenever someone comes up to me and asks if I have adhd and I tell them I do and its diagnosed I get really upset when they casually say "Oh yea I probably have adhd as well, I am always tapping my foot so I def have it" or something of the sort. These people don't understand how hard it is for me to socialize and make friends and to focus and keep my headspace. It makes very simple pieces of life extremely hard and frustrating for me. This video is very informative and I am glad someone is finally education people on what adhd actually is.

Sometimes when there is a lot of different sounds I sometimes don't understand anything or remember any of it. I just blank out everything because my brain throws away a lot more than it should. I can't deal with ticking clocks very well. I twirl my hair a lot (used to bite my nails until they bled). I can't sleep without earplugs, a fan, and a cloth against my eyes. I used to take medication which made me almost normal but now I can't afford it. Now the thought of finishing a book is a mere memory.

Our son, the youngest of four of my husbands children, he’s in the process of being diagnosed. I’ve known for some time that something was different, special and amazing about him. I also knew and now know that the way that he is in the things that drive us crazy and others around him are not his fault. I am so thankful for you and other people who have put this information out there to help parents like myself to be a better parent to give my son the best chance of success in life. I wish you the best that life can offer And again I am truly grateful for your message.

I have OCD and it is commonly comorbid with things like ADHD especially if the ADHD was left untreated.
I was diagnosed OCD at 18 and ADHD at 25, and while I think the way he lumped it as a part of adhd is wrong, its not an uncommon comorbidity.
Its not hyper focus for me. I do things in 16s and constantly have to double check taps are off by twisting them off even though the water isnt running (I have broken 2 faucets before I found a way too do it 'lightly' but also satisfy the compulsion)
I can see your point, and I agree with how he stated it that it didnt seem 100% correct.

A big one is magnesium, and I also take a general multivitamin. For those who also have ocd type symptoms, vitamin d is a common player it seems in that (from the research I've done to give my brains a rest from focusing on boring things)

Suffering is entirely subjective and only the individual can say if they feel suffering in any given moment.
