55 Gallon Drum Collapse

- When the air inside a 55 gallon steel drum is pumped out, we see the weight of the atmosphere push inward with 101 kPa of pressure.
The top and bottom of the drum has a radius of about 30 centimeters, and it is about 1 meter tall. This means the atmosphere pushes down on the top of the drum with about 6,500 pounds of force! We leave the calculation of the force on the sides as an exercise to the student.
We pump on the drum with a Varian SD-200 vacuum pump. Usually the initial collapse will occur after a minute or two. The drum seen here actually underwent initial collapse after 35 seconds of pumping; the footage was edited to make it more watchable.

So that’s what the Titan sub experienced…crazy. And that’s just with normal atmospheric pressure, how much faster, stronger and more violent would the implosion be under the millions of pounds of force acting on the total surface’s area of the submarine?
Neat, now put just enough liquid air in it for it to reinflate when you put the cap on and let it warm up.
I would love to see that as well.
If there is no atmospheric pressure, what would happen
I think we need more energy to pull out the air from drum than atmospheric pressure...
could you use a vacuum pump and pull the air out of the barrel to say 25 inches of mercury without it collapsing?
It's always incredible to me how our human bodies (or any organisms) are resisting this much atmospheric pressure all the time, and that we don't just simply collapse.
Luckily the insides of our bodies are not at vacuum, so the same pressure that's pushing inward is also pushing outward.
I work at a CNC shop, sometimes we use a 55 gal drum vacuum to suck up fluids or coolant, im always nervous of the drum exploding lol. Could it? We use the Exair Drum Vac High Lift Reversible
I was hoping you made a vacuum airship
I always thought these was 45 Gal.
😯🧐
Pov your watching this cause your chemistry teacher made you.😅😂😛
И вот за это "учёные" получают деньги...
Earth
weak drum, can't even take the 1 atm on his own.
101 kPa of pressure. ?????
How many pounds ?????
What lbs started the collapse,?
What lbs ended the collapse ?
Implode you mean!
🙏👍🙏❤️🙏🤪🤫
Even the plastic hose did not collapse. Hmm then, make me a device with that plastic :))))))
