Fantastic Vent Installed Wrong?!

  • In the shake down test drive cross nation tour, the 2019 Allegro Red re-build starte leaking in New Orleans.
The low profilte Fantastic vents have screw holes through the vent lid hinge to secure the front flange. Often, installers use the wrong screw and this causes a leak as the screw is not able to seal correctly and is sticking out.
After checking it out, and ensuring it was not MY fault I gather supplies and waited for a sunny day to fix it.

Unless I'm missing something, the hex heads you replaced don't need to go in AFTER the hood is on. They were likely not run down because the factory puts the vent in as a single unit to save time but used the wrong screws to do it that way like you pointed out. After you pulled the hood off the fan, why couldn't you have sealed the hex head holes and channels you filled with silicone, replaced the original hex screws, THEN replaced the cover with its' screws. Saves the trouble of finding replacement screws and addition to you likely huge parts bin. Love these videos.

Hey, many thanks for this awesome video. I just installed a used Fantastic fan in our class A. Thought I did a bang up job of the installation but alas rainy day today produced a wet bathroom ! The problem, your 3 screws that I had not replaced and were not sealed properly!! Couldn't believe you pinpointed the problem I was having! Dug out the lap sealant (didn't know it does not seal!😮 btw) and there they were, wet and loose providing the water an outlet to the bathroom. Many thanks, your experience is amazing and the fact that you are willing to share it with us all is even more so!! Thank you!!

First, so glad I found this video. Second, my 2015 Phaeton had the exact same installation. It appears someone tried to repair a prior leak on my kitchen vent with Dicor, which peeled right off. I always used Dicor on my Newmar so that just carried over to the Tiffin. Now I have have to admit I used Dicor for my new antenna installation, which peeled right off where it was laid over the original Tiffin silicone. The Dicor I put on the fiberglass roof where silicone had never been used appears to be sound. It was only used as an adhesive for stabilizing the legs of the antenna. Now I am well stocked in the correct sealant. So I not only disassembled my vent lid, changed the screws and resealed with the correct sealant, I also fixed my prior blunder on the antenna. Thanks again.

Just think how much better RV’s would be but that old saying I made up over fifty years ago - RV’s are designed to have issues before the leave the factories. RV’s start leaking from the first time water is introduced to them even at the water test the factories do before leaving them. Thank You

Fun fact. Square headed screws are called Robertson screws here in Canada and are all you see in carpentry here. Much superior to Phillip's screws. However they were invented by a Canadian guy named robertson 100 years ago. I guess because they were Canadian, someone decided it would be unamerican to use them in usa. So they are only now getting some use in usa. Even though engineers and tool reviewers have known forever that they have far superior gripping qualities than Phillip's screws.

Just watched this, thanks for the great tips, really enjoy your videos. An interesting point about that Campground you were in, my wife and I bought a Class A back in 2009 and the first big trip we took from Canada was to Tennessee. We spent two nights in a campground not far from that Camping World. I needed a few things and we went one morning to CW to do a little shopping. When we arrived we noticed all these RVs sitting in their parking lot looking a little strange. One Class A I looked at had water on the inside of the open windows? It turns out the river that runs past that campground flooded the night before and all these people woke up with 4 or 5 feet of water swirling around their RVs....There were a lot of units drying out, Class A's, C's, fifth wheels etc. Quite the horror show, I can't imagine just how much damage was done. It taught me to always be careful of where we were booking into....

James, was that a filon or fiberglass roof? Is that why they use silicone? Would be ok to install the 3 mounting screws first(the ones that wouldn't go all the way down), seal them and then reinstall the lid and the screws that hold the piano hinge down last? First trip after I completely replaced the roof on our 39' Newmar DSDP it rained, hard, and we had a leak in the shower/tub skylight. Duck tape sticks pretty good in the rain if you can hold an umbrella in the crook of your neck. I enjoy ALL of your videos. Thanks for posting.
