Climbing a Coconut Tree With No Tools

  • This is how to climb a coconut tree with absolutely no tools. You can help but wonder if this most impressive skill is one that might not stand the test of time.
Felix works on the beach near the Grand Paradise Samana, Dominican Republic. If you're there, he'll be happy to collect one for you - tips are greatly appreciated.
How to climb a coconut tree with Felix Perez.
Since my arrival in the Dominican, I was obsessed with getting a fresh coconut. I was my goal to track down one that was edible. After an early experience, I figured out that only the ones still hanging were any good to eat.
Maybe my obsession was born in the fact that coconut is essentially a meal. It contains 283 calories per cup 27 grams of fat, 12 grams of carbohydrates and 5 grams of sugar. What more could you ask for in a survival food.
Tempting as they are as a food item, they are quite inaccessible to the normal guy as the edible variety hang 30 feet up.
As I learned, dropped coconuts are often spoiled, rancid, decomposing, or too small due to being early aborted.
But the palm trees were everywhere, surely I would be able to track at least one down. The evidence was everywhere. They were truly ubiquitous.
The front desk of the resort I was staying said to look for a man working the beach by the name of Felix. But by my 5th day, I still hadn't crossed paths with the man.
Early one morning, I can across a man who was climbing using a harness. But I was disappointed to find out that it was just a guy doing maintenance, and not collecting coconuts.
Enter Felix Perez, who lives in Samana, Dominican Republic
He lives in the city neighbouring The Grand Paradise Samana resort, but you'll see him most of the day working on the beach at the resort where he collects coconuts for the tourists.
Near as I could tell, he is paid through tips alone so if you ever visit the resort be sure to let him know that you saw him on my channel and tip generously. He told me that he has to split the tips he gets with the resort so keep that in mind.
Felix is deaf, with only a little bit of hearing. He explained to me that he was deaf since birth. He communicates by making signs and with a bit of effort you can carry on a good conversation.
Unlike most palm tree climbers, Felix does not use any tools at all. He climbs with just his bare hands and feet.
If you're up for it, Felix will put you up for shore lunch of fresh caught snapper and deep fried plantain. That's a bit of a spoiler for the following week! Stay tuned!

Coconuts are great food and drink. Lots of calories, minerals, salt etc.. Though they can give you the bends if you drink more then 2-3 palm trees its core can be eaten too as young shoots and its flowers. Plantain and palm trees are enough to sustain you and provide you with building materials. In the middle if thejungle, they are the most common food. Coastal theres lots of almond too those are wild an quite toxic. You can catch fish at night with a machette in rivers and lakes by holding a flashlight above the water which atracts them. Kill off some minions to atract bigger fish too. Lots of insects but you wont see them much though. Worms if you dig in rotten trees which taste like coconut. Big bumps on trees are termites, edible and smearing a handfull over your skin will make mosquitos move so far away from you that you wont see them for ages :)

The Wooded Beardsman how in the world could a normal human harvest coconuts in a self reliance/survival situation? Even with a rope between the feet I don’t know that many would have the courage to climb a 30 foot tree trunk.

I can climb I am used to it. Lots of practice. No tools. Anyway the ones up there are tastier if green usually, you ate incorrect about fallen coconuts because those are the sweet ripe fatty oily ones that they use for oil. Dont eat too much of the fiber or you be shutting nonstop. I learned from experience.
If you get one that is already sprouted and rooting you'll find delicious sponge inside and its even more nutritious. A sapling is great for eating the palm heart, it's also delicious and good for you.

Ok, I can feel you , but in general on normal treas with no branches it is good training especally for wresteling and other marshal arts . The gardener was yousing a technick I would cal Monkey, I klime like a bear, it is easier and you are more hooked on the tree with your body, but It is so hard and you scratch you selve up a lot . I think that is ok. I once had a problem with the monkey technick, I dislokated the joint of my right arm by putting to much weight on the elbow, I will never forget this pain. I could fix that on the spot but since that time I like the bear technick more.
Kliming might seem to be abloloutly useles, BUT for hunting Chaga or for escaping dogs that want to fix you, it is actually very use full, remember europeans can not wear guns if we go outside. Wehn I was in the Tom Brown survival shool I had one intruktor that could klime beartechnik up side down, so I think kliming is part of the skil set a hunter and colektor should praktice on , for the fun of it.
So thee are just thoughts I had on that film ( witch I really liked), and I am looking forward to see more of your outdoor akiveties.
