    I used to be a commercial grower. It would help if you take off the leaves below the first truss of flowers. That where most of the eggs are. That will to bring down the population. Keep doing the spray regime. Take off the older leaves as the plant grow. It will also help to produce bigger fruits.

    Also remember to spray the soil around the plants as well. The fly eggs can fall from the leaf to the soil below where they hatch. The larvae feed on soil material until they develop into adult flies.

    I love the idea of using petroleum jelly. I bought yellow sticky traps once and found that not only do you catch the bugs, but I had a sparrow with his wing stuck on these traps. They are way to dangerous to have in a garden. There is absolutely to 'give' to this sticky stuff. Banned from my garden ever since. (By the way - managed ever so gently to remove the bird's wing. Hope he made it after all...)

    I have to deal with them annually, I find that a strong spray with the hose to the underside of the leaves, early in the morning, a few times a week, usually takes care of 90% of the problem without using any chemicals. Those eggs on the back of the leaf can really stick though, give em good blast.

    I walked past my decorative kale plant and hit the leaves and saw a massive bunch of white flies. Came in and saw this site and got my spray bottom, sprayed both side of the leaves and couldn't believe here it is two days later and saw a couple of flies. I will respray them. But I can't beleive the difference. Thanks

    Oregano or peppermint will also repel white flies.
    You can put some in a blender with water, put it in a spray bottle and spray or just plant in pots and put near by.

    I would get ladybug larvae/nymphs instead of ladybugs. My kids and I gathered a bunch of nymphys (they called them alligators) and put them at the base of an aphic infected little tree and they crawled up the tree and devoured all the aphids in one night. Then they turned into ladybugs and did a second round of work in the garden.

    We ordered plastic squares already pasted in glue to catch the flies.
    You have a hole in a corner and a piece of garden wire to fix it in place, just peel of the guard sheets and there you go.
    Also if you plant your tomatoes at waist hight it's easy to spray underneath.

      @trinhzphotography350 Před 4 lety +2

      Whitefly Parasite: Encarsia formosa
      Encarsia formosa is a tiny (0.6mm) wasp that attacks only whiteflies. Adult female Encarsia kill whitefly scales in two ways: by puncturing and feeding on scales, or laying their eggs in scales (each female may produce 30-500 eggs during her lifespan). Encarsia eggs hatch into tiny larvae, which cause the whitefly pupae to turn black as the young wasps mature. At 70°F, a new adult wasp emerges about 21 days after the egg is laid. The parasites are shipped inside the blackened whitefly scales which are attached to cards in batches of 50-100 per card.

When I plant tomatoes, I put a clove of garlic next to each plant and it eliminates the Red Spider Mite. Onions, Shallots and Celery in the "Tomato Bed" will keep a large portion of pests away from the Tomato's. This year so far, has been Horrible for Insects, but the Tomato's are looking GREAT!

    2 tbs canola oil and a few drops of dawn in a gallon of water works on White flies and spider mites and other soft bodies. This can be used often, every 5 days until they’re gone. If I don’t want to use water, the lady bugs are great. Thinning the bottom of plants and keep them off the dirt makes it harder for the bugs. I thin out all the bottom third of my tomatoes and thin the center. More air, less bugs. Neem oil works but smells harsh and isn’t cheap. Canola oil is cheap. I like to spray top and bottom of the entire plant and also the surrounding ground. But sometimes you have to mix it up, try one and next time another. They say you can add neem oil to the watering and it will treat from the inside. Systemically. I have used alcohol in the past but by the time I killed the mites I also killed the plant. Good luck.

    Put tobacco in a stocking and soak it in hot water until the water is nice and dark.That, with dish soap and Listerine into a hose end sprayer.

    It takes time and patience, but we use black electrical tape. Leaf by leaf, and you can get them all off.

    I'm not sure if those are orange marigolds that you have planted by your tomatoes but if it is...they attract white flies. I used orange marigolds last year as a natural bug repellent and had a horrible problem with white flies. Then I read that orange marigolds can attract white flies. I didn't use them this year and I have not seen one yet.

      Right you are. The day after shooting this video, I was sitting out there looking at the garden and that it me. I usually plant them on the outer edges of the beds. Mrs. R decided to help and planted a few among the tomato plants this year. Not that I'm blaming her ;-)

      Are the orange marigolds better then the yellow or should you use both? I didn't realize there was a difference.

    • @Tiki71
      @Tiki71  Před 10 lety +1

      No difference. I just like color variety. Mrs. R will NOT be planting them in the tomato beds in the future though ;-)

    • @railbuilderdhd
      @railbuilderdhd Před 10 lety

      Why will you not be planting them in the tomato beds any longer? I thought they are good to have in the garden?

    • @Tiki71
      @Tiki71  Před 10 lety +2

      I'll plant them on the edges and not IN the tomatoes. Planted IN the tomato beds they can actually attract whiteflies (especially the yellow ones).

    Very glad I saw this. I have a garden for the first time and have not had bug issues as of yet. I have 7 tomatoe plants and some of them are fruiting. My husband reminded me to watch for worms and now I know what needs done if they appear. I had forgotten about white fly too.

    How about a pump up sprayer? And covert your black light mosquito zapper, to have a yellow light. that way at night, the white fly moths, would be zapped to death, and feed the frogs!

    I noticed these damn things last year. They were everywhere. I was like, what are these things? I got rid of the plants they were infesting. They were on my potato plants. I used a spray bottle and sprayed the hell out of the plant. This year I have neem oil, 100%. I am using this. I also saw a video where he recommended using Dr. Bonner's castile soap, it's organic. You use about a tablespoon and fill it up with water/spray bottle. Spray it on the plant. I really hated seeing these little bastards. I am going to use the yellow paper method as well.

      I tired going out every day or so and spraying with watter & smashing. Also put petroleum jelly around base or tree because of aphids. Sadly I lost an apple tree I've had for 3 years. Started it from seed. 😔

    My yard is so badly infested that I don't think I'll get rid of the m completely, but I'm going to try everything you just mentioned. Will the mouthwash dawn soap mixture kill my ladybugs if i buy some. I worry that they will die. Also I have an exterminator that sprays for spiders and crawly things. I worry if that will also kill my ladybugs..

    • @jaynepower2050
      @jaynepower2050 Před 3 lety

      Careful killing spiders & crawly things as many are beneficiall in the garden. I'm also worried that the petroleum & yellow card trap will do the same thing to all the helpful and harmless bugs, not just the white fly
