The Dogwood I planted 6 years ago is about 30 feet tall.Its the white.Stuffed with a solid covering of flowers.The pink is nicer.

You are very welcome, we are delighted to hear you found this video helpful. As you can see, it will take a few years for your plant to settle in, put out its roots and get fully established, but when it does, you are in for a spectacular treat each and every year! Meanwhile, if you haven't already put down some mulch and supplement the watering to "nurse" it through any prolonged dry summer periods. That will help relieve summer drought stress and of course, be careful not to over do it. Too much water can saturate the planting spot and that can be detrimental too.
I’m loving that tree and have been looking for a dark pink dogwood. I may have found the one! I’m in the PNW in Zone 6, hoping the Cornus Scarlet Fire might work.
It should do very well for you. Just remember that it often takes a few years for the dark pink to show up on the flowers.
I planted one a year ago yesterday, March 11, 2022, in a semi-shaded wooded area. I also keep it protected from browsing animals, by enclosing it in a mesh-covered cage, which allows both light and water through to nourish it. I'm excited to see when it will leaf out this year in about a month.
FANTASTIC, you are in for treat😉. But as you've probably noted in our video, it will probably take another year or two for it to settle in and get its roots into the soil, before you will start to see the spectacular performance. Keep us posted, of your progress.
@@OverdevestNurseriesWell, here we are in June 2023, and my Scarlet Fire has failed to leaf out this year, except for a few very near the graft scion on the trunk. However, those have since died back. If did leaf out in 2022 though. The branches are still pliable and the trunk flesh appears whitish underneath the cambium. Is my dogwood still alive?
How did its progress though the summer?

It will get to about 8' in 10 years and as we say on our website, push on up to about 15' or so, and maybe eventually (when myself and several other people) are "pushing up daisies" it might get to about 20'

My scarlet fire dogwood is in my front yard in the full sun, this is its first spring/summer and is only growing leaves towards the bottom, the top looks Barron is it dead on top??😮

It sounds like your plant may be struggling a bit after transplanting. This is always a critical period with a plant trying to adjust to its new home. Which is why we put a lot of effort into growing our trees (in a special way) in containers to form a mass of finely textured root system.

If you know any knowledgeable master gardeners, garden coaches or even someone from your local Extension Service you may want to have them take a look. They will be able to determine if the soil drainage looks OK, if the top part is still alive and likely to re-flush and grow out again, or if it is dead, and the plant needs to be pruned and reshaped to allow it to form a new leader etc.
Meanwhile, give it plenty to TLC, water it regularly (especially during any dry spells) and mulch the planting spot too, if you haven't already done that.
Then if you rewatch our video, you will hear David explain (around the 8.30 minute mark) how trees like this often take a few years to settle in and get established, and in this case, our tree was in its third year after transplanting. So, often its a matter of adjusting to the new site, establishing a root system that reaches out into the surrounding soil and beyond. And then, that's when you will start to see the sort of gorgeous response that our trees are showing in the video.

What are the ages of the trees at the 2 minute mark?
They are only about 3 years old. We estimate that they are approximately 6-7 years old in total (3-4 years in the nursery and 3 years in this garden).

And as you've probably noted in the video, David explains how this variety flowers well as a young specimen, but it often takes a year or two of patience for it to get its root system established, and start to produce its delightful large, deeply colored bracts.

Well spotted....
That's the beautiful upright purple Dawyck European Beech (Fagus sylvatica 'Dawyck Purple'). I remember seeing it for the first time, over 40 years ago, when as an eager young nurseryman I visited the famous Trompenburg Arboretum in Rotterdam, where Mr. J. R. P. van Hoey Smith proudly introduced me to it. it was impressive then and it is (as you've noticed) is equally impressive today in one of our gardens.
Looks like a slow grower like a lot of kousas... I'm Southern Ontario Z5 (so winters similar to Buffalo and Detroit..maybe a touch colder). Will this survive? Also the pink bloomers tend to bloom less than the white Kousas.. Is this an exception? TY
Once it gets established and rooted into its new site it is quite fast growing and flowers profusely. And, as David mentions (at the 8 minute mark), unlike many other C. kousa selections, it flowers well as a young plant, but may take a year or two to start coloring up to produce its big, deeply colored bracts, and once that happens it is truly spectacular.
As you may have noted, our experience is limited to our Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern USA region, where we know it performs well in the warmer parts of Zone 6 & 7 but we are unable to guide you much with your conditions in Canada. It is a relatively new plant that is still undergoing trials in colder areas, so if you decide to try it, please let us all know how you get on.

Absolutely, that's (after all) what we are doing in the nursery...... We grow all our plants (including this selection) in pots.
The key is to put in in (as you've mentioned) a large pot, the more soil volume the better, that means more room for the roots to grow, less fluctuation in soil temperature (cold in winter and hot in summer), and very importantly good drainage.

Yes, it will produce rounded fruits that look a bit like strawberries, they hang from mature trees and can be quite ornamental although it is really (as you can guess) the FANTASTIC FLOWERS that this selection is grown for.

You mention that the scarlet dogwood is hardy to zone 5. Does that mean no higher number zone is best? I’m in Texas, zone 7-8.
The higher the number 5,6,7 & 8 etc. the warmer the winter temperatures it will be in those zones.

My 2-year-old Scarlet Fire has a lot of lower branch growth, so it looks more like a bush than a tree. What advice do you have so that it grows more like a tree?
All it needs is good culture and patience!

The idea is to present healthy well grown specimens that have a well furnished branch structure and already have an established leader, so that they will quickly settle in and be on their way to making glorious small trees (like the ones in the video).
Our motto is to "grow them big enough to make instant impact in the garden but small enough to fit in the truck of a car" Planting smaller, younger ones is fine, but obviously they will need plenty of TLC..... watering during dry periods, mulching, gentle, balanced fertilizing, pruning and training to select a leader and then just time!
