Glad to see your locomotive had wheels in gaug. When i was active in N scale, every atlas locomotive i purchased, the wheels were always out of gauge. Nice to see they redesigned the frame contacts for the power pick up. That's always going to be a problem with the contact pick-up bar. Unless creatively fixed. I also think they could have done a much better the underframe appearance. It looks toyish from the fuel tank back to the rear to include the air space above the rear truck.

nice to see that is does not come with a E24 connector and still looks like it will accept normal decoders.

I used to have a small HO layout when I was a teenager and young adult. I was thinking about getting back into it and since I have limited space was going to go N Scale. I'm dismayed to find that model railroading has become a hobby strictly for affluent adults. No way kids or people with limited income can enjoy the hobby.

Hi Ron , did you try to uncouple from a car ? I got my locomotive with magnetic wheels and Accumate coupler did not work , I had to change with Micro Trains coupler to make that locomotive to work .

@RonsRailReviews Hello there, I was hoping you could answer a question for a newbie. My wife purchased for me the Kato GE ES44AC "Gevo" And Mixed Freight Starter Set in N scale for Christmas and I am enjoying it very much. So much so that I am now looking to get another locomotive with DCC and sound. The Gevo will run own its on track and remain DC. I have the DigiTrax Zephyr in mind for the controller. Could possibly list your top brands for locomotives? I do love the Kato, but they cost a a lot more when purchased with DCC and sound from what I have seen on various sites such as Lombard's and TrainWorld as opposed to other brands. Thank you.

Well obviously DCC and sound is more expensive.

That’s what you’re going to run into when you purchase something from a reputable brand that already has sound. When they release something, they want it to have the best quality. You don’t want to buy something brand new and have tinny sound.
Often times a speaker and good dcc board/chip is going to add $100 to the cost. Maybe more. You can add non-sound decoders to Atlas Master Series Silver locos for not a whole lot with something like a Digitrax decoder.
Ron also has a video about putting a Digitrax decoder with sound into a Kato loco. I can attest that as is, the sound isn’t very great, and the shape of the speaker basically meant that I had to use a drill to mill out part of the metal frame. The wires also need to be neat and tidy because there is NO space in the body for additional wires.
I have a BLI n scale loco with sound that is exactly the way that a purchased it. It did cost a chunk, but it’s been no problem, sounds great, and I don’t have to worry about it.
Check out XL Systems DCC for some cheap (maybe MRC brand?) decoders. I have one that works alright with sound. It isn’t as good at all as the brands that come pre installed, but it’s sound.

@CaptKerryH Scaletrains is the overall best for sound and detail. Atlas and Kato details are about the same but haven't seen a Kato with sound cost less than an Atlas.
