Love this information bro but what really stands out is your outlook on mixing which is a similar Outlook that I have came to after trying so many different techniques you hear producers always preaching about this is the right way to do with this is the wrong way to do it but what I found is make it how you like it good info bro keep it up God bless
I gave up on making beats when I was 20 when I had all my equipment stolen, including vinyls that I was collecting since 12 years old. I’m 42 now I’ve been grinding for the past 2 years, now that my kids are bigger and I have time to myself. I’m trying to pick up where I left off, so thank you for the 💎 you give in your videos! Salute and respect!!
Sad to hear about that, specially the records is hard to replace. 20 was when I started to make beats. Thanks for tuning in 🙏🏼
@@mpchead most definitely! Ty 🙏
Sorry to hear that about your stuff getting stolen, happened to a friend of mine years ago
Will you get an mpc one or are you gonna get an older mpc ?
@@saren6538 Ty!.. I just have a laptop and mpk mini for now..
I was drugged back in 2015 woke up 3 days later with a different set of clothes on and a missing computer with music I made on it.
I felt like I was fighting myself with mixing sampled beats with my mpc. This video just helped me see that there’s nothing wrong with what I’m doing. Thank you !
Yeah man its your sound that you should make music the way you feel it's ask creative minded individuals we are entitled or individuality we like what we like so in turn we do what we feel
dude, you have an mpc one, completely different animal.
Filters are eq
Sometimes it's helpful to have your samples in mono if you're playing over elements. Many times they sound better in stereo. Depends on a bunch of things, including your drums.
@@Allious131 I couldn’t agree more. The pc only (in the box) is a never ending battle. You will always feel like your music is missing something depending on what sound your after.
Amen to that, going into hardware make me throw the rulebook out the window. As long as the machine sings, you're 90% there!
Amen ..
i mix out of the mpc myself!!!! then i record into pro tools for compression for a warm sound!! my process is the same!!! lo fi boom bap 4ever!!!!!
Preach it,a lot of people need to hear this.
This is absolutely the best advice and beat making I have ever got in my entire life. That's the thing now like everyone wants to take away from the sound these filters and over process your sound to make it fit in with what everyone else is doing
There is some importance in having a sonically cohesive and clear mix. In fact it's just as important as the composition itself.
I needed this. I’ve gotten caught up in the hype of “your beats should sound like this”
I like the gritty sound of my mpc and sp. you reminded me that I need to make tunes That I enjoy, and stay true to myself.
Thankyou
Some of the greatest hits made were mixed in unconventional ways and within limitations where they weren't supposed to sound as good as they do. Respect MPC Head as your philosophy on mixing resonates with me.

I really dig it man. The emphasis is on getting it right at the source - choosing the right samples, getting the levels and pan, and using filters as opposed to EQ. It's a simple and musical approach.
Not disagreeing with the talk about compressors controlling peaks, but just thought I would share a fun fact in my random bank of music trivia ;)
Back in the early days of radio broadcasting, the louder a signal got, the hotter the broadcast equipment would get. So with no control over peaking at analog 0, if something like a feedback loop started, it would basically heat everything until tubes and transistors started exploding.
So after a handful of radio stations burned down, the compressor was created to stop feedback loops from starting fires.
But like all things in music, someone decided to use their equipment the wrong way, and because of this, they pioneered modern mixing and mastering.
I also do it all on the mpc ,filters sometimes eq and levels. Slap a compressor on the master and export
I really needed to hear this, mixing has always been a part of the process where I become most critical but I see it’s just another opportunity to add your own flavor and style, thank you!
Finally!! I was waiting for this video for a long time!! Thanks a lot man keep it up :)
marlow.... these tips are insane yet so simple. I'm very excited to use this technique. thank you
just found these videos. they’re teaching me a lot. thanks man :)
Amen. So many over think things. U do it exactly like I do it.
You are a damn genius. I love the way you have already considered the fact the samples have already been mixed.
Yooooo, I can't believe I wasted so much time but with eq plugins etc, but this just made a huge f'n difference for me... man. Yo, I thank you and I thank me for coming back to this video.
I'm shaking my head like damn, this just opened the heck out of my mix without losing any of my instruments integrity and sonics.
Peace and thank you! Damn!
Love this video, I always thought I was going wrong by just mixing within the mpc1000 but filtering panning and levels are really what you need. Thanks for the vid. Excited to hop on my mpc
Very informative. A lot of great old school hip hop sound was created by keeping things simple. I really like the lo-fi vibe of your production.
Great to hear this large up
Couldn’t have been stated more perfectly.
+1 on using reference tracks....it helps so much, no matter what genre
Thank you for this. You articulated this in a way that I really relate to. I just got comfortable enough to start releasing music again after 15 years.
Hey... Dude great tips. As one day a teacher told me, "short and sweet" "no too clean as pop music". I really loved this video. I appreciate your time on it.
Awesome.
Thank you for this video!
As the other comment in here said, this made me realize that im doing nothing wrong, in fact i'm overdoing things and stressing for no reason.
Great video
Nice video, it's very important to hear this from people who know what they are doing!
we need this, us upcoming heads... Thank you
It took me years to come to this conclusion about production... less is always more ... very good video ... respect.
You're so right, I love creating new Beats so much, I wasted so much time trying to mix on my daw that it took my head to export everything track after track when it's finally so easy to do everything via the mpc and I finally save my time and I can concentrate more on the creation
I FEEL THE SAME WAY I BEEN MAKIN BEATS SINCE 94
Thanks I needed to hear this
thanks so mucho for your tutorials, you saved my quarantine.
Thanks Man!! Great advice!...now I'm inspired
Bro you are the best dude out here doing this.
The beat from this video is so dope.
Thanks for da knowledge Marlow. Peace!🔥🔥🔥
This is what I needed to hear right now. I always struggle to find the right sound for my beats but.. there are no rules in lofi. Thanks a lot!
Thank you for you widsom Marlon Lot a love❤️✨
Man this is great
love your take on this, I got really deep into mixing at some point, been learning lately to simplify my process and focus on what matters
I don't think music need to be super clean, just leveling sounds is all it needs sometimes
I just tried adding a Lowpass on my whole drum track shaving some of the higher freq for small lofi mix I'm practicing with. This is exactly what I was looking for and it was right infront of me the entire time. Thank you for sharing this.
Yes
Saw the video 2 times , very good stuff . One
Really nice video. Straight to the point and down to earth. Although I mix in my DAW, over time my methods and techniques have become more simplified.
90% of my mixdown is in sound selection and placement. I focus on this, then levels, panning, basic EQ (HPF/LPF), some compression as required, or for specific texture.
Thanks for sharing amigo! This also perfectly answers a nerdy mixing comment i posted a while back 🙃
Excellent video
Really appreciate this video and it's info. Thank you
I love it! I only recently got into sample based production. For some reason I could never crack the code. Anyways, I've noticed that I the sample based beats I've made so far really don't need any major mixing work done. They are all, like you said, perfectly mixed already. It's pretty awesome. I think most of the mixing work goes into the drums, or maybe a little bit of eq or basic filters to cut certain frequencies out of a sample.
One of the most helpful mixing vids ev! The more mixing devices I've added the worse my mixes sound and more chaotic. My style is a blend of dirty & clean. Now im going to try no eqs on my drum hits (maybe a few if newed) but there is at least one kick I have no eq cuz it looses its beef no matter how I stew it. More ppl need to see this! We need to learn to master the minimal as a foundation to master anything higher. U did it Marlow!!!
Only add eq's and/or any type of effect if I really really need it, that's my view on it.
While sound selection is very important, don’t forget that some of the mixing process is science guys and not really open for debate. There will always be certain sub frequencies you’ll want to cut of any kick drum ect. Having a minimalistic approach is good but will not always take you to the desired end result. Always consider your source when taking in this kind of information also. I guarantee you that a lot of your favorite underground artist still approach mixing their beats with correct formulas. Just my 2 cents. Try to find a balance between both. Bless ups everyone.
Sometimes I have delusions of grandeur when it comes to beat making lol Videos like this knocks me down a few decibels and trust my good ol' ear 👂✌
Sketches of Spain!
The Blue XL is dope. Always wanted one
Fantastic video
As a mixing engineer who started 20 years ago as a beatmaker/producer, I kept telling people that they shouldn't use anything but leveling/panning and basic filtering while producing to get the sound. Distortion/Mangling devices and plugins are different thing, and if someone want to distort their string sample, please do, as a sound design tool...
While I was producing I wasn't using any EQ's, compression etc, only basic leveling, panning and filtering, and occasionally when my production went to other mixing engineers, 90% of the time they didn't want me to send or didn't use my trackouts...
I've been getting questions how did you make the drums hit that way blahblah, sample choice, leveling, filtering, that's it.... You don't really need much when doing any production, especially boom bap....
Exactly. Straight outta the sampler works fine if you mix as you go.
Yup but like he said if you're using vsts and stuff or live instruments that's really when eqs and what not comes into play
@@FonkedUpProductions Of course, what I'm saying is that people try to find "the sound" mangling eq's and compressor's instead of new musical/arrangement ideas... And people who are not very literate with audio gear and mixing, can easily fall into trap/placebo that they need this EQ or that compressor to make dope production...
@@janmagdevski4973 100% agree and the internet isn't helping at all
Sounds like my mixning technique.. just leveling and filtering!
Thank you!
That's how I do it too EXCEPT I ALWAYS boost my bass tremendously but that's my sound and my taste

Good advice
dope video thanks!
Yeah nice lesson
in my case, i used to eq, compress drums but nowadays i am off of it. when on software i recently used to put a saturator on drum bus but lately i choose the right drum sample saturate individually to meet my gritty lo-fi sound character, when the main sample has bass i usally create a double - 1 is Hi Passed one and the other Lo Passed copy so i can use the frequency range independently. On hardware, i sample the drums with hotter signal to saturate the circuitry and sometimes in tweak the sample in software and i record it to hardware.
The Master Bus of my beats is mostly made of a compressor in parallel mode, saturation if the beat is made in sotware, then compressor/limiter in soft clip mode.
Good to hear this. Some times I can be guilty of over complicating simple things. That being said I wonder if you have any tips or know where I could find tips on mixing ones tracks on an mpc with an mc as well?
U can create a bad mix and it sounds good!! :) I love it!! :D
FELT THISSS, I’m good at getting the idea for a track but actually “making” a finished beat isn’t my strong suit. I didn’t know mixing was what I was missing. Great video!
I feel a lot better now lol. My approach to creating music is almost identical to how you do it. The mixing stage has always been something I've always been uncomfortable with. I have sold beats that were recorded to one track straight out of the ASR 10 lol.
Much love man
I like my music to sound dirty too
I kinda got lost in learning the science and engineering it was like taking to much away from the sounds.
I like to hear the gritty and dirtiness of old analog gear
I did learn a lot of tricks and techniques from learning mixing but I rather keep it fun and dirty
Great vid, it’s just goes to show how there is no actual “right” way. I’ve been doing track on my Op1 and Analog Rytm and I hate the idea of exporting everything and mixing in a Daw.
This is gold. For me nothing ever sounds as good as the “in the box” beat. When I track out something gets lost. I stopped doing it
All true... Simplicity is key, correct me if I'm wrong but a filter is a specialized equalizer. Right!? if so that means workflow is faster with a filter as opposed to opening up an eq
I really think this message is so important for beat makers. I have been making beats for a few years now, and I have listened back to some older beats and thought to myself "These sound better, how am I getting worse". Back then I didn't know anything about mixing and often took a much simpler approach. Your points on samples already being pre-mixed turned on a light bulb. I have watched countless mixing tutorials and applied them to my beat making process, only to over-process the track and end up with something that sounds awful and muddy. Compressing drums made me laugh. The fact that the sample always stays the same is such a valid point that I never thought about. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and opinions, I'll definitely be taking the advice on board.
always compress drums you noob lol
@@allieboy181 Yeah I don't know what I was talking about lol. I am a noob tho you're right lol. Still trying to learn each day
@@allieboy181 nope clip drums yes
This is the correct answer. 100%
Word
For the record should be mentioned the 2000xl itself only has lopass filter.
Thanks for the insight,
Im excited to learn more from you
With the fx card there is an option to eq also, but its rather weak compared to the LP filter :(
One more thing the internet has messed up minds when it comes to mixing because mixing is something you do to taste that's why 90s hip hop everyone had their own sound if you want it clean clean it up if you want it dirty keep it dirty it's all what YOU like people don't even know what they like anymore
@@Allious131 yeah that's the thing you gotta do what works for you and what you like how can someone else tell you what you like ya know
Great Video Fella, thank you! I just wonder how you do the panning? Do you always pan your mainsample (re-sampled, or from record)? What about drums? Always Stereo or also Mono ? Questions after questions :D
Thanks and keep up the great content
peace
Nothing “lazy” about this approach. Wisdom and experience, respect ✊🏽
a little bit 👌🏼 of laziness too 😂
@@mpchead fair enough lol. Love the vids man, inspiring.
Is that a Garrard turntable?🏆🏆💙 Forced into learning the importance of filters in my sampling after my hi hats and the samples hi hats decided to lock into battle all over the track
This is perfect Marlow digs
.. Thankz.. One of this days let as know what u do in the daw.. To get your beat mastered.. Peace and thankz again. Regards from Monte Caparica
Nada demais, só um limitador e equalizador no Logic para dar um toque final.
Although you start saying there was nothing special to your mixing process, for me, your talk had a lot of depth and helpful advice. Like for example the preference of filters over EQ... one might think, having a device, "I have to use *all* sound processing options and I miss something, if I don't". You make a strong argument that it's not true. Which kind of creates a huge relief to just trust one's ears instead of working through a checklist to use each and every mixing feature available
But I did go through all that years ago, I had to go through the check list thinking it had to be done. Now I understand that these are just tools to help when they're needed. But I am glad I went through that experience, I now have confidence when I chose my tools for work. And it goes without saying that we are always learning, my tools today won't necessarily be the same in 10 years.
Reverse engineered and shared. Thx big bro
do you recommend the MK1 or MK2 of the Analog Heat? I'm looking it up now and it seems like a great helper in many ways. Thank you for your wisdom! PS: reference tracks truly are helpful when getting started or even just trying to find the right pocket for songs...
Dope thoughts, Marlow! Love it. What DAW is that you are using? Logic?
yes Logic
If you havent watched it already you should watch dubs banger's video on drum layering. Its good on how to get full range kicks and shit.
Yo MPC head - Can you share some of the bands you reffered too that started with a dirtier sound then polished up? It would be cool to hear the shift in their sound, and how far they went to the other side
IT THE WAY THE AKAI MPC SOUND
actually it is a great approach. I like that way. Especially because the new generation of MPC´s has sooo much mixing stuff in it, you dont really need every track to be in a daw.
Yeah I think it's good to know when not to use something.
Wow your technique is close to mine in that not using eq but filters. I occasionally use eq if I'm doing ny compression on drums but as for carving out frequencies I almost always use lp and hi pass filters on my samples. Simplicity is truly key.
Filters do the job most of the time
Some good info there ! What’s the vinyl player you have there looks chunky :)
Also what headphones do you recommend for making beats etc on headphones only as I have the sennheiser hd650 but they are haven’t enough bass
Thanks
An old Garrard turntable
So, how do you use the Analog Heat with your MPC? Just as a FX unit to run your stereo mixdown through it or for single sounds, too?
I'd say this is good advice when beginning, levels and pan is great to master first. However EQs can do a lot a of things for you and could open up new creative opportunities, it would be foolish to ignore it, it's a field where you can grow a lot.
However it's a good thing to make a decision and commit to the basics first.
The video we've all been waiting for. Dope. You mentioned tracking out every sound. If you don't mind how do you sync the sounds so they play just like they did in the MPC? I personally record the audio with no midi sync and let a click track sequence of kicks play before the actual loop of a sound to later line them all up. But I find that the timing is always off as in the MPC doesn't trigger Midi precisely or it gets recorded with too much latency... very frustrating.
I just add a first sequence of clicks before each new track recording. And after line up all the clicks. I don't use midi for that.
@@mpchead Thank you for the reply! I do it the same way as you but when I zoom in all the way on the waveform the click tracks are always off the grid by a couple of ticks which makes it not possible to line them up perfectly. Maybe a audio interface latency problem?
With Mpcx I just drag and drop. I really like that. Because I don't arrange in MPX anymore then bounce to stem. Arranging in X is I just can't.
Yo whats up bro, you said we need good drum samples, where do you get your drum samples? I struggle to find any as good as yours
