That may be the most intense final 250 I've ever seen. Good for the South Africans
Definitely! I'm back here 6 years after the event to see it. Look at their stroke rate kick in from 500m out.
It's a shame they are getting rid of lightweight events, they are always some of the most entertaining with extremely close finishes all the time
Indeed they are. Lightweight is quite strategic and very technique intensive. The heavyweights are basically ogres pulling sticks.
It’s because they want to do more sprints, it shorter, and with even tighter end finishes…
Races in 2028 Olympics will be 1500m too…
I'm a high school rowing coach here in the States. I show them this video every year. So inspirational!
Gonna miss races like these! RIP LM4-
@@dario8982 The Olympic poltiik retards decided that lightweight crews don't have a future in Olympic rowing and they are wanting to reduce the number of events. Lightweight 4 isn't going to be at the 2020 Olympics.
7 years on and I a 17 year old Tasmanian boy, have had the honour of being coached by Anthony Edwards, as well as rowing with him and racing an 8 with him.
Did the commentator confuse Australia with South Africa??
Yip. Complete balls up. For the 2012 Olympics the television people's union in the UK insisted that only BBC employees commentate on sports events for the Olympics. So the guy that was commentating on rowing didn't really have a clue what was going on. Hence why you also didn't hear any relevant technical analysis or terminology from him.
He was awful the whole week. Talking about weight limits during the heavyweight fours, incapable of getting Slovenia/Slovakia right, but this one was the cherry on the top. I think I've heard him doing football commentary since?
this commentator really messed up in that final sprint
he kept saying "australia taking over in lane 5" then when RSA won he finally said "great win for south africa" lmao
RSA absolutely under stroked the other three boats in the last 250. Great use of the straws. Just goes to show the value of a full length stroke over a shorter faster stroke.
What a chop of a commentator!
Go SA!!
At one stage the comentator made a bit of mistake. When South Africa came into 1st place near the end he said Australia. Their kits look very similar so i guess he got a bit "Deurmekaar", that means confused in South Africa.lol Im South African, they made me proud!
Thats insane how they caught up like that near the last 500.
Great race, but somewhat clueless commentary, confusing Australia for South Africa: "Australia are taking over in lane 5! It's the green and gold who are going for gold!" Actually, Australia were in lane 6. Finished 4th, outside the medals.
Absolutely beautiful technique of the AUS RSA GBR.
Australian technique here is beautiful to watch.
@@jackcore6969 well there isnt any issue in acknowledging good rowing, even if it doesnt gain them a medal.
I was there for this race, so crushed when GBR got pipped to the gold, well played by SA though, incredible achievement
Amazing race
Wow South Africa super charge come from behind win. Impressive race
I would definitely agree, but he was spot on when he said that it was "one of the stories of the games!"
Nothing more heartbreaking for Australia. Anthony Edwards actually was in the boat in the Sydney lightweight 4s and got a silver medal, miss out on gold by about a foot.
Talk about being in the mood, watch those final strokes from South Africa.
South Africa (in the Men's Four) have a guy called JOHN SMITH! IT'S THE DOCTOR!
As the real Dr, I take offence. The other guy, he is a pretty decent rower tho.
South Africa was amazing! wooooow!
SA were a boatlength behind Denmark at one stage 😮
I only came here for the Tour de France.
Fcking respect for South Africa!
what a sprint.
Por favor traigan de vuelta al cuatro sin ligero...x el bien del espectaculo
Great
Why is nobody talking about how the South African bow seat almost caught a crab out of excitement after he won?
better than the australian commentary-for every race... "And there's only 3 lengths in it, coming up to the 100m to go mark if they push now they could take the gold!"
The bests in technique are Hoff and Borch ;) haha , BEASTS!! Really I think that the best technique is from Bérrest -Bahain!
You're right, only leading for 1900 metres of the race at the olympics, how shocking.
you could tell denmark wasn't gonna hold on. they were rushed and South Africa's technique was much better
south african at the last 500m had me at the edge of my seat. goddamn that was a nice race!
love this so much but what a chop that commentator is. australia need to change their colours, we must have had green and gold first lol
BBC commentators union wouldn't allow sports people to commentate on BBC at the Olympics
The colours green and gold were adopted in 1984 by Australia and in 1994 by South Africa so Australia actually had them first.
Actually, Australia and South Africa both had green and gold, but on a rugby tour to Australia it was agreed that Australia would use cold with green and South Africa green with gold. It stuck.
Good Race 4-
No they didn't… RSA and DEN stoked the same same… GBR was 1 pip high from 1750. RSA and DEN both rowed 36 strokes in the the 250 mts. GBR rowed 37. Only makes sense that if you row longer, with the same rate you go further them the competition. It's science.
x2 speed
Let's go for it, Team USA 🇺🇸 Rowing! Go, South Africa 🇿🇦 go!
16:00 "south africa looking to beat great britain to third for the bronze" ... haha
sa fais rever
dude. canada was in lane 6.
Hey. Looks like Jade and her sister!
Trading this for the womens' four is a crime against sport.
Confusing Australia for South Africa??? Not following you there.
well, no entirely useless. They still won an Olympic bronze medal, which is more than most rowers can say
If you think this commentary's bad, you should have been there. Absolutely awful! "And they put their oar in at the front and then they take it out at the end of each stroke." - wtf?!
100 years later its a repeat for GB and Danmark! However Germany had taken firs place then. Incredible RSA. well done......although those were coxed and un rigged then......
there's no way that you make it to an olympic final and almost win with bad technique durrr
this commentator made numerous mistakes throughout the events. cant help but think that with GBR's many rowing legends they could have picked someone less clueless to do the commentary..
in rigged
Terrible, terrible commentary
how could these danish guys win??? this was the poorest technique ive seen a long time
They have won this event 3 of 5 olympic games and gotten 3rd the other two times. When no team has a huge advantage when it comes to power in this field it comes down to technique.
please don't look at this Danish double - the technique is terrible...
South Africa was insane at the end, they paced that race so well.
Eyyyy you rowing dude? Cool to see you commenting, I was subbed at like 50k :D
Man you are a legend! I wish i get a reply from you :)
Did not expect you to be here
