It is not as difficult as it seems. Before we record, I practice the song a bunch from start to finish so I can do it without issues. When we track the vocals, I record AT LEAST an entire verse at a time, and I tell the engineers not to tune my vocals, not to over-compress them, not to add any extra layers that will make me sound over-processed, etc. The goal is to keep the vocal tracks as raw and real as possible... because I can mimic that live. I cannot mimic over-processed, perfectly tuned bullshit. Nobody can. Perfection is for machines.

After we record and I get the mix back, I listen to it a ton, memorize the majority of my inflections/delivery, and I practice it even more-usually while moving around a lot to make it more difficult for myself, that way it is EASIER under more relaxed conditions. As I begin to know my vocal parts inside and out, I usually find little things I like to change/tweak, but the goal is to get the live performance as close to the studio version as possible in one take. To me, that is a successful vocalist. It is not about the range, techniques, or passion. It is about being able to mimic the studio version of yourself without lip-syncing, pitch-correcting, or cheating.

I'm essentially doing a cover of myself, and by having everything as raw and authentic as possible without jeopardizing the track/mix, I create an opportunity to only have to compete with myself from the past, and if I am practicing a ton and practicing in difficult conditions, which I am, I should be able to AT LEAST match the studio version each time I perform it, if not topping it entirely.

I have been doing vocals for thirteen years.
People compliment me nonstop, they call me a god, they call me a king, they tell me I'm the best, but I do not see it at all, and I never will. That character-flaw pushes me beyond my limits, and THAT is what I want. I do not care if I lose my voice. I do not care if I can never sing/scream again. I will keep going until there is nothing left, and then I will find something else to do, and nobody can stop me, because at the end of the night, none of this is important to me. Well all die one day, and I want to die knowing I shined so bright, I blew the fuck out.

I don't know if Slipknot from the early days were any inspiration for the sound of this album but I genuinely thought when listening to the album that it brought back the intensity and heaviness of Slipknot's "Slipknot/Self Titled" and "Iowa". Great album guys!
