I was watching half of this with the sound off as my husband was asleep next to me. At first I thought, another pretty video to attract viewers. But no. The reality of all the slow patient hard work that it takes to create a garden. I have done all the paths and paving at mine. More like you than your husband. So lovely to watch. And so honest. Such a breath of fresh air. ❤ to you all.

We also live in a little cottage type house over 100 yrs old. I have had some health issues and with working as a busy professional chef...i didnt have the time to do it all at once. But little by little its getting there. 9 years later im still working on it. But we also added a vegetable garden . Redoing old flower beds and also making a perennial garden w fountain. We have alot in common. Im now retired & need a knee replacement, but still gardening. Thankyou! I loved this video! I also have collected bricks for many years from old houses being torn down.

Some years ago I put in a paved driveway and had many leftover. They really over ordered! My neighbor came by straight away asking about them. I graciously declined. Had a guy move them all into my backyard I managed to use many of the brick shape into the front yard for paths and edging. Still adding more to the back. Getting my money's worth and enjoying every minute!

I love how you appreciated this old garden from the first minute on.:) Many people cannot come to a conclusion like you did and would clean an old garden up by shredding most of the plants and putting "easy-maintaining" gras in it (what*s not true at all that lawns are so easy and cheap to maintain!) We real gardeners know that, don´t we? ;-) A beautiful piece of freedom, silence, etc. - your garden is so beautiful. warmhearted regards from Vienna/Austria.

This is why we have no professional hardscape! Between the expense and at first being unsure whether the garden design layout would work as planned - I just sort of tackled a project whenever I had time Oh I do have a gravel mini patio surrounded by mosaic pavers that were a creative and colorful DIY project many summers ago. There is a circular gravel seating area in the Secret Garden with border stones. In the past two years I managed a few essential walkways (with free pavers from my neighbor) so there is less mud in the house and also because they are painted white and sealed which is perfect for walking in the garden after dark. The latest project this spring was a rather cool looking "hopscotch-layout" pathway covered by three (existing) big arches leading to the old gazebo. My first project was an enclosed Potager, all gravel except for some ornamental mosaic stones to delineate the space and give some color and interest in the winter. The potager has a four square inner paver path surronded by a double row of border stones used for window boxes or pots. Later on I decided to expand and now there is a wide path surrounding the initial veggie/flower/herb garden and I'm using the low outer wall for window boxes and containers with trellises along two and a half sides. Later I splurged on a white Arbor for the entrance - now covered with scented Jasmine and a red passion flower. Like you said - you are delusional if you think all this happens in a year or two. I'm guessing there will be a few more projects, one I'm already planning for the new tropical garden - still percolating ideas for that project. I think it is what true, passionate gardeners do without a second thought because for us it isn't really work:). I can relate on the plant nerd - one can never have too many plants and there is always something new to learn or discover. You guys did an awesome job preserving a wonderful established garden and giving it a new life. Subscribed!

@@stonecottageadventures304 thank you for your reply, gardens are such an ephemeral art form, but the spiritual connection you will undoubtedly experience with those who laid down the foundation of your garden, though mysterious, will no doubt resonate for years to come. Then hopefully will be passed to another who will also appreciate the value of continuation. I have seen too many layered gardens bulldozed or weed wacked to oblivion, it's always heartbreaking. That's why I appreciate your careful moderation and respectful renewal. Best wishes.

New sub here. I know a labor of love when I see one and I adore your creative mixed media walkways and patios! Our story is similar in that our century home needed a complete renovation and the "garden" began as a tiny triangular bed of orange poppies and a square mailbox patch of weeds which turned into a large cottage garden with a curved, brick pathway and gazebo. When the garden became too much for me to care for with chronic pain, we discovered sheet mulching, hydrangeas, and David Austin roses. My current project is adding perennials with a color palette of purple, peach, magenta, and Forget-Me-Not blue. Looking forward to viewing more of your videos!

@@stonecottageadventures304 haha. I've always thought food trees are the best. No one should ever go hungry. I might just go ahead and run for governor. Ours is the worst. Lol. Thank you!

Why didn't you move in for a year? (first time to your channel)

I was living with our son, Daniel. He is a quadriplegic, completely paralyzed from the neck down. He is now incredibly independent - has a job, owns a home, manages his own caregivers, and all the things other adults do. That does not happen overnight! We knew he was close to living on his own when we bought the house ... just not quite. Now we serve as deep back-up and have dinner with him much of the time.
