      The DX7 ii is the best proportioned and best looking synthesizer ever.. Built like a tank without being overweight. Panel layout is not the most efficient one but certainly looks very handsome.

    So beautiful and decadent! I used to do the same thing on a DX-9, because it came out before the DX-7 and was cheaper. It only had 4 Operators but I could twist the f**k out of that thing! I got my presets stored. These are brilliant!!!

    I remember finding this product 35 years ago and having it installed in my DX7II at a music store. It was a truly fascinating product that brought my DX7 back to life like a modern multi-timbral synth. I proudly attached the "E!" sticker that came with the product.

      I am personally on a major analogue synth mission at the moment and have bought far too many recently. However hearing this beauty is making me see how you need a bit of everything for a nice complete sound. I'm now on the lookout for some nice FM. I think I shied away from the DX7 when it came out (besides me being an analog junky) because so many of the factory presets sounded alike and then I'd heard SO MANY new songs w/ the same 2 or 3 DX7 plucked bass sounds. Years later, I picked up a used DX27 and played with it. While I kinda felt it was limited to certain sounds (more so than the DX7 since it was 4-operator instead of 7), I did program one sound I really liked that I called DIGIORGAN and sometimes wish I still had it to play around with again. Thus the need for synth geeks to want to own one of everything! ;-)

    • @retrosound72
      @retrosound72  Před 9 lety +5

      I never hated the DX7 and I really love analog sounds. The biggest problem is the most user use only presets. the soundengine is so versatile and powerful. for me is the DX7 one of the big synths ever.

      Der DX7 polarisiert seit seinem Erscheinen die Synthiwelt. Analog Puristen hassen ihn oft aber ich mag besonders die metallischen, harten Klänge sehr gern. After installation:
      VERY IMPORTANT!!! To properly initialize the E!quipped DX7II:
      First load a ROM Voice Cartridge into E!’s four memory banks (see
      pages 5 & 6 of the User’s manual.) Be sure to load WITH System. [On
      a DX7IIFD, you can also load an ERAM disk after you have loaded at
      least on bank with a cartridge. If there is already SE!quencer data
      stored in the ERAM, there will be no need to continue with the next
      paragraph - but don’t skip the final paragraph.]
      Next, press button 14 until the screen says “Load Program?” Move
      the cursor over to select SE!quencer and press YES (twice.) Once you
      are at the SE!quencer main menu, press button 4 to enter the
      Utilities mode. You want to press button 4 again to enter Global
      Utilities. Press button 1 to erase all SE!quencer memory and then
      press YES (this initializes all SE!quencer memory banks; if this is not
      done, SE!quencer’s RAM will be corrupt!) Press NO repeatedly to
      Exit and return to the DX7II Edit mode (when the LCD says “Are you
      sure?”, answer YES.)
      Finally, select any PERFORMANCE from Internal RAM to clear the
      Edit buffers. And that’s it
      And always make the WRITE PROTECTION OFF

    DX7 II. The sound of the mid to late 80s.
    Based off this great keyboard, many sounds should sound very similar for PC and console gamers of the late 80s to the mid 90s. Yamaha's FM chips can be found on the AdLib/Soundblaster cards (and compatible) as well as in the MegaDrive and many arcade machines.
    Yep, I say this in every DX7 video, but the first 1 minute already is like a drunken MegaDrive/Genesis.
    Digital FM synthesis is in my opinion *the* sound of synthesizer. Sorry Moog'ers out there..

    Sehr schöne Sounds! Ich hätte meinen DX-7 II nicht verkaufen sollen :-(

  • @NicholasBryantBonzaiSequoias

    Delay FX are added on externally? It makes it hard to tell what is E! board and what is FX..

      @retrosound72  Před 9 lety +1

      The E! board has no influence on the DX sound only on the DX functions.

    This is really good. Thanks! What is for you the main difference - and which one do you like best - between the DX7 I and II ?

    • @retrosound72
      @retrosound72  Před 7 lety +2

      the I sounds a bit warmer but the II has layer sounds, dual sounds and a lot more.

      This is really impressive. Is the wheel controlling the FM only ? Also, what delay did you use ? Finally, can you trigger arp/sequences via external controller and MIDI since the E! expansion board is now virtually impossible to find ?

    With the grey e! installed, can you adjust all parameters with the cs slider and hear the change in the sound without lifting the keys? Like what you are doing with the algorithm feedback. Thanks!

    Hi there! Considering purchasing a DX7 IIFD but not sure because I love the sounds here, but I can't find any with a Grey Matter E! expansion... how much is the expansion contributing to the sounds here? Would it be possible to recreate something similar without or no?
    Thank you! ^_^

      The E` board adding some new functions, more patch memory , arpeggiator...
      The sound is the same.

    Can someone tell me if i can put GREY MATTER E in a TX802 or does it even need it? is the TX802 without greymatter just as cabaple as the synth in this video with greymatter. Also i will be controlling it with a ROLAND FANTOM G. Will there be any problems velocity wise? Ive read some only go up to 100 not 127 with velocity but the tx802 was release later so?

    • @retrosound72
      @retrosound72  Před 8 lety +1

      +beakf1 only for Dx7 andf DX7II

    • @looneyburgmusic
      @looneyburgmusic Před 8 lety

      +beakf1 Wouldn't work, like RetroSound said, and you don't really need it anyway... The E! board was really made to correct mistakes/limitations in the DX-7 design...
