    You, Marion are "one of a kind" - the very best kind! Is anything too much bother for you? These shoes are just beautiful and will work with absolutely everything imaginable. Cobblers from yore will be turning over in their graves with envy. I have so often made shoes in my mind but always came to a halt over the pure engineering and design challenges. Rock on, Marion.

    Marion, you are amazing!!!!! Last week I watched a video of a elderly woman in Japan making those traditional flip flops from grass and thought, what if I knew how to make a pair of shoes, that I could pad deeply with wadding for my poor feet, and now you have given me a way to practice and figure out how to meet the constant pain of walking, from past surgery on both feet. Bless you a thousand times!!!

    Interesting that you call that a Russian join, I don't use it in knitting because I don't like knots in my work but I do use it in crochet. I learnt it from my Dad while fishing, he called it a magic knot. I also use it when making cloth twine baskets. ❤️

    • @marionsworld24
      @marionsworld24  Před 3 měsíci

      I think I've always known it as the Russian join..🤔 I don't use it when I'm knitting either.. I usually spit splice. But it's better than weaving in ends if you've knit with acrylic or cotton.
      You've got me wondering if my Dad used it in fishing too... My Mam used to tie the beautiful fishing flies. Goodness knows what happened to her supplies. I can't remember seeing them when we had to clear her workroom out..

    • @k3n.clothtales
      @k3n.clothtales Před 3 měsíci

    I was like, "YES!!!" I've wanted to make my own shoes but have never done it.
    I have watched some Korean historical dramas and seen a sandal made with a fiber similar to your garden string. Also I came across espadrille kits with soles made in a similar way. Likely the climate, economic conditions, and lack of better materials were the main drivers for using twined plant fibers.
    Still, as you expressed, it's so satisfying to make yourself.
    Love them, and all you do here taking time to share. I can't wait to see your videos.

      I really enjoyed the whole process. I have to confess that I had a couple of attempts when making the first shoe. I didn't get it right the first time. I was trying to twist the string together, then I was couching it around. Then I realised I needed the thick felt, and at last my head pinged the crochet idea and that, as they say, was that!😂

    Marion! Stunning, you are so clever and inspiring!
    Last year I was in Seville, and did an espadrilles workshop. My big take away was that 'espadrille' is the grass that was plaited to make the soles. Your crochet string absolutely replicates that! They also taught a fabulous measurement method based on the length of arms and hands and parts of hands in relationship to your feet. Like you say just keep trying on.
    But... now I am home in NZ, and it's winter, my beautiful espadrilles are unwearable in the wet. Thanks for the solution! Op shop soles! 😁

      @@marionsworld24 Yes! Your right. I remember when I was expecting my first baby I started knitting left handed, I made a mistake and asked mum to help me fix it, mum said “ I can’t help you because the knitting is back to front” I went home pulled it out and started knitting right handed. 😅 It’s amazing how the brain works when you are determined to get things done
