- COCKINGTON DEVON | Cockington is a picture-perfect village nestled amidst rolling hills and a beautiful country park, just a stone's throw from the bustling seaside resort of Torquay in Devon, England. It's a delightful place that oozes quintessential English charm, with thatched cottages lining narrow lanes, a historic manor house, a cricket ground, and even a quaint 11th-century church.
Cockington is a testament to a bygone era. The village is remarkably well-preserved, with many of its cottages dating back to the 16th century. One such structure, the Old Forge, even finds mention in the Domesday Book, a historical record commissioned by William the Conqueror in 1086. As you wander through the village's narrow lanes, you can't help but be transported back in time.
The centerpiece of the village is Cockington Court, a grand manor house with roots that stretch back to medieval times. The court has undergone several alterations and extensions over the centuries, but it retains its old-world charm. Today, the court houses a craft center and studios, showcasing the works of talented local artisans. You can browse through a variety of handcrafted items, from pottery and jewelry to paintings and sculptures, a delightful way to support the local creative community.
Surrounding the village is the sprawling 450-acre Cockington Country Park, a haven for nature lovers. The park offers a delightful mix of landscapes, from picturesque well-ordered gardens to open parkland, rural countryside, and substantial woodlands. Three pretty ornamental lakes add to the beauty of the park. Explore the park's many trails, some leisurely and suitable for families, others more challenging for experienced hikers. Have a picnic on the expansive lawns, or rent a bike and enjoy a leisurely ride through the countryside. Keen equestrians can even go for a horse ride through the scenic trails.
If you're looking for some outdoor fun, Cockington Country Park has plenty to offer beyond just hiking and cycling. Play a game of tennis or croquet on the well-maintained courts, a quintessentially English pastime. The park is also a popular spot for birdwatching, with a variety of feathered friends calling the park home. Keep an eye out for woodpeckers, owls, and maybe even a glimpse of a buzzard soaring overhead.
Cockington is a great destination for families. The wide-open spaces of the country park provide ample room for children to run around and burn off energy. There's also a playground in the village, as well as a number of family-friendly cafes and restaurants with menus that cater to even the pickiest eaters. In addition, the village often hosts special events throughout the year, such as craft fairs and farmers' markets, which are a great way to experience the local culture and find unique souvenirs.
Cockington offers a good selection of cafes, restaurants, and pubs catering to all tastes and budgets. For a quintessential English experience, be sure to try a traditional cream tea, a delightful treat featuring scones, clotted cream, and jam. Several cafes and restaurants in the village offer this local specialty, often served in charming settings overlooking the park or the village square. Sample fresh, locally-sourced seafood at a harborside restaurant, or enjoy a hearty pub lunch with a pint of Devon ale. No matter your preference, you're sure to find something to tantalize your taste buds in Cockington.
Whether you're seeking a relaxing escape into a timeless English village, a fun-filled day outdoors exploring the vast country park, or a chance to indulge in some delicious local fare, Cockington has something to offer everyone.

Went there back in the late seventies. I think at the time no cars were allowed in the village, I remember parking on the top road and going down the lane in a horse drawn carriage.
